Work Text:
It was now almost evening and still no sign of Tokoyami yet. The bird headed man had suggested going to the store to buy some stuff for the house earlier that day. It was now almost evening and still no sign of the bird yet.
Kouda and Shouji were doing their own things while snuggled together on the couch. Kouda was petting and playing with Yuwai while Shouji read a book.
After looking to check the time, he turned to Kouda. “How long did Fumikage say he would be out for?” he asked.
Kouda thought for a moment and shrugged. “I don’t remember…” he replied.
Shouji clicked his tongue before deciding to pull out his phone to call his boyfriend. As he did so, he and Kouda heard the jingling of keys followed by the door opening. Shouji put his phone back in his pocket and got up to help Tokoyami carry whatever he bought in. Kouda followed suit.
Tokoyami came in, with multiple bags which occupied both his hands and the length of his arms; the keys in between two of his fingers. Dark Shadow also helped, carrying some other things as well.
“Whoa…” Kouda said, taking four of the bags from Tokoyami.
“What’s all this?” Shouji questioned.
“Groceries…” Tokoyami replied. “Well, actually, only one third of these items are groceries.”
The silver haired man raised an eyebrow. “And the other two thirds?”
“Just some… room decor,” Tokoyami admitted.
Shouji sighed as he helped Tokoyami out. The bird man looked as if he would fall over with all of the things he was carrying. It didn’t help that Dark Shadow was floating right in front of his face, obscuring his vision.
Once everything settled down, the three began to put the groceries that needed to be stored away.
As he was doing so, Kouda turned over to Tokoyami gesturing to the bag. “What’re the decorations for, again?” he asked. “Is it just like personal stuff like a skull collection for you or is it for the whole house or something?”
The man’s face scrunched as he thought about it. “Eh, a little bit of both I suppose…” he said.
“How so?” Shouji asked.
Tokoyami grinned, which was a rare sight to see. “Weeeell...this month is a very special month for me personally.”
Kouda and Shouji looked at each other, then back at Tokoyami. “So they’re birthday decorations?” Kouda questioned.
“Wha-I no, no,” he chuckled. “I don’t care for my birthday that much! It’s something else far more better than that!” Tokoyami is usually not one for guessing games; at all. But today, he seemed to be in a great mood. It had been a while since either of the two had seen him so giddy.
“So, Halloween then?” Shouji answered.
Tokoyami nodded. It was the first year of them all living together, so this new seasonal happiness was something sudden, but not unexpected as before the move, the two did see a glimpse of this side of him during October. Though, it wasn’t this overdone.
“Yep!” Dark Shadow replied. They swooped over to one of the bags, pulling out some fake cobwebs and a giant tarantula. “This spider here will pop out at ya if you step on it!” they exclaimed. “Not to brag, but it was my genius idea for this.”
Kouda stepped back when he saw it. “O-oh uhm...that’s...nice…” he muttered.
Tokoyami swiped the spider from his quirk’s claws. “No need to worry about it, dear,” he assured. “We’ll put it somewhere where it will not bother you.”
Kouda nodded.
Shouji looked at one of the bags and held a string of pumpkin lights up. “Was all this really necessary?” he asked. He didn’t mean to be demeaning or harsh about it, though it did come across that way, he was just curious is all.
“Well, I thought it would be fun if we all decorated together,” Tokoyami said. “And yes it was necessary!”
“So it’s another indoor date idea of yours then?” Shouji asked.
“I suppose so…” the bird replied. “I do not mind if I do this by myself. though.”
“I’m up for it,” Kouda said. “As long as I don’t have to deal with...that…” he pointed to the spider still in Tokoyami’s hand. The bird promptly put the spider away.
“HEYYY!” Dark Shadow whined. “I WANTED THAT!”
Tokoyami rolled his eyes, turning to the quirk. “Well Kouji does not, so unless you can find a place for it that won’t end up with him getting scared, then we will not use it as decoration,” he replied.
The quirk said nothing coherent, grumbling to themselves with their arms crossed. “...fine…” they muttered.
Tokoyami huffed before looking at the time. He had a few hours before he had to go on patrol, meaning that he and his boyfriends would be able to do the decorations and maybe squeeze dinner in there too.
He clapped his hands together, getting the attention of the other two. “Okay then,” he said. “Where should we start first?” he asked.
“Let’s get the simple stuff outta the way first.” Shouji said. “We can work on the details later.”
Kouda nodded. He wasn’t too knowledgeable on home decor or Halloween decorations, so he took what his boyfriends said at face value when it came to that kind of stuff.
Tokoyami smiled, making his way to the jack-o-lantern lights and planning on hanging them along the edges of the wall in the living room by the ceiling. He made his way to the couch, stepping on the arm rest. “Would one of you hand me the tape please?” he asked.
Kouda, a little worried, made his way to where Tokoyami was, prepared to catch him should anything go wrong. “Are you sure that you’re y’know, okay up there?” he asked. “Like, you’re not gonna get hurt like that, right?”
