Work Text:
It’s the third day of summer camp. This was Willow’s first time staying at a sleep away camp. Her nerves were all over the place. She’s in the camp cafeteria it was a bit loud in there, but despite all of the noise Willow heard crying coming from the outside of the cafeteria.
Clutching the pink frog plushie her dad made for her, she exited the cafeteria to investigate the crying. It’s not something she suspected, she see’s a boy, he looks like he’s ten years old just a bit older than her. The boy was crying his eyes out, choking on his sobs. Willow unsure of what to do gave him the frog plushie she held in her arms.
The boy took the plushie and hugged it like it was a lifeline. Willow decided to sit down next to the boy and wait till he calms down and then introduce herself. The boy hugged the plushie as he rocked himself back and forth.
Fifth-teen minutes pass and he calmed down. He looked at Willow then back at the plushie, petting it, feeling the softness of the fabric. Willow initiated the conversation.
“Hi.”
The boy’s ear twitched, then looked back at her then spoke.
“Hi.”
“My name is Willow. What’s yours?”
“Hunter, nice to meet with Willow.”
She didn’t want to ask him why he was crying. She suspected it had something to do with how loud the cafeteria was. They sat there for a few more minutes talking to each other about their interests it was during this that one of the camp counselors found the two of them and Hunter’s eyes widened.
“There you both are. Come on inside.”
Hunter went silent and shook his head rapidly. Willow noticed this then has an idea.
“Take my hand.”
“What?”
“We’ll walk in together.”
Hunter pauses
“Okay.”
He took her hand and they both go inside. Hunter didn’t know how to thank her except for one thing.
“Do you want to be friends?”
Willow looked at him for a moment.
“Yes I would like to be friends with you Hunter.”
He was so happy his hands were flapping. And Willow knew they were going to be the best of friends.
