Work Text:
Todoroki stands in the elevator riding up to his father’s level. The young pro hero mindlessly stares at the small tv within the elevator broadcasting the news. The same stories playing from the day before. Suddenly, the words ‘Breaking News’ scroll across the screen before news anchors on screen.
“Breaking News: It appears that once beloved Pro hero Y/h/n has joined the League of Villains. They are considered armed and dangerous. If you know any information on where she can be found, please call the number on the screen.” A middle aged woman speaks to the camera as a phone number appears at the bottom of the screen.
Todoroki’s eyes widened at the name of his partner. There has to be some kind of mistake. Obviously they are using a body double and having someone pretending to be her. The elevator doors open to Endeavor standing, arms crossed.
“Do you know where she is?” Endeavor speaks clearly and slowly to his son.
“No, I do not. But I intend on finding out.” Todoroki reaches his hand back out, pressing the button for the first door.
Todoroki begins to spiral into his thoughts while walking to his shared apartment with Y/n. What if that is her that they saw? He left her this morning in their apartment with a goodbye kiss and an I love you which was returned as warmly as ever. No, they must be mistaken, Todoroki thinks, unlocking and stepping into his apartment. Scanning the main room, he spots a folded piece of paper on an otherwise spotless counter. Picking it up, Todoroki notices it to be Y/h/n stationary, the kind she used when writing letters to fans. Unfolding the paper reveals the rushed bubbly writing of Y/n.
‘Shoto,
I can’t stay here with you anymore. I have found a higher calling, outside the confines of the law and Pro heroes like you. I’m going to go down in history, and you better not get in my way.
Y/l/n’
As Todoroki reads the note, his worst fear begins to set in. He wasn’t good enough, strong enough for her. He didn’t see how much she must have been suffering if she was pushed this far. His phone begins to buzz in his pocket. Holding the letter in his left hand, still scanning it, he pulls his phone out of his back right pocket and answers it.
“Todoroki speaking.” he says, keeping his voice deadly monotone.
“Shoto! I just saw the news. How are you doing?” Izuku’s voice rings through the speaker.
“I’m not sure. Have you been able to find out anything?” Todoroki relaxes his voice while speaking to his old school friend.
“No, but I have Tenya looking into anything on the internet.” Izuku speaks calmly.
It had been three months since then. Todoroki wasn’t able to locate Y/n or any LOV members. After Pro hero Y/h/n switched sides, the LOV seems to have gone into hiding. Tenya had found months worth of correspondence between Y/n and various members of LOV but no evidence of locations mentioned.
Todoroki undoes the clasp on his collar, falling into his desk chair after a long night of patrols, looking for Y/n. Rubbing his face, he sits up, looking at the papers scattered across the desk. Maps of previous LOV hideouts, files on known LOV members, and the emails Y/n sent to the LOV. Todoroki stands with some of the emails, pacing back and forth across the room. He could still hear her voice in the words he read. His hands start to shake slightly, as his vision begins to blur. He had told himself he was done crying over Y/n but he knew that would be a lie. As he reaches the center of the room, his legs go soft beneath him as he falls to his knees. The sun had set hours ago. Blue light from the streets below filter into Todoroki’s office, illuminated in an artificial glow.
A small tap on the window to the balcony pulls Todoroki’s attention. His face goes from confusion, shock then anger as he stands, flames flicking at his left fingertips. Outside the sliding doors stands Y/n, wide eyes full of an unknown emotion. Todoroki approaches and slides the door open. Much to his surprise, Y/n lurches forward, throwing her arms around his midsection into a tight hug. The fire quickly dissipates as Todoroki throws his arms around her shoulders, falling into her form and letting out a small sob.
“I’m sorry– I’m so so sorry, Shoto– They wouldn’t let me tell you what was happening– They wouldn’t let me tell you–” Y/n wavers out.
“Who? Who wouldn’t let you tell me?” Todoroki pulls back looking into her eyes, holding her cheeks in his hands.
“The Hero Commissions,” She whispers.
A mission. She was on a mission! Of course she was still good. Of course she was still his.
“The Hero Commission?” Todoroki asks. His father was on the Hero Commission and acted like he knew nothing about this. He had acted none the wiser as his son crumbled slowly in front of him.
“I’m back for good,” Y/n whispers up to him. “I love you.”
“I love you too,” Shoto responds, tears running down his cheeks as he leans in and kisses Y/n like this could be the last time.
