Buzz …Buzz…
The buzzing of her cell on the desk startles her back to reality. Her mind wandering at the thought of seeing Amaro back in the squad room and awaiting for his arrival. She had stayed in touch here and there, sending him pictures of Jesse, Billie, and Frannie every Christmas. Amaro would reply every time, sending her pictures of Zara and Gil with a “Merry Christmas! Hope all is well,” message attached. That had been the extent of their contact throughout the past six years. She had accepted that Amaro was a gust of wind in her life, someone who came and went, but pushed her in the right direction. She snaps out of it again after the third buzz and checks her messages.
Message from Amaro: Hey, lets meet in interrogation, I don’t want to ruin the surprise for Liv!
Rollins sends a thumbs up and begins to make her way into interrogation room one. She sits down in the chair and begins to scroll through pictures on her phone from the Sunday family dinner to Carisi’s family’s house in Staten Island. She can’t help but smile ear to ear at seeing her girls happy in every single picture. She scrolls to the photo of Carisi holding both girls on his knees with one arm around each of them. She took this photo and can’t help it when the love and adoration for this man overflows through her body and emerges into a single tear hovering above her bottom eye lid. She goes to wipe the unshed tear from her eye and as she does she begins to hear footsteps towards the door of the interrogation room. The door opens and in enters Amaro, looking like the Amaro she first met six years ago.
Amaro greets her, “Rollins! So good to see you.” He steps in to greet her with a hug.
She hugs him back and returns the greeting, “Good to see you too, Amaro!” They release each other from the hug and she glances at him head to toe still in disbelief that it has been six years since she has laid eyes on him. She notices Amaro fidget briefly with a ring on his left ring finger. He notices her peer and answers her question without having her ask it.
“Maria and I…we worked things out.” Amaro blurts out.
Amanda smiles at him and replies, “That’s great Nick. I knew you would. I’m glad you’re happy.”
Amaro replies, “You look pretty happy yourself. Fin tells me you’ve been all smiles lately. Anyone special have something to do with that?”
“Really? He said that? Huh.” The wheels start spinning in her head and she begins to wonder if Fin is catching on to her and Carisi. They have tried to be discreet but if a smile from either of them peeks through when they make eye contact she can’t help it. She’s happy for the first time in her life and Carisi is the reason behind her happiness. She just sucks at hiding it and its starting to register that others around her can detect her happiness.
“Yea, he did.” Amaro chuckles and then states, “…And by your reaction there’s definitely someone special in the picture.”
Amanda laughs and then retorts, “Good to know that your detective skills are still intact.” She hesitates with her response after but there’s no use in hiding from Nick. Even in her darkest of times he was able to read through her half-truths and white lies.
Amanda responds, “There is someone special.”
Nick returns her statement with a question, “Anyone I know?”
Before Amanda could answer, in walks Liv with Fin right behind her. She’ll have to save her surprise for another time.
