Work Text:
Seungmin is softly humming along to a song that is playing on the radio as he drives over the quiet road. Hyunjin is half asleep next to him, dozing off even though Seungmin had asked him to help with the route.
“We’ve done this before, Minnie. And we checked the route three times on the map in case we forgot,” was what Hyunjin answered. “If you want me to help, we’ll have to leave later. You know that I am useless if I’m tired.”
Seungmin knows that, but Seungmin just wants everything to go right. Moving can be stressful, he knows that from when he moved to the dorms during college, but this is on a whole other level than moving to a dorm. This is all unknown territory for Seungmin— it’s unknown territory for the both of them. They’re doing this together, and however scary it is, Seungmin is glad that he has Hyunjin with him.
“You’re frowning again, Minnie,” Hyunjin comments, startling Seungmin a little and chuckling. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to startle you.”
“It’s okay,” Seungmin waves off, keeping his eyes trained on the road. He hadn’t even noticed Hyunjin waking up, and not only because he was focused on driving.
“What were you thinking about?” Hyunjin asks gently, but Seungmin thinks that he probably already knows.
Seungmin sighs. “Just… just that this is all new for us, you know? We’re not only moving to an unknown town, an unknown apartment, but…”
“But we’re also entering unknown territory in our relationship,” Hyunjin completes, and Seungmin hums in confirmation. Hyunjin’s hand finds Seungmin’s thigh and pats it comfortingly. “Yeah. It’s scary, it’s
new
. We didn’t plan on moving in together after three years of dating, but here we are. I get that it’s scary, I am still nervous too, but we thoroughly talked about this decision and, honestly, I wouldn’t want things any other way.”
Seungmin smiles, the nerves that had settled in his stomach easing, knowing that Hyunjin is right. “Me too. I think I would’ve succumbed to stress if you weren’t here for me.” He chuckles and briefly takes one hand off the steering wheel to squeeze Hyunjin’s hand on his thigh.
“And god knows how many things would’ve gone wrong for me if you weren’t here,” Hyunjin snickers and leans over to peck Seungmin’s cheek, making Seungmin laugh too. “But I would be well-rested,” he teases.
Seungmin barks out a laugh and softly pushes at his boyfriend. “I’ll be focusing on the road, now.”
Hyunjin laughs and shakes Seungmin’s leg before he relaxes in his seat again, softly singing along to whichever song is playing on the radio, and Seungmin feels content and comfortable. It’s these kinds of small moments that make Seungmin confident in their decision to move in together, because there’s so much beauty in Hyunjin’s little habits, and Seungmin loves witnessing them.
“Ugh, I’m exhausted. And hungry,” Hyunjin whines after he screws in the last screw of their new bed and he flops down on the ground. “Can we take a break, Minnie?”
“Hm?” Seungmin cards a hand through his hair as he looks at Hyunjin from where he is unpacking boxes with their stuff. “Yeah, sure.” Seungmin sounds tired too, judging from his breathy voice and from how his forehead is slightly sweaty, and Hyunjin feels kind of bad for him, because he knows how many responsibilities Seungmin takes upon himself in order to make sure that everything goes right.
They sit down together on the two chairs they brought— their couch will be delivered later— and Seungmin takes out the lunch that Hyunjin made for them last night before he hands it to Hyunjin.
“The bed is finally finished,” Hyunjin sighs and lays his head on Seungmin’s shoulder before he starts eating. “So we can at least sleep tonight— if we aren’t kept awake by worries like we have been the last couple of nights.”
Seungmin chuckles bitterly and leans his head on Hyunjin’s, remembering them texting or calling until the early mornings, discussing their decision to move in together, their worries, the things that they’re excited for, and so on. “Yeah… but it’ll get better. Nothing has gone wrong yet, so that’s already a few worries gone.”
“True,” Hyunjin mutters after swallowing a bite of food.
A silence falls where they both just stare into nothingness, taking in their new apartment as they eat their food, clumsily and without a table. This will be my new home, our new home, Hyunjin thinks, and his stomach fills with butterflies of nerves and giddiness thinking about sharing this home with Seungmin.
“Okay, let’s continue unpacking,” Seungmin sighs after a while, and he stands up, making Hyunjin fall down on the chair before he tiredly rolls off. “Maybe we can get that dining table done before dinner.”
Hyunjin nods and yawns, stretching himself out on the floor and opening his eyes to see Seungmin softly smile at him. Hyunjin smiles back, regaining some energy to keep working as Seungmin helps him up.
