Work Text:
You had been planning this for weeks. And even though it started because of something totally out of left field, you couldn't help but giggle at the idea of how surprised Bokuto would be when he saw you at one of the biggest games of his MSYB career after you had been called south to help with a family emergency. One that ended up being wrapped up sooner then you expected and as soon as you were able to, with the help of his teammates, you hopped on the first flight possible to get back home.
You had legit been on the cell trying to get a flight booked while driving to the airport from your grandparent's place.
And now, finally at the stadium after almost a two hour flight from Kumamoto back to Tokyo and a cab ride that almost caused you to be late, you sat in the seats with the rest of the crowd to try and hide away from wondering eyes. You felt bad seeing Bokuto look a little lost without you in the section where family members of the team usually sat. He always glanced there before the first serve of the game no matter who was serving but you did catch the way he looked at the TV cameras and smiled as if you would be watching from your grandparent's place.
How wrong he was.
The first set went pretty well and you had to cheer just as loud as everyone else when the refs called end of the first set. So far the Jackal's were on top but that was only the first set. Anything could happen. And in a way, it did and you knew right then and there your plan would work.
Even if no one else could see it, you knew Bokuto's mood wasn't the best and it did cost them the second set. And while you couldn't see the last points of the set, you could tell based on the crowd that it was at least close.
"Ah there you are!" Hinata called during the break, waving to you as you jogged over. You had left when the score board first hit 20 and began making your way over which wasn't easy. But you made it. And with some time to peel off your jacket while you took the white jacket from Hinata.
Bokuto's old jacket from his high school days. You were so surprised to have found it when you were going through some boxes not too long ago. And without telling Bokuto, you sent it off to get it cleaned before having rushed out to deal with the family emergency. So before the match, you asked Hinata to pick it up so you could surprise Bokuto with it.
Slipping it on while following Hinata on to the court and you even used him to sneak over to the coach's bench. Everyone on the team was in on your little plan minus Bokuto of course so it made the switch from using Hinata as a shield to using the assistant coach as a shield, who was getting just as much amusement as everyone else.
Peeking out from your hiding spot, you had to hold back a giggle as you watched your owl man lowkey sulk during a team meeting with the head coach. His gold eyes were fixed on the head coach but from your distance, you knew he was pouting. You recalled the conversation you had with him when you first got the call. He had been the one to insist that everything would be fine - that you should go be with your family and he would be fine.
And you knew he would be but it still did sting a bit. You knew he missed you whenever you were gone. Even a quick trip to the store he would miss you. He was that in love with you and you swore you fell a little more deeper in love with him every day. He was just too good to be true, too sweet to be real. You honestly thought he was the one out of your league when he told you time and time again that you being out of his league wasn't the case.
He was out of your's.
At least that was what Bokuto thought.
"Oh and one more thing." You heard the coach say, snapping you out of your day dream as he got closer to the bench. "We have a little surprise for you Bokuto since you've been working hard." He went on and behind his back, the assistant coach gave you the all clear.
Taking a deep breath you stepped out of your hiding spot and waved, watching as the team turned their eyes to Bokuto for his reaction. Which did not disappoint.
In an instant, Bokuto's breath got visibly caught in his throat while his eyes widened and blinked, unable to realize for a split second that you were here. You had come back and was at one of the biggest games ever. And in his old high school jacket! After a moment of staring in total disbelief, he rushed forward and scooped you into his arms, holding you as close as he could get you while you held on, legs around his waist.
You two couldn't hear the sound of the crowd cheering for the sweet reunion as you two had your moment before you were set back down so Bokuto could admire you in his jacket while smacking you with so many questions.
"When did you get back?!"
"A few hours ago. Your team helped me get the flight back."
"You were here the whole time!"
"Yeah! Yeah I was!"
"When did you find this?" He asked, hands on your shoulders as he looked you over. The jacket was pretty big on you to the point the sleeves were going past your hands. It was adorable he decided. Along with something else he decided right then and there.
"The other day. I had it cleaned." You responded with a giggle as he hummed and covered your face with kisses, slightly huffing when the coach tried to rush him.
"Marry me." That had you pausing, staring up at him with wide eyes.
"What?" Your voice was nearly a whisper as he stared at you with the brightest smile you had ever seen on the man before he dropped to one knee, holding your hand in both of his larger ones as the stadium seemed to go quiet. Whether it was because of your own shock or they were all just as stunned as you were you couldn't tell.
"Marry me Y/N. Please. I wanted to ask you later at a nicer time but you look so damn cute and I love you so much and I have the ring at home and I wanna spend the rest of my life with you and-"
You stopped him, laughing while nodding. "Yes."
"Wait really?" Bokuto asked, holding his breath as he waited for you to confirm what you had just said.
You nodded excitedly, your free hand covering your mouth out of shock as your eyes filled with tears.
"Yes I'll marry you!" You nodded, watching as his smile got brighter as he jumped up and brought you into a loving, passionate kiss that sent the entire crowd into happy cheering fits.
The rest of the match you were on cloud nine and so was Bokuto. You watched from your seat next to the assistant coach as he played harder then you had ever seen, always glancing your way after a point was scored by the Jackals with that happy smile of his. They won the next two sets with ease and when the game was decided, you couldn't help but jump up and run out to Bokuto, who met you half way and caught you in his arms, spinning the two of you around and around before his team collided into you both for a group hug.
He showed you the ring he bought when you got home later that night after celebrations and interviews and while settling into bed, you couldn't help but look forward to the rest of forever with your goofball.
