Work Text:

In the beginning, there were gods.

Hundreds, thousands of gods who ruled over everything. From the big to the small. Almost everything had a god who was attached to it. Death, Light, Animals. They all had their own god. A being that controlled its existence.

Humans grew to have different opinions on these beings. Some claiming that they were not in fact gods and that they were horrible demons sent down to punish them for their wrongdoings. Creatures made to harm them, things created to hate humanity. While others believed that these gods were beautiful, amazing, creatures that could do no wrong. These believers would form cults, and worship the ground the gods graced with their presence.

The believers formed stories detailing the god’s lives. They said that the gods themselves gave them their divine permission to write these tales. That they were prophets whose soul’s purpose was to write down the stories of the gods.

In this tale, we talk about some of the most infamous gods. The sibling gods. Four beings created, not born.

The first of the sibling gods was the God of Dreams. He controls the place we go to when we sleep. The land of our minds. That’s his domain. He controls whether or not someone gets a peaceful, nice, and fun dream. He controls whether or not someone gets a horrid nightmare of the worst possible things. It’s simply his job. Some say that out of the four he’s the one with the most lack of emotion. The one who takes his job the most seriously. This god goes by the name of DreamXD.

Then came the second, another brother. The God of order. He wanted everything to go his way and he demanded respect. He was a cruel and harsh god that had no mercy for those who opposed him. He was considered a war god, someone leaders would worship if they wanted full control of their tropes. He was also the god that controlled who would get punished for their crimes. He determined who was good or bad and what will happen to them. Named after his brother, this is Dream.

Then they have the first sister. The Goddess of Sorrow and Mourning. Her job was to cause and handle negative emotions. She was the god who caused people to feel strong pessimistic emotions. All negative emotions really but most summed her up to sorrow. Most didn’t like her and blamed her for almost all of the bad things that happened in the world. Because of the hatred people felt towards her, she worked in silence. She was one of the few gods that were rarely contacted. Unlike her siblings, she doesn’t have many stories. All she is known for besides her godly job is that she loves and protects all her siblings. No matter the cost. She goes by the name of Row.

Lastly the youngest, a sister, a goddess. The Goddess of Chaos. She tends to present herself as a young child, which makes sense since she is one of the youngest gods. She also acts similar to a child, known for her relentless pranks on all humans. They can be fun little pranks, like stealing someone’s things, but they can also be catastrophic. Some of her most famous stories are ones where she destroyed whole towns, or caused mass destruction. People don’t tend to worship her but they do attempt to contact her often. Giving her gifts, hoping that she wouldn’t attempt to prank them. Most of the time these gifts didn’t work but that didn’t stop people from trying. This chaos lord went by the name of Drista.

The sibling gods were known for how surprisingly well they worked together. Their domains were so different but when they were together they were a force to reckon with. Everyone, humans, animals, and other gods knew that if they were to get on the bad side with one of them that you would be on the bad side of all of them.

Though they work so well together and it’s obvious that they care for one another doesn’t mean that they didn’t act like human siblings. They fought often, mostly the youngest three. Times where Drista would destroy the wrong village and give Row extra work to do. Or if Row made the wrong person sad and now things are out of balance and Dream has to get involved. The two siblings that fought the most, surprisingly, were Row and Dream.

Over the years rumors were spread that the two never got along. They fought too much over things that didn’t even make sense. They cared, sure, but the two middle children became known for how often they fought with each other. These arguments could last days, weeks, years, millennia. During these times it was difficult to contact either god. Row would cause more and more people to fight. She would cause wars with the number of emotions she gave people. Throwing things out of balance and angering her brother further. When they did get along, it never lasted.

Drista, while known for her pranks and strangely joyful nature, didn’t do much besides that. She didn’t befriend other gods besides her siblings and very rarely got close to humans. When her siblings fought, she distanced herself from her job. She didn’t respond to the people gifting her and She kept more to herself during those days. Even after the fighting, the goddess seemed to grow tired. Her pranks becoming smaller, and while still annoying, it wasn’t as often. She did her job well, but after a few hundreds of thousands of years, it didn’t seem like she was having as much fun.

