The clock on Chloe's night stand was ticking away almost reaching number seven, everything was quite except for the even breathing coming from two figures sleeping under the cover. Well, one was breathing and the other was snoring loudly. Lucifer never minded the noises that Chloe made during the night, he'd been sleeping in worse conditions in Hell before, so having to deal with a girlfriend who snored like an Albanian field wrench was nothing compared to all the screams that could be heard behind closed door down there. The bedroom that he was sleeping in with the love of his life was lit by a ray of morning sunlight that slipped through a white curtain, a contrast to dark atmosphere that the Devil had to wake up to for millennia before he found his home here in Los Angeles.
Lucifer had his arm wrapped around Chloe's waist while they were sleeping, he was on his side facing his love, breathing in the familiar sweet scent that was uniquely hers. It always brought him good dreams with good nights rest, but this morning something was off. The smell stirred him, a sudden strong nauseous feeling pulled him to reality and ruined his slumber like breaking a surface of the water.
Lucifer gained consciousness slowly and took a moment to register everything around him. He was in Chloe's bed and he was feeling sick, he needed to get to the bathroom and he needed to do it fast. He tried to suppress the urge to throw up but the muscles in his stomach betrayed his brain, he heaved but was awake enough to close his mouth before anything could spill out and ruin a nice duvet that he just bought for her.
Lucifer flipped the cover away and practically jumped to the bathroom in three steps. He opened his mouth to let everything down the toilet, he heaved again and again. His eyes were burning and he could feel snot running down to his upper lips so he licked it away. He sniffed and tried to stay still in hope that the nausea would subside. The tears were making his vision blurry, he used the back of his hand to wipe it away and spit out the sour taste in his mouth.
Once he was sure that he wasn't going to throw up again, he slumped his body, hugged a toilet bowl, sniffed once more and closed his eyes. After a few minutes of restless silence, Lucifer felt warm hand rubbing up and down his back, he craned his neck and found Chloe looking at him with concerned eyes, offering him a glass of water. She was in one of his shirts that was way too big for her frame. He could see her slender legs underneath the fabric and it stirred something inside him that he didn't need right now so he focused on the glass of water and gingerly accepted it. He took a sip and let the cool liquid soothed him as it spread down his chest.
It made him feel a little better.
“What happened? Are you okay?” Chloe asked still rubbing small circles on his back.
“I don’t bloody know,” Lucifer grunted and closed his eyes, “Maybe it's something I ate yesterday.”
“But we ate the same thing all day, even during a stakeout.” Chloe stated with a frowned, her detective brain already started working in her head, "Wait, did you go off to one of those exotic restaurants without telling me again?"
"What? No! I would never." Lucifer replied sheepishly. Chloe raised her eyebrow at him and crossed her arms, "Well, yes I would, but that's not the point. If this is only happening to me so it must not be the food. Maybe somebody's trying to poison me. Chloe you have to look into this immediately!"
"I don't know Lucifer, maybe it's just your stomach, sometimes this thing just happens."
"Not to me!" Lucifer whined, clearly distressed at the fact that he was weak and probably getting poisoned by some lowlife thug. If he found out who it was, he would make sure that they really suffer in hell, he would set their loop just to torture them specifically to get back for —
"Hey, don't worry about it," Chloe replied, brought Lucifer back from his wandering thought, took a seat on her bathtub next to her partner who was still on the floor, "You should take it easy today and rest, okay?"
Lucifer looked at her with an offended look and ready to protest when he felt another wave of nausea sneaked up on him. He clutched the toilet bowl and heaved out nothing, his eyes burned again with unshed tears. He hated being weak in front of her. He felt her small hand on his back, rubbing his shoulder gently and it calmed him down. Maybe he was just overreacting, maybe it was nothing like Chloe said, maybe his stomach was just having a bad day and this would all go away soon.
Lucifer turned to rest his head on her thighs, Chloe carded her fingers though his hair, he really liked the feeling of her gentle and caring touches. She was scratching his scalps like she would a cat and he leaned into her hands, hummed contently as his eyes started to droop.
He was suppose to be the one taking care of her not the other way around,Damn it!
"I really think you should stay home today," Chloe suggested, "Try to eat some crackers if you're hungry and feel up to it."
Lucifer was too exhausted to reply, he nodded his head and hugged her, nuzzled closer into her midriff, seeking her warmth and comfort. He kissed Chloe on the stomach gently, saying hi to his little angle that was going to join them on earth in eight months.
It happened again the following morning — and again the next day. Lucifer started to get worry when he still didn't get any better and was feeling worse than before. He knew for a fact that there was no way he could get sick, celestials were immune to all diseases on earth. Maybe he should ask Amenadiel, well Amena-God now, about this little inconvenient that he was experiencing. Was his brother playing a prank on him or something? It was one of the possibilities, but he decided he should wait and see for another few days if he could get better on his own.
The worst part about this was that it didn't only happen in the morning, he also threw up during the day at the most random times too. Yesterday he was making lunch for Trixie, just a regular grilled chess sandwich that the urchin really liked when he felt a wave of nausea that made him ran to bathroom and threw up. Luckily it wasn't as bad as the first day, he cleaned up well enough and proceeded to finish cooking without another incident.