When Seungmin is done unpacking the last box, he comes to help Hyunjin, who is struggling with putting together the dining table. Hyunjin is frustrated and tired because he keeps messing up and hurting himself while hammering in the nails and trying to figure out what the drawings on the instruction paper mean.
“Ack— gosh damnit—” Hyunjin curses as he hits his hand with the hammer again and drops the hammer with a loud clang . Seungmin flinches and Hyunjin groans loudly, his throat closing up in frustration and fatigue. “I can’t do this, Minnie.”
Seungmin lays down his screwdriver with a compassionate expression and crawls over to Hyunjin to take Hyunjin’s injured hand in his and kiss the sore spot.
“There, better?” his boyfriend asks and gently massages Hyunjin’s hand, and it does actually make him feel a lot better. “Do you want me to take over? Then you can rest, or get the mattresses and bed sheets ready?”
Hyunjin presses his lips together and feels a little guilty again for making Seungmin feel like he has to do everything. Seungmin did most of the work in finding the apartment and arranging the move, and he also did the most research about the part of town where they moved and all the planning. Of course, Hyunjin helped, but still, Seungmin did most of it.
“I’m sorry, Minnie,” Hyunjin whispers, staring at the still unfamiliar wooden floor.
“Hm? Why?” Seungmin asks, and Hyunjin looks up to see Seungmin’s dark circles from up close, he is obviously tired too, but it shows in his behavior way less than for Hyunjin.
“I’m only being difficult and whining about being tired while you do all the work,” Hyunjin explains, slumping forward to place his forehead on Seungmin’s shoulder. “You are tired too, yet you haven’t complained even once, and I know that you are stressed.”
Seungmin pulls Hyunjin closer and wraps him in his arms, rubbing his back. “You’re not difficult, Hyunjin. It’s only understandable that you’re tired, you have the additional stress of starting a new job.”
Hyunjin sighs and nods, basking in Seungmin’s warmth as he tucks his head in the crook of Seungmin’s neck and wraps his arms around his boyfriend too. “Ugh, don’t remind me.”
Seungmin chuckles softly and lifts Hyunjin’s head from his shoulder, cradling his jaw as he makes Hyunjin look at him, at his pretty and slightly lidded eyes from fatigue, his mildly messy hair, and his gentle smile with that ever-persisting mischievous glint that Hyunjin adores so much. Hyunjin thinks Seungmin is beautiful like this, and he is grateful for the opportunity to be able to witness Seungmin in his less perfect states too.
“You’ll do great, Hyunie,” Seungmin assures him. “You are more than qualified for the job, but we’ll take the weekend to rest well and prepare all you want. I’ll help you, okay?”
“Thank you, Minnie. You always know what to say.” Hyunjin sighs and smiles widely, leaning forward to nuzzle his nose against Seungmin’s. “I love you so much, you know that?”
“I know.” Seungmin mirrors Hyunjin’s smile, his cheeks gaining a rosy color. “I love you too.”
It’s not the first time that they’ve said ‘I love you’ to each other, but it still manages to make Hyunjin’s stomach flex and flop like a lovestruck teenager. He closes the remaining gap between them and softly and slowly kisses Seungmin, sighing in relief as he feels his boyfriend’s soft lips move against his own and his boyfriend’s fingers caress his cheeks.
In moments like this Hyunjin is reminded of how well he works together with Seungmin. Seungmin has said before that he likes showing his affection through doing favors for Hyunjin, things like planning their move, cleaning, helping Hyunjin get ready for his job, those kinds of things. Sometimes Hyunjin still worries about Seungmin stressing himself out for him, but now he is reminded again that Seungmin wants to do things like this for him, just like Hyunjin likes spoiling Seungmin with cheesy words, kisses, physical affection, or cooking for him once in a while. Those thoughts make Hyunjin smile and he pulls out of their soft kiss a little, still lingering close, enveloped in his boyfriend’s warmth.
“And you know that I would do the same for you, right?” Hyunjin whispers against Seungmin’s lips. “I would do anything for you.”
Seungmin lets out a breath bordering on a whine, and Hyunjin smiles at how Seungmin still gets a little flustered because of his cheesy comments.
“I know,” Seungmin eventually mutters before he threads his fingers in Hyunjin’s hair and kisses him again.
Kissing Seungmin always de-stresses Hyunjin, but Hyunjin knows that it's the same for Seungmin. It's a moment for both of them to escape from the worries of everyday life and get lost in each other.
