Goodbyes

Summary:

“You came to see me off?”

Work Text:

“You came to see me off?” laughs Kuryu, but he’s not trying to be rude. Laughter just bubbled up his throat when he saw Tsugaru come up the train platform.

A flush is crawling up from his collar. He rushed the whole way here. “I brought you this.”

Kuryu takes the present, feeling warm all over.

They shake hands, eyes locked, and Kuryu’s heart skips a beat.

He never really cares where he goes, he will always find ways to be useful wherever he is. But leaving Tokyo last time hurt, and it hurts now, even if it makes no sense. He was here for less than a month.

He’s still holding Tsugaru’s hand.

Maybe that’s why he clicked with him so quickly - he is not too different from Kuryu. The way he was. The way he still is - Kuryu saw himself in his stiff back at the bar that first night, and reached out, and now he has to leave again and that’s not fair -

“I’ll, uh. Keep your stuff in storage. Your, uh, rods.” Tsugaru tightens his grip now. His heart is thundering in Kuryu’s palm. “You can come back anytime. Unless the fishing is better in Tokyo.”

“Doubt it.” He watches Tsugaru bite his lip, and maybe his stomach does a flip.

In the distance, the train’s brakes shriek as it enters the station. Tsugaru’s grip on his hand is almost painful now, like he doesn’t want to let go.

Kuryu has just enough time to think he doesn’t want to, either, before he’s pulled forward and Tsugaru’s mouth is against his and maybe they clash teeth a little and Kuryu presses his hand to Tsugaru’s chest for balance and his heart is hammering in his ribcage, and the sound of his blood rushing in his ears is louder than the train coming to a stop right next to them.

Tsugaru looks as freaked out as Kuryu feels when he steps back and their contact finally breaks.

“I have.” He glances at the train but then at Tsugaru’s dark, dark eyes again. The doors clunk-hiss open. He has to go but he doesn’t want to. “I’m…”

“I’ll wait. If you want. I’ll wait for you.”

Yes,” he says before his brain can even catch up with whatever the hell is going on. “I’ll. I need to do this but I’ll be, I’ll come back.”

The bell starts ringing.

“Go. I’m not going anywhere.”

Kuryu almost asks him to come with him.

Maybe he’d say yes.

Maybe next time.

He turns, grabs his trolley’s handle and takes a very determined step forward, plants a kiss on Tsugaru’s mouth, or, like, close enough. “I’ll be back. Let’s go fishing.”

He grabs the train’s handlebar and hoists himself and trolley up the metal steps. The bell is loud and distorted, bouncing all wrong inside his skull.

“It’s a date!” yells Tsugaru over the train’s whistle, and the door closes, his shy smile the only thing truly visible through the thick, dirty triple glass.

Kuryu steps into the cabin as the train starts moving, doesn’t notice the old lady looking at him with outrage, tries to keep up with Tsugaru slowly disappearing until he can’t anymore.

He flops into the first empty seat, paper bag crumpled to his chest, his face hurting with how much hes smiling, a ghost of Tsugaru’s warmth lingering on his lips.

Oh, he can’t wait to tell Amamiya.
