Work Text:
You wake, blinking in the dark and wonder what could have woken you until you hear the car alarm outside blaring and then a moment later going quiet. Someone must have set it off by accident whilst trying to take a trip at… what time was it anyway?
Glancing at the soft, red glow of your bedside clock you realise it’s four AM. Sighing, you roll over to go back to sleep and your outstretched hand brushes something warm in the bed next to you and you smile. Of course, he stayed over for the night.
To anyone else that might not seem like a big deal but it was for him. Even though you’d been together a number of months now, this was still only the third time he’d agreed to sleep at your house. Likewise, you weren’t permitted to sleep at his house very often. It wasn’t because the relationship had any issues, quite the opposite in fact, highlighted by the fact that he would stay at all.
Although he was very protective, Heero wasn’t very trusting. He had his reasons; he’d been one of the soldiers during the war and you knew from his age that he must have been young when this happened. He trusted the other boys he’d worked with during that time and very few other people. It had taken you years to convince him you were trustworthy enough to even attempt to date but it had been worth it. Although you didn’t know a lot about his time during the war you could see in his face and actions it had taken a huge toll on him.
Reaching up further, you brushed your fingers through his dark, brown hair and smiled. As messy as it usually was, it was also soft to the touch. He shifted and you waited a moment, you didn’t want to wake him but you also didn’t want to startle him, he was extremely strong, stronger than a normal person should be and you didn’t want him to lash out in panic because he often had awful nightmares and woke to sit up for the rest of the night, unable to sleep again.
He settled and you ran your hand down his toned chest and stomach. His skin was flawless, which you found odd because he often told you of all the injuries and broken bones he’d had whilst fighting as a soldier, but he had no scars or other outward signs of damage. He was from the L1 colony too, which meant he was Japanese descent, but he had deep, blue eyes, just another thing that was strange about him.
He tensed and you cautiously rubbed his side until he settled back into sleep again. It was amazing really, how much he trusted you given what he’d been through. You stroked his leg, which tensed under your touch and then pulled back your hand. If you went too much further he would wake up, it was actually surprising the alarm hadn’t woken him too, he was the lightest sleeper you had ever known.
You glanced back up to picture those blue eyes looking at you and were shocked when they were. He was watching you calmly, his gaze steady but not judging.
You looked down guiltily for a second, “I’m sorry I woke you.”
“You didn’t,” he replied, he never had a lot to say, “the car alarm did.”
You drew your brows together in confusion, “you pretended to still be asleep?”
“Not really, I just didn’t open my eyes, you assumed,” he reasoned.
He wasn’t wrong but he must have known you’d assume that, “you should have told me.”
“You seemed to be enjoying yourself,” he replied and you had to smile at that.
As much as he seemed to care sometimes and as cold as other people thought he was, you knew he was kind really. He would do small things like that and never make a big deal out of them but it was different than he acted with other people, it was just for you.
“Can you get back to sleep?” you questioned, sometimes once he was awake, he wouldn’t be able to.
He nodded lightly, “it wasn’t a nightmare.”
He didn’t say anything more, just rolled to face you and stretched his arm out over your waist. You rolled with your back to him so you could cuddle back against him and closed our eyes. It was a good feeling to know this most antisocial of men was yours to keep and that thought made you smile as you slipped back to sleep, warm and safe.