Hyunjin tilts his head nips at Seungmin's bottom lip to coax them open and deepen the kiss. Seungmin easily lets Hyunjin's tongue explore his mouth and his fingers twitch in Hyunjin’s hair as Hyunjin's hands find his hips and he pulls his boyfriend flush against him. Their position on the floor isn't optimal, though, so Seungmin bumps against the forgotten dining table that is still lying half-finished on its side.
"Right—" Seungmin gasps out of the kiss, but Hyunjin chases his lips. "Maybe— hmmh— Hyunie—" Seungmin chuckles and weakly pushes Hyunjin back, panting a little. "Maybe we should finish up the dining table unless we want to use boxes as a makeshift table."
Hyunjin shrugs and grins at his boyfriend. "I don't mind eating my dinner on boxes if it means that I get to be in your arms for longer."
Seungmin looks at Hyunjin with a pensive look, he's probably assessing whether Hyunjin is serious (he is) and whether the stress of having to still fix the dining table is worth the reward of snuggling with Hyunjin and resting for the remainder of the day.
“Come on, Minnie. Let’s call it a day, order in, and rest so that we can finish up and continue things tomorrow, with new energy, yeah?” Hyunjin suggests, bringing up a hand to caress Seungmin’s cheek, brushing his thumb over the soft skin. “We deserve a break, don’t you think? You worked hard today, and there's no one but us to decide how much we want to get done in a day.”
Seungmin hums in thought before he sighs and leans into Hyunjin's touch. Hyunjin already knows before Seungmin says anything that this means that he managed to convince his boyfriend.
"You're right, I'm exhausted." Seungmin chuckles softly, relishing in how Hyunjin caresses his hand over his cheek. "Let's get the bed ready together and then continue the rest tomorrow."
"Good plan." Hyunjin pecks Seungmin’s lips and pulls him up, re-energized by their make-out session and the promise of snuggling when they're done with the bed.
He basically falls on top of his boyfriend immediately after they’re done preparing the bed and huddles close, wrapping his limbs around Seungmin. Both of them are too tired to talk, but Hyunjin isn't too tired to think about things. He thinks about how he can finally snuggle with Seungmin properly, no intruding roommates or family members, no too narrow single bed, or even no time or opportunity to snuggle like in college. Now they have the room, the peace, the quiet, and the time to just lie in each other’s arms and exist. Hyunjin looks forward to doing this more often, to come home from his new job and be greeted by Seungmin’s cute face, to cook their dinner and do the dishes together until they can afford a dishwasher, and most of all, just to be with Seungmin more often.
Everyone’s main concern when Seungmin and Hyunjin told them that they’re moving in together was ‘won’t you get sick of each other?’ because they are so different, but Hyunjin thinks because they are different, they will work together well, and Seungmin agreed with him. Because they are different, they supplement each other’s skills, but Hyunjin also knows that they will both put in enough effort to be mindful of each other, that is something that they are similar in. They have discussed this decision thoroughly enough times, so Hyunjin knows that they can do this.
Hyunjin stirs in Seungmin’s hold to look at his boyfriend, and he smiles when he sees that Seungmin has fallen asleep. He was really tired, huh? he thinks fondly as he caresses a hand along Seungmin’s face, brushing a few strands of hair out of his face. He can’t help but place a kiss or two on Seungmin’s cheeks before he lies back down and closes his eyes, letting Seungmin’s warmth lull him to sleep.
“Hyunie?” Hyunjin is awoken by Seungmin’s gentle voice and his shoulder being shaken lightly. “Dinner is here.”
Hyunjin blinks his eyes open and stretches himself out, relishing in the space that he has on their double bed before he latches himself onto Seungmin and lets him carry Hyunjin towards the living room, where Seungmin has already set up their plates and food on a makeshift cardboard box table, and somehow it feels romantic to Hyunjin.
“If I could, I would have lit some candles to complete the romantic dinner feeling,” Seungmin jokes as if he read Hyunjin’s mind.
Hyunjin laughs and pecks his boyfriend’s ear from where he’s back-hugging him. “It really feels a bit romantic in a certain way, though, doesn’t it? It feels cozy, domestic.”
“Whatever you say,” Seungmin teases back before he pulls Hyunjin down to sit at their cardboard table. Hyunjin pouts and Seungmin flashes his mischievous smile. “No, I do see it now that you mention it. I finally understand now why you were so insistent on giving up on finishing the dining table.”
Hyunjin barks out a laugh and feels warm seeing that Seungmin has gained enough energy to fool around a little.
“I just wanted us to have the real new-apartment-experience.” Hyunjin waves his hands around and they chuckle before they indulge in their steaming hot food.