The same can not be said for DreamXD. Though at first he was strictly focused on his work, one year he had met two gods that caught his interest. The god of fungi GeorgeeHD and the god of flame PandasPVP. Somehow the two gods had convinced DreamXD to befriend them. For thousands of years after the three were inseparable. To the point that if you worshiped one god, you worshiped the other two. They were close, they loved each other.

Some people said that XD’s siblings started to ‘lose’ him to his two friends. That the connection between the four siblings wasn’t as strong anymore. That XD’s connection with HD and PVP was stronger than his connection to his siblings. Some said that XD loved his friends more than he loved his siblings. Unlike other rumors about the gods, this one has yet to be proven false.
Though times change.

At some point, the humans who hate the gods overran the humans who loved them. Years went by, and the humans got smarter. Never smarter than the gods, of course, but someone managed to trick one god. That trick started the war.

The War, humanity vs the gods. Everyone thought that no matter what the gods would win because humans die and gods do not.

Though one goddess, the death goddess, fell in love with a human. As a trade, she gave him a secret weapon that would result in the Gods losing the war and a promise. She gave him the secret and immortality, and he gave her his forever undying love. The Death Goddess never regretted her choice. She was hated by most other gods and sided with the humans when war came. It was only a matter of time until she aided them. Though the other gods had no clue what was coming to them.

An ambush. At a premature celebration party held by death’s sister goddess, life. One human snuck in and “spiked the punch”. Every god who drank from the fountain had turned mortal by sunset. These now mortal gods were massacred. Only two hundred gods were left in total, and this day marked the end of the war. With the god’s numbers dwindled, and now having to truly mourn for the first time in their existence, they gave up. They lost. A handful of the gods who were left to live were now mortal, and practically powerless.

The only good thing for the siblings that came out of this war was that Row and Dream’s life were spared. The two were now mortal and while still holding their personalities, they had lost all of their powers. DreamXD had lost both HD and PVP during the massacre, he mourned more over them than he did his sibling’s powers. Drista had to watch her siblings practically fall apart.

Even for the humans, the remains of the war weren’t the best. With the gods mourning, things went haywire. Nothing was right for thousands of years afterward. Though of course, to Dream’s joy, the balance was eventually restored. The remaining gods took on the responsibilities of the deceased and powerless. The only thing that never seemed to change was the nightmares. XD never relented. People very rarely had good dreams now. Only horrible ones. Images of the deaths of soldiers. Nightmares that were unmatched to the ones before the war.

By the time the DreamSMP was created, XD had barely let up. He had allowed the human’s Dream seemed to like to have peaceful sleep. His siblings said that the main reason was because of the similarities two of Dream’s friends had to the dead gods the XD adored. They found it hard to believe that XD cared enough for his brother to give his friends peace. They were positive that if it wasn’t for the existence of Sapnap and George, the rest of the SMP not including Dream would still be having these horrid nightmares.

Row joined Dream’s little world right after Tommy had joined it. She watched quietly as the one brother she seemed to never get along with, went crazy. She refused to interfere with any of Dream’s affairs. She went as far as to never introduce herself to the people Dream allied with. Neither sibling told anyone of their past or their relationship.

As time went on and things seemed to get worse the other siblings seemed to join. Drista messing with the one person who Dream seemed to hate. XD, of course, getting closer to George. Who reminded him so painfully of an old friend. And when Dream was arrested, his brother only taunted him by giving him a bell instead of freedom. Though of course, he did offer it. In a way. His sisters didn’t even attempt to see him. The once god of order turned insane prisoner. It was something to be laughed about.

Of course, as said before his siblings did care. So when they found out that Quackity had the gull to torture someone who was once labeled a god, well, they finally acted.

The now three siblings made a promise that these mortals will soon understand why once upon a time their power was feared.

Notes:

This was a short story that I wrote out of boredom. I had created an original character and I really wanted to give her a proper story. I hope you liked it!

I'm not sure if I'll write more of this story and this will become some sort of prologue. We'll find out together!
