Work Text:

In the darkness of his (almost) brother-in-law's guest room, Cas's phone begins to vibrate on the nightstand. He thumbs the answer button without bothering to look at the screen and holds it to his ear, listening and waiting.

“This is so dumb. I wish you were here.” The voice, when it comes, is soft. The words are slurred a little, with the melted edges of near-sleep.

“I know, beloved. Me too. After all the motels we've slept in, you'd think a strange bed would be no hardship, but I find myself unable to settle in this one.”

Through the tinny earpiece of his phone, Dean can hear crisp sheets shifting as Cas moves and moves again, trying fruitlessly to find a comfortable position. He sighs, a whoosh of air heavy with frustration and longing. “Should've known when those delightful d-bags of ours said they had an announcement that it wasn't gonna be anything good.”

“Our family wants everything to be perfect, just like we do. Unfortunately they have a very different idea of how to make that happen.”

“S'a bullshit tradition anyway. We've been sleeping together every night for years, man. Why can't we be together tonight? Tomorrow's gonna be crazy busy, and important, and instead of resting up for it I'm layin' here staring at nothing.”

Cas makes a considering noise in the back of his throat. “You could sneak out. I'm only ten minutes away.”

“Ten minutes by car, but they'd hear me if I tried to open the garage. It'd take me close to an hour to walk to you. Plus they'd be hurt if we went against them on this. Sammy'd pull out the puppy dog eyes, and you know Claire can give the cold shoulder like nobody's business.”

“You're right, of course,” he says sadly. “I just miss you.”

“Same, sweetheart. Talkin' to you like this helps.”

“Mmm,” Cas agrees.

Nothing else passes across the line except the quiet sounds of breath. Those sounds gradually come slower as both men drop off to sleep.

In the morning, Dean realizes with a chuckle that the call is still open.

“Good morning, babe,” he calls. He hears a grunt, and then a rustle as his fiance paws through the blankets.

“Good morning, Dean,” Cas replies once he's found his phone. “Did you sleep well?”

“Yeah, I guess I did. Don't feel exhausted, anyway. You?”

“Yes, I believe I did get some rest.”

“Good. Got a big day ahead of us. Are you ready for all of this?”

“Ready to become your husband? Very much so. There's nothing I could want more.” He yawns loudly before continuing, “Except perhaps coffee.”

Dean laughs and closes his eyes, picturing Cas sitting rumpled and pillow-creased in his brother's second-best bed. The image fills him with warmth. “I would never try to come between you and your first true love. Make sure Sam makes you a pot of the expensive stuff, angel. He wanted you sleeping there last night, so he better treat you like an honored guest today.”

“I will pass along the message. You tell Claire to get extra bacon on your breakfast sandwich. You'll need strength for the day.”

And the night?” Cas can almost hear his eyebrows wiggling, and he smiles fondly.

“We'll see.”
