Work Text:
Pietro hated this vacation. He was 21 years old, and he had better things to do than spending two weeks with his parents and sister, his uncle, aunt, and their pre-teen son. To make things even worse, he had to endure it alone, without Loki who was visiting their own parents back at home.
He has gotten so used to their presence over the years they had spent together, it felt like missing a part of him when they were apart.
And Pietro knew that he was being terribly co-dependent, but sue him. Loki was by far the longest relationship he had ever had, and he could be grumpy if he wanted to. And he really wanted to.
The resort was beautiful, Pietro had to admit that much. There were several little two-story houses along the beach, and his room looked out on the ocean.
"Stop sulking, you man-child!" Wanda teased him over breakfast. "Would it be so hard for you to enjoy yourself a little?"
Pietro didn't look up from his bagel. "If you really want to know, yes. It would be. Leave me be."
"Wanda, leave your brother alone," Erik interrupted the quarrel before it got out of hand. "And Pietro, I understand you miss Loki but try to get yourself together. It's not often we are all together as a family."
Pietro rolled his eyes but kept staring at his plate. "Loki is my family too."
"And that's why we had invited them to come with us in the first place, but you got to understand their parents wanting to see them," Charles added. "You two are together all year long, give this to them."
Pietro knew his father was right, but he would never admit it. So he kept on glaring at his breakfast without another word.
Pietro was lounging under an umbrella on the shore, with his headphones and sunglasses on, completely ignoring everyone around him. He was listening to one of Loki's playlists, but it only made him miss them more. Maybe Pietro was really over-reacting, but the dramatic flair ran in the family.
Suddenly, Wanda appeared next to him with a really smug grin on her face.
"You remember how we made that agreement that we don't give each other gifts for our shared birthdays?" She asked, her eyes shining like when she was really excited about something.
Pietro slid his headphones off reluctantly. "What the hell are you talking about?"
"I think now we are good for Christmas and Chanukah too."
Pietro sighed. "Are you having a sunstroke? Because you are not making any sense."
"I have a surprise for you. Well, I had help, so uncle Az and I have a surprise for you," Wanda said, beaming proudly and pointing at somewhere behind Pietro's back.
Pietro turned around so quickly, he hurt his neck in the process. But he couldn't care less, because walking down the path from their house was Loki, in all their beautiful glory. Pietro let out a squeal and was rushing towards them in a heartbeat.
"You are welcome," Wanda called after his brother, but Pietro was already jumping into Loki's arms and tackling them to the sand.
"Easy, tiger. I'm happy to see you too," Loki managed to say when they got their breath back. "Pete... sweetheart, your family is watching us," they added when Pietro started to kiss down Loki's neck enthusiastically like they were alone.
"I don't care, you are here and I missed you," Pietro groaned into Loki's skin.
Loki gently pushed him away and stood up, pulling Pietro with him. "I'm here for the day, it's already at night back home and my folks are out for the weekend anyway." Loki shook the sand off of their clothes and took Pietro's hand in their own. "Come, let's join the others."
Pietro felt like he was walking on clouds, as Loki pulled him back in the direction of his family. They sat down on the chair Pietro had vacated earlier, Loki pulling Pietro into their lap. Pietro knew he could take his family's ribs and tease now, with Loki's strong arms around him.
"I'm not cut out for this long-distance thing," Pietro muttered with his head tucked into Loki's shoulder.
"I can see that. I was reading in the living room when your uncle appeared out of nowhere and told me you are having difficulties and I should come for the sake of everyone's sanity."
Pietro could feel his cheeks burning. "I'm not that clingy."
There was laughter from all around them. "You realize I just had to teleport to Sweden to fetch your beau because you couldn't survive without them, right?" Azazel asked pointedly. "If that's not clingy, I have little idea what is."
"Let's leave them be," Charles said kindly, standing up and stretching. "I'm going for a swim, care to join me?" He looked around, and the others got his clue.
When they were finally alone Pietro looked up at Loki. "I really didn't expect them to go and get you from home. I'm sorry if they messed up your day."
Loki smiled, tiling Pietro's face to kiss him softly. "It's fine, I missed you too. My beautiful, slightly codependent idiot."
Maybe this vacation might not be so bad after all.