The bird’s feathers huffed. “I can handle this part on my own, dear. You and Mezou can do the cob webs.” Though, just as he said that, his foot slipped.
Kouda, with quick reflexes, caught his boyfriend promptly, who stared at him for a few moments with an embarrassed grin. “Well aren’t you my night is shining armor, hm?” He tried to change the subject, hoping that fluttering his boyfriend would work and be enough to change the subject. Unfortunately, for him, it did absolutely nothing.
Kouda said nothing, staring at Tokoyami with an unamused look, completely blank faced.
“I’m guessing here that flirting will get me nowhere, yes?” he asked.
Kouda, with the same expression, gave a reply. “Not in this case.”
“And I suppose I should’ve just asked for help instead if I couldn’t reach it then?”
“That would’ve been smart…” the rock head replied.
Shouji moved up to the two, taking the string of pumpkin lights from his smaller boyfriend’s hands. “How about I take care of all of the stuff you can’t reach, hm?” he suggested.
“Thank you,” Tokoyami said, earning a kiss from Shouji. Though he did love having two big and strong boyfriends, he also wished he was just a little bit taller. He wanted to at least be able to reach the top shelf without having to ask one of the other two. Though, as luck would have it, he wasn’t blessed with such height.
He snapped out of his thoughts, still realizing that he was still in Kouda’s arms.He cleared his throat and Kouda turned around. “Though I do adore being held by you, I would appreciate to be set down if you do not mind.”
“O-oh…” his cheeks grew a bit red, turning his head away, embarrassed. He complied, gently setting him down. “I- uhm…” he tried to think of what to say, deciding to find something to change the subject. “S-so about those skulls you have…” he mumbled.
Tokoyami made his way over to the bag, pulling the skulls out. “I propose we put them on the fireplace and one on the coffee table over there,” he suggested, pointing to where he wanted them.
Kouda complied, grabbing a few of the skulls and placing them on the shelves.
Once Shouji got done finishing the lights, he made his way to help with the cobwebs. “Are we just gonna put these in the living room, or should we spread them around?” he asked.
“Wherever you two would like. I am merely giving suggestions,” he said, turning his attention to the gravestones. “Oh, by the way, should we put these in the front yard, backyard, or our room?” he asked. “I believe the carpet could substitute grass and perhaps with that we can-”
“Maybe that’s a bit much, okay hun?” Shouji interrupted. He loved Tokoyami, but there was no way in Hell he’d let him hammer a bunch of gravestones into the floor; he was sure Kouda believed the same.
“No, no,” Dark Shadow said. “Let the man speak.”
“The front yard is better…” Kouda insisted.
“Well, I suppose that will work,” Tokoyami said. He knew that the last one would never be agreed upon by either one of them, but he did love how the two reacted to the suggestion.
“Aw man!” The shadow whined, frowning as they tried to convince the bird to do the other option anyways. However, it was a firm ‘no’ from their owner.
Everyone continued putting as many decorations as they could all over the house, trying to replicate some sort of haunted area, which made Tokoyami giggle in excitement.
“Ooh, you know what we can do,” Tokoyami suggested, looking at a wall.
“What is it?” Kouda asked.
“We could wear a bunch of old fancy clothes and take a photo. Then, we run it through a photo filter and make it look like a haunted painting!” He turned his head back to see the reactions of their boyfriends.
“I’m up for it,” Kouda said. “It sounds like fun...”
“Maybe,” Shouji said. “It’ll be pretty time consuming, but I’m sure we can do it by this month.” The man knew how much this idea meant to Tokoyami and he'd do anything to make his lovers happy.
The bird turned around, giving a fond smile to both of his boyfriends. “Have I ever said how much I love you two?” he asked.
Shouji chuckled a bit. “Mhm,” he said. “And I love you guys too.”
As everything finally returned to a less hectic state, they all decided to crash on the couch, Kouda and Shouji both too tired to do anything else. Tokoyami shared that feeling, but unfortunately, he had a nightshift to do in thirty minutes.
He stared at his phone checking the time. “Well,” he said, stretching. “I have half an hour left to spare with you two. Anything you’d like to do before I go?” he asked.
“Sleep…” Kouda muttered.
“Cuddles too…” Shouji added. He was already clinging onto Kouda for some affection, though Kouda was too tired at the moment. Who knew that decorating the house would take so long?
Tokoyami complied, laying down next to the two on the couch. “Want me to get you two something to eat?” he asked.
“I’m okay…” Kouda said.
“Nah,” Shouji replied. “I’m too tired…”
Tokoyami moved to stroke both of the heads. “Understandable…” He went to play on his phone, asking Dark Shadow to grab him his headphones. He didn’t want to turn on the T.V. and wake his boyfriends up, so his phone was the next best thing.
“Oh and thank you for helping me today,” he said.
Instead of getting a response, he felt the two shift on his lap, and one by one, he watched as the two fell asleep. A small smile appeared on his beak as he admired the two, petting each of their heads.
It was a shame he had to return to work in a bit, but at least he had his boyfriends to come home to in the end.
He really did love October...