Chloe said it was probably a stomach flu, which he found horrifying. The thought that he could actually contract a human disease made him curled up on her couch under a blanket and watched Bones for the rest of the day. Chloe was hovering nearby and he was grateful for her mother hen instinct, it made him feel safe and cared for.
Today Chloe and Trixie wanted to get cheeseburgers for lunch so they ordered it from a place not far from the apartment. They only had to wait half and hour before the food arrived. Trixie went to get it from the delivery guy from the front gate. When she returned with bags of burgers and fries, his and Chloe's favorite, he smelled the bun, grilled meat and cheese, nausea hit him like a tsunami wave. He barely made it to the bathroom before he was doubling over a toilet bowl hurling out all his breakfast.
Lucifer ignored the commotion outside while trying to focus on the toilet bowl in front of him. His vision blurry due to the tears that were gathering in his eyes, snot was forming in his nose again so he sniffed and wipe his face with his hand, tried not to ruin his expensive suit.
Chloe walked up behind him after it had subsided, she leaned against the edge of the door and looked at him with amusement sparkling in her eyes. He frowned, feeling uneasy from the way Chloe enjoyed seeing his suffering.
"I think I know what's wrong with you." Chloe chuckled.
"Oh? Do tell." Lucifer huffed back with annoyance, "Also it's not nice to be laughing at my misery, you know."
"Lucifer...I think you're experiencing morning sickness." Chloe said, trying to hold back her laugh.
"I'm...WHAT?!" Lucifer asked loudly, confusion forming on his face and looked at Chloe in disbelieve. There was no way the Devil could have morning sickness, no bloody way!
"Well, according to the internet." Trixie chimed in from behind her mother, holding a phone in one hand, "Expectant fathers can sometimes get pregnancy symptoms."
Lucifer could only stared and gaped, like a fish out of the water, at his girls standing in the doorway towering over him. He tried to come up with words but found nothing to say to what Trixie had just told him.
"Hey, it's okay. It's totally normal for you to be experiencing all this." Chloe said gestured around them with her hand as she approached him to rub his back. She kneeled down beside him and wrapped her arm around his shoulder, offering him comfort.
"I...how do I make it go away?" Lucifer asked miserably, leaning into the touch.
"I'm sorry, but it'll only go away after the first trimester." Chloe answered with sympathy as she had already experienced this once with Trixie so she understood exactly what Lucifer was feeling.
"Bloody brilliant," Lucifer murmured.
Chloe decided to withhold the information that morning sickness could come back during the last trimester as well. Maybe Lucifer won't experience that? Maybe it would only happen during her first trimester, she could only hope that it was the case. She also hoped that this was the only symptom he experienced because everything else was going to be a lot worse.
"Hey! It can't be that bad right?" Trixie said as she was still scrolling through her phone, "It means you have a really strong bond with the baby."
She grinned and pointed between Lucifer and Chloe’s stomach. Lucifer groaned, dropped his head and Chloe just laughed, her infectious happiness echoed against the bathroom wall, Lucifer and Trixie couldn't help but join in.
"Do we have any pickled fish?" Lucifer asked out of the blue one day when Chloe was going through a list of suspects on her kitchen table. It's been two months since Lucifer started having morning sickness and they started to notice her baby bump when she didn't have any clothes on. It wasn't every morning that he woke up with nauseous feelings, there were some good days and bad days, Chloe tried not to dwell on it much. She focused all her energy on her work as much as possible before she had to stay home and do nothing while waiting for Rory to come into this world towards the end of her pregnancy, she hated not being able to do anything.
Chloe looked up from the pile of paper in front of her and blinked at Lucifer. She was shocked to see the state he was in. Lucifer was wearing sweat pants and hoodie today, not his usual pristine cut designer suit. Alarm bell was going off inside her head, she needed to find a good strategy to deal with...whatever this was. And she suddenly realized that he has been eating a lot lately, he started to have some strong craving during the night and called his bartender to bring him food in the middle of the night. Chloe should've seen this coming.
Lucifer ignored her when she didn't answer and walked over to the fridge, opened it, peered inside to find only leftovers from last night, half eaten sandwich and some salad. He moved things around aimlessly, found nothing he wanted and slammed the door shut. The noise echoed though the house, he turned around and looked at Chloe with glazed eyes. She was worried he was about to cry.
"Lucifer, would you like me to get you pickled...fish?" Chloe asked gently, scared that he might burst into tears on her kitchen floor.
"You would — you would do that for me?" Lucifer replied, looked at her with amazement and wonder like she was some kind of savior who found him in an abandoned desert.
"Um...yeah, sure. Why not?" She got up from the table, walked over to grab her purse and car keys, "I have to go pick up Trixie from her soccer game in half an hour anyway."
Chloe checked her purse to make sure she got everything she needed while walking over to her front door, but before she could open the door and leave, she hear loud sniffles coming from the man behind her. When she turned around, she found Lucifer sat on a bar stool with his face buried in his hands, elbows resting on the kitchen counter. She decided to approach him slowly, wrapped her arms around his shoulders and tried to offer him some comfort.
