Work Text:
All good things must come to an end.
Atsumu knew that was true when his boss called him in for a meeting and introduced him to his new partner.
---
His job was starting to get boring.
Well, as boring as killing people could be.
Miya Atsumu was bored of slashing knives and pulling triggers. There was no fun to it anymore; his targets were too easy - old businessmen who had wronged his boss and young drug dealers who knew better than to run.
Sometimes, he wished they would try. Just so he could remember what the chase was like.
---
Hinata Shouyou never meant to become an assassin. It just kind of happened , as most things in his life do.
Nonetheless, he does enjoy it. He makes pretty good money and sets his own hours; he picks and chooses his targets and receives his payment in return. He really only needs to make one kill a month to survive (kind of funny how that works). He could spend the rest of his time lounging around his apartment with his cat, but he often picks up additional bounties for the extra cash. It gives him something to do.
Well, it was working, until his boss was murdered.
---
“Go fuck yourself, Miya.”
Atsumu hates his partner. Hinata Shouyou is a petulant, stuck-up child with a concerning love for handguns.
Miya Atsumu got his wish: his job is no longer boring, thanks to his boss’s tendencies to pick up strays like Hinata off the street. He now remembers what the chase is like, as he spends several hours every single day chasing after Hinata.
Speaking of which, the tiny redhead is now running towards the edge of the building with Atsumu’s Glock in hand. The little fucker stole his gun.
Atsumu can’t even remember why Hinata is pissed. To Atsumu, Hinata is always pissed at something, even when he’s perfectly content. He’s like a little fireball, always riled up and always in motion.
Atsumu would be panicked as he watches Hinata throw himself off the roof, but he knows that he’ll just jump to the next building and be back in fifteen minutes when he gets bored again.
Miya Atsumu lights a cigarette, and for the fifth time this week, contemplates the consequences of killing his partner.
He knows he won’t do it.
---
Something about Hinata Shouyou prevents Atsumu from ever getting too angry or annoyed with his partner, but right now, that line is being tested.
“Would you quit following me? Work’s over. Go home.” Atsumu swats half-heartedly at Hinata, who dodges with ease. Atsumu promised to stop by his brother’s shop on the way home tonight, but he was not intending to do so with Hinata. Especially with a Hinata who is still covered in some blood splatter.
The redhead bounds a few feet in front of Atsumu, filled with endless energy. “I’m your partner! It’s my job to follow you.” His bright grin strikes Atsumu square in the chest, and he knows that he would let Hinata follow him to the end of the earth.
“Fine.”
Osamu does a double-take when they walk in together. Atsumu had the foresight to pack an extra shirt, but the blood speckled on Hinata’s face and shirt provides enough information for Osamu.
“New partner?”
Atsumu sighs as he sits at the counter, gesturing for Hinata to take the seat next to him. “Something like that.”
Osamu quickly disappears, telling them that he has work to do, and they are served by one of the waitresses. Atsumu and Hinata converse throughout the quick meal, talking about everything from their next hit to the new seafood place that opened up last week. When the meal is over and Hinata leaves, Osamu makes another appearance.
“He seems good for you.”
Atsumu pauses with his straw halfway to his mouth. “He what? ”
“He seems good for you.” Osamu smiles and pats his twin on the shoulder. “You were working alone for far too long. It’s good to see you with a partner again. Plus,” Osamu leans in close, “I think he has a thing for you.”
---
“ Koutarou!”
Atsumu normally does not address his boss like this, but desperate times call for desperate measures. After his twin’s wonderful observation, Atsumu spent some time watching how Hinata acted around him.
He didn’t learn anything about Hinata’s feelings, but he did learn about his .
“What do you want, ‘Tsumu?”
Said boss is slumped over his desk, half asleep.
“I don’t want Hinata as a partner anymore.”
Bokuto lifts his head and gazes at Atsumu with wide, sleepy eyes. “Why not?”
