Work Text:

Shouta looked at the calendar. "One more week," he called to himself. "Damn it, and I still have no idea." He bit his lip and cursed inwardly. In seven days, he and Hizashi would have their fourth anniversary. The blond surprised Shouta every year with incredibly personal and romantic things. They had known each other for many years and Hizashi was never at a loss for something fancy.

And him? He was neither creative nor particularly imaginative when it came to gifts. Knocking out a villain in battle with trickery, guile and elegance; no problem. But finding a suitable gift for his boyfriend; a nearly impossible task.

Shouta sighed and shuffled into the living room, where he dropped onto the sofa. For minutes he stared at the ceiling, when suddenly a jolt went through him. Hizashi loved everything that had to do with music. It was his great passion and his enormous collection of CDs, LPs, digital music and books about music and musicians as well as the fact that he could play several instruments, proved that.
"I'll write him a song," it came to Shouta's lips and without really realizing it himself, he had gotten up and walked to his studyroom. He fetched a pad and pen from the drawer and sat down at his desk. He was glowing inside and more excited than he had been in a long time. "I'm going to start writing a text," he gushed frantically. "I'll just write down how I feel and what he means to me." But then he faltered in mid-motion. He wasn't good with words. Especially not ones about his own feelings. And now he was going to put something exactly like that on paper? Suddenly his head went blank and the pen slipped from his hand. "How can I....?" Shouta groaned, angry with himself. He buried his face in his hands and let out a silent cry of despair. When he looked back at the desk, the framed picture of him and Hizashi caught his eye. The blond had given it to him for his last birthday. The crimson frame showed the two men shortly after their graduation. They weren't a couple then, but Hizashi had said he was sure of his feelings for Shouta even then. And he himself? At the time he would never have admitted it, but he knew much earlier that he had fallen in love with his blond and loud classmate.
The black-haired man reached for the picture and slid his fingers over Hizashi's face. "Then I saw you and I knew...." In shock, Shouta almost dropped the picture from his hand. There they were; the words. He put the picture back and reached for the pen again. Suddenly it seemed quite easy for him to find the right words.
"I don't say a word, but still, you take my breath and steal the things I know. There you go, saving me from out of the cold."
Shouta was delirious and the words were literally bubbling out of him.
"They say that we're out of control and some say we're sinners, but don't let them ruin our beautiful rhythms. 'Cause when you unfold me and tell me you love me and look in my eyes. You are perfection, my only direction."

Shouta put down the pen and sank back in the chair. He had lost all sense of time, but he had done it. He had put his feelings into words and written them down. He smiled with satisfaction, but then he remembered what the next step would be: writing a melody. With notes. He couldn't play an instrument and never really tried to sing and he couldn't really read notes either. "I guess this wasn't such a good idea after all." The euphoria of a moment ago had faded and Shouta felt infinitely tired. "There's no point in going on now. Maybe not at all," he said to himself and got up to lie down and rest.

When he opened his eyes again, he heard noises. He startled, but quickly realized that it was only Hiazshi, who was probably preparing dinner in the kitchen. Only now did Shouta notice that a blanket had been placed over him. He smiled in love as the blond stepped out of the kitchen and called out to him cheerfully, "Well, slept enough Kitten? I hope you're hungry." The self-satisfied grin and the blond's amusedly shining green eyes, made Shouta snort contemptuously and he retorted harshly, "He who works a lot, must also rest once in a while." Hizashi accepted this counter with a smile and indicated to Shouta with a hand gesture that he could come to the kitchen to eat.
During the meal the blond told about his day, which Shouta mostly just commented with a nod of his head. But he choked up when Hizashi mentioned that he was in his studyroom looking for something and had found a note on Shouta's desk. The black-haired coughed and slapped his chest a few times before breathing freely again. "You ....what?" he asked Hizashi, who looked at him in wonder.
"I saw the note on your table."
"Did you read it?"
"Uhh, yes. You know how curious I can be."
"Ahhhhhhh, you've got to be kidding me."
Shouta was angry. Mostly at himself. He should have put the note away. In the drawers or something. Now all the surprise was gone. But when he looked to his boyfriend, he gave him a tender smile. "You wanted to write a song for our anniversary, didn't you?" he asked directly. "Is it that obvious?" Shouta was surprised that the blond had immediately drawn the right conclusions.
"I read through your text and it's really good. I've never heard or read anything so emotional from you before." Hizashi poked sheepishly at his food and Shouta knew there was more to come, so he kept silent and waited. "What do you think about ….," the blond began. "If we finish it together?" Shouta was surprised, but the gentle look Hizashi gave him made him smile. Unlike Shouta, Hizashi was very musical. For him, writing a melody would be no problem. And if they did it together, they would still have a good time together in the process. "That's a good idea, Zashi. And on our anniversary, you could play the song." Hizashi reached for Shouta's hand, which he gladly returned and when their hands touched the blond said softly: "We'll play it together."