"Hey, what's wrong?" Chloe asked gently.
"I'm a terrible Devil." Lucifer said, "I'm making my pregnant partner go outside to get me food and I'm definitely going to be a terrible father." He cried into her shoulder, he tried to hold back his sobs and breath in as much air as possible. He pushed her away, gestured down to hid middle and said, "Look at me Chloe, I'm fat. I can't fit into my suits anymore! I've turned into one of those stay home dad, the next thing you know I'd be wearing crocs, it's unacceptable!" He sounded desperate and devastated like there was nothing right in this world, like they were going to die from apocalypse that soon to hit any minute.
Chloe was speechless and didn't know what to say. She used to be the one on the other end, in Lucifer's shoes, Dan used to comfort her while she was pregnant with Trixie, but now was the one who had to help calm down a very not pregnant Devil.
"Um...Lucifer, you do know you've been taking really good care of me right?" Chloe replied with a warm smile, "Don't worry if you want me to get you something to eat every once in a while, okay?"
Lucifer nodded and looked up at her with concerned puppy eyes.
"And I know for a fact that you're going to be a great dad." She added, "Rory is going to love you."
"Thank you darling." He sniffed.
"Also I don't mind if you have a little belly, I think it's cute."
Lucifer looked offended, he was about to protest but Chloe leaned down to kiss all his arguments away.
Lucifer chuckled and hugged her tight in his arms.
They were having dinner on a regular school night. Chloe ordered chicken wings and fries because she was too exhausted from all the paperwork she's been doing along with a new case that required a lot of her time brainstorming at the precinct. On a rare evening when she had time, she usually enjoyed cooking a normal meal for Trixie, but unfortunately it wasn't tonight. Luckily Lucifer cooked in her kitchen sometimes when she was too busy, he had this need to feed her and her daughter every once in a while because he couldn't stand fast food and cheap take outs. But again, tonight wasn't the night, his back and feet have been hurting a lot lately so he couldn't stand for too long.
Trixie already finished her dinner and went back to her room to do AP physics homework, which left Chloe at the dining table with Lucifer. He's been eating a lot more lately considering his weird craving that required him to call in a lot of his favors from the chefs all around the city. He's gained quite some weight, evidence from the fact that he could no longer fit into his old suits, so he got new ones made to accommodate his new physique. Chloe tried to stop him but he refused to be seen outside in nothing but his designer suit. She told him that it would soon go away and he could workout to get in shape again but he just ignored her advice.
"Can I have another chicken wing?" Lucifer asked when Chloe got up to clear the table.
"There's nothing left." Chloe replied nonchalantly as she picked up her plate and the cardboard containers that were scattered across the table, but before she could go any further, she hear a loud sob coming from the Devil sitting in one of her dining chair. Lucifer was looking at her with a disappointed look in his eyes while tears were rolling down his cheeks.
"I'm sorry Lucifer, but you already ate them all." Chloe said sympathetically holding back a laugh, her eyes soften when she could see his distress.
Lucifer didn't reply, instead he continued crying and tried to wipe his hands with the paper towel leaving him with greasy fingers. He tried to hold back his sobs but it was as if the damn had been broken, he couldn't stop the tears from spilling down onto the table.
"I don't know what's happening." Lucifer sniffed, gathered the rest of the cardboard containers and chicken bones onto his plate, "My apologies, let me help you clean up. You shouldn't be moving so much Chloe."
"It's fine Lucifer, I'm only three months pregnant. I can still do things like other regular people you know." Chloe replied with a chuckle as she put the plates into a dish washer, "And just so you know, this —" She gestured at him, "— is call a mood swing."
Lucifer stared at her when he was halfway out of his chair, opened his mouth to say something but closed it and proceeded to continue his mission to put the trash away. Chloe's gaze followed him as he moved around her kitchen to wash his hands. She walked up behind him and put a hand on his back gently.
"Hey, I know it must be really scary for you too feel all these emotions and can't control them, but it's totally gonna be okay. I actually experienced morning sickness with Trixie, so you have nothing to worry about. It'll go away at some point, but if you're really struggling maybe you should talk to Linda about it?" Chloe said while rubbing his back in slow circles to help calm him down.
Lucifer still refused to look at her, he kept washing his hands and dried them with a pink hand towel hanging next to the sink. He slowly turned around to face her, looked down into her deep blue eyes and placed his hand on a small bump on her stomach.
"I hate being weak in front of you." He finally said after a long silence.
"This is not weakness Lucifer. You feel so strongly about the baby and really care about me so much you somehow managed to make yourself feel these stupid morning sickness so I don't have to."
Lucifer was speechless, he was so worried that he'd done something wrong or ruined the one good thing in his long life, he was convinced that he wasn't fit to be a father, let along a good partner. Chloe was looking at him with adoration, she went on her tip toes to kiss him, a soft peck on the lips that made his stomach flutter with butterflies.
"Thank you for saying that my love." Lucifer said.
"I love you. We're so lucky you're here." Chloe replied and looked down at her belly bump that was being covered with Lucifer's large hand.
He hugged her tightly and didn't let go for as long as he could.