“He’s infuriating . He’s always so energized, always talking, always going. He’s so annoying and he’s always joking around and I can’t take it anymore. He’s stupid and cute and I hate him.” Atsumu punctuates his point by crossing his arms, staring resolutely at Bokuto.
The man simply laughs. “No.”
“What do you mean, no ?”
“I mean no. Hinata may be infuriating, as you say, but-”
“Only I can say that about him.” Atsumu points a finger at Bokuto. “Don’t insult my partner.”
Bokuto lays his head down on his desk once again.
---
It takes approximately one week after his conversation with Bokuto for Atsumu to act on his newfound feelings.
It was supposed to be an easy hit; a simple target requiring little effort.
They weren’t counting on their target being aware of the hit that was out, and they sure as hell weren’t expecting the target to hire men to protect himself.
Atsumu set up his sniper rifle at the top of the adjacent building, eyeing the target’s office through the scope. Everything was fine; they had a clear shot and Hinata was eating chips and looking through binoculars to give Atsumu the signal.
Hinata’s sharp cry alerted Atsumu to danger, and before he knew it, he was being tackled to the ground and shoved against the concrete wall.
“What the fuck is-”
Hinata pressed a hand to Atsumu’s mouth, effectively shutting him up. “I don’t know, but there are snipers on the other building.”
Atsumu glanced at the rifle, still set up and ready to be fired. “Cover me.”
He didn’t give Hinata any time to argue before he was sliding behind the rifle and aiming. The two visible snipers went down with one shot each, and three taps on Atsumu’s shoulder told him that the target was in the office. Another shot took care of that, and Atsumu adjusted the scope to once again look for more snipers. Before he could fire, Hinata cried out again.
He was clutching his shoulder and biting his tongue, trying not to make any noise. The other sniper was the least of Atsumu’s worries now, and he pushed his hands against Hinata’s wound to try and stop the bleeding. Hinata was turning pale, his breathing becoming more and more shallow. There were no tears streaming down his face, even with all the pain Atsumu knew he was feeling.
After quickly discarding his shirt and wrapping it around the wound, Atsumu called Bokuto for help.
“Are you worried about me, Atsumu?”
Hinata’s eyes were glassy with unshed tears, and Atsumu knows that he probably looked the same. “Are you insane? Of course not. You’re fine.” Atsumu’s words had no substance to them, and both of them knew that.
Atsumu’s remaining dignity disappeared as he watched Hinata’s eyes begin to flutter closed.
“Hey, look at me. You can’t close your eyes.”
“I won’t.” Hinata’s words were soft, much like his half-hearted smile. Atsumu can only watch as Hinata’s eyes start to close again, and he does the only thing he can think of that will surprise Hinata enough to keep them open.
Atsumu kisses him.
His assumption was correct; Hinata’s eyes flew open, the glossiness of tears disappearing.
It was a split second kiss, just a quick press of lips. Before Atsumu knew it, he was pulling away and looking at Hinata again to check on him.
Hinata had a smug smile on his face. “I’ve been waiting for you to do that. Good to know it only takes a gunshot wound to the shoulder to get you to kiss me.”
Then Hinata’s eyes fell closed again as he slipped from consciousness.
---
The little shit made a full recovery, and Atsumu was thankful. There were many more kisses in the weeks that followed. Kisses when Hinata finally woke up after surgery, kisses in the middle of the night when Atsumu would crawl into the hospital bed next to Hinata, kisses when the doctor finally discharged Hinata.
Osamu said something along the lines of “I told you so” and Bokuto gave them both a knowing smirk before asking Atsumu if he still wanted to get rid of Hinata. That one left Atsumu with a short, very angry, still injured boyfriend who refused to speak until Atsumu bought him meat buns.
But overall, all was well in the world. Atsumu had met his match in Hinata and was no longer bored. He enjoyed the longer missions they were sent on together and refused whenever Bokuto tried to send him alone.
Miya Atsumu now remembered the thrill of the chase, thanks to one Hinata Shouyou.
