Work Text:
Ranboo had this quirk about him. Well he has this quirk. Information never quite sticks in his brain. It’s like a fluid, you can take it in but you don’t have much choice or control over where it goes or where it ends up or even if it stays in you.
Information is important really, things like your name and your age, your friends and your family. And after all that, the things you learn in school too. So why would he find himself knees deep in a chemistry course? You wouldn’t reckon he’d know. Though he knew and he’d always know he had his roommate there for him. Always. Something he knew, a piece of knowledge that never faltered. Or maybe it had? He wouldn’t know.
At present time… or maybe the future, or maybe no where at all… he found himself in distress. Going through every memory retention technique he could think of. Chemistry was full of laws and mechanisms that weren’t too handy to forget. His grown out nails picked against the small chips of his desk. A nervous habit.
Tubbo, an art major had the final exam period relatively easy. He was good with his hands and motor skills, and knew how to word things beautifully. Two ends of courses but him and Ranboo were a match like no other. Tubbo knew Ranboo like no one else, probably more than Ranboo himself. They fit together like one hand in another.
“Hey boss man,” He leaned on the back of the taller boy “you having a hard time there?” Tubbo was very well able to pick up the small things.
“It keeps disappearing, I can’t think” Ranboo uttered in misery and a feeling of looming failure. Yeah he was holed into his head.
Wandering over to the calmingly painted record player, Tubbo flipped the machine to life resuming what he’d been listening to before, the name wasn’t worth remembering but it was upbeat and joyful.
“Try this you lanky person you, no more sitting” He yanked Ranboo out of his seat and to his feet. “Moving is good for you, and your brain too!”
“Tubbo,., Cmon this isn’t helpful-“ Ranboo felt a pair of arms hook around his neck, noticeably a book too.
“Move with me, Cmon” Tubbo started moving with the music, Ranboo finding a rhythm with him.
“Laws of gases big man, how many are there, go” Tubbo grooved
From somewhere in his brain “five” Ranboo announced appropriately but with disbelief, had he even gone through this?
“Don’t stop there, what are they?” Tubbo prodded looking through the notes in the awkward positing there were in, in his hands.
“Uh, uh” His eyes darted around the room searching for anything. Fiddling with the fabric of Tubbos sweater around the elders waist.
“Right here, Cmon Just look at me, I know you got it somewhere in ya!” He laughs softly yet not in a provoking way. Ranboo turned his gaze to the shorter boy, his mismatched eyes meeting the others soft blue green ones.
“I know you’ve almost got it! Oh oh it’s in the top of your tongue Cmon!” He coaxed
“Boyle's Law, Charle's Law, Gay-Lussac's Law, Avogadro's Law…” Ranboo pieced together
“Let‘s go!!” Tubbo cheered “What else you got in ya, whaddya gotta know”
With a nervous chuckle Tubbo got an answer “theres a lot more to chemistry than just that you dumb art major”
“It’s fine I’ll dance till tomorrow morning if it’s what it takes! Oh and I’ll obviously maybe switch to Spotify… it’d be a little inconvenient to have to restart the record play-“ he was cut of with a laugh sounding from the taller, pulling his mask down to let in enough air.
Something that happened purely behind closed doors. Scars reaching from under his eyes down to where his Adam’s apple would rest. Chemical accidents, prior to studying. Childhood trauma that left marks Tubbo could help but adore, something that made Ranboo himself in the end.
Tubbo laughed along with him. Danced along with him. And In the end was exhausted and fell asleep with him