Some sleep and food have done them both good, and they leave their dishes for tomorrow, not feeling like doing the dishes for two plates and some cutlery. They spend the rest of the evening resting as well, watching one of Hyunjin’s favorite dramas on Seungmin’s laptop, cuddled up on the bed, but Hyunjin can’t stop the domestic, warm, and giddy feeling rising up inside of him that is distracting him from paying attention to the drama (he has seen it already anyway).
He looks to the side to see Seungmin already look at him. His boyfriend’s eyes widen and he looks a little caught, judging from his reddening cheeks, but Hyunjin only finds it cute that Seungmin sometimes still gets shy about staring or showing his feelings in any other way.
“Are you even paying attention to the drama?” Hyunjin teases, knowing full well that he himself wasn’t paying attention anymore either.
Seungmin flushes and softly scoffs, dodging the question before he mutters, “Don’t act like you weren’t thinking about me either.”
Naturally, they lean closer and Hyunjin smiles satisfiedly.
"Guilty as charged," he whispers before cupping Seungmin's jaw and closing the remaining gap, kissing Seungmin tenderly.
It's not like they don't normally kiss often, but today is a bit of a special day, so Hyunjin feels like kissing Seungmin even more than usual, just to start their journey of living together off right. It seems like Seungmin feels the same way, judging by the way he tries to pull Hyunjin impossibly closer, hands on Hyunjin’s waist, and the way it feels like Seungmin is pouring all his feelings into the kiss. While their make-out session this afternoon was more soft and languid, now it slowly turns more and more passionate.
Hyunjin climbs on Seungmin's lap to make their position more comfortable before he starts placing open-mouthed kisses along Seungmin's jaw, tangling his fingers in Seungmin's hair and guiding his boyfriend's face to get better access. Seungmin sighs in delight as his hands find their way underneath Hyunjin's shirt. Hyunjin shivers when he feels Seungmin's cold hands on his skin, and Seungmin chuckles softly in recognition before he breathily apologizes. Hyunjin doesn't mind it, he knows that Seungmin's hands will warm up soon enough, and continues kissing, nipping, and licking Seungmin's neck, enjoying every little sound his boyfriend makes.
Hyunjin softly moans when Seungmin kneads his sides, and Hyunjin drags his lips up his boyfriend's neck to nip at his earlobes.
"Shall we test out our new bed?" he whispers, slightly out of breath.
Seungmin shudders, humming in thought, probably distracted by Hyunjin's mouth on his ear. "Uhm— ah— I think… I think I'm a little too tired, both physically and mentally. Sorry, Hyunie."
Hyunjin pulls back and softly smiles seeing his boyfriend all red and his usual neat appearance now messy. "Don't apologize, Minnie." He cards a hand through Seungmin's hair before he pecks his lips. "We have all the time and privacy to do it another time when we both feel more like it, because now that you say it, I might be a little too tired too."
Seungmin chuckles and briefly kisses Hyunjin again, as if he can't get enough of Hyunjin, and maybe he can't, because it sure is true the other way around.
"So you were planning on making me do all the work?" Seungmin teases, murmuring against Hyunjin's lips.
Hyunjin laughs and pushes Seungmin over on the bed, hovering over him for a moment before kissing him again.
"When have I ever done that?" Hyunjin jokes, tone dripping in sarcasm. He knows that Seungmin is the more organized one of them, but in more emotional situations, Hyunjin does like to think that he gives Seungmin equally as much as Seungmin gives him, even though Hyunjin does sometimes like to be spoiled a little, but so does Seungmin. They both take turns taking care of each other, spoiling each other.
Seungmin just snickers as an answer and pulls Hyunjin in for one last kiss before Hyunjin collapses on top of his boyfriend.
"That was a great first day of living together," Hyunjin states with a happy sigh. "I can get used to this."
"Me too," Seungmin agrees, hugging Hyunjin close. He noses Hyunjin's cheek and breathes as if he is hesitating to say something more. "I love you," he whispers against Hyunjin's skin and it makes Hyunjin almost tear up, because, while it's not rare for them to say 'I love you' to each other, it is rare that Seungmin tells Hyunjin two times in a single day, but he guesses that today is special.
"I love you too, Seungmin," Hyunjin answers, turning his head to capture Seungmin's lips with his own. "So so so much."
Seungmin blushes and Hyunjin almost bursts out of happiness, fondness, and warmth. Today is a special day for them. Hyunjin thinks that he'll remember it for a long time, but he also thinks, almost knows that there will follow many more special days, because he thinks that his connection with Seungmin is special. Their love is special because they make it special.
The end.
