“Well,” Beidou said, after Sangonomiya Kokomi left after her offer. “The money looks pretty good, at least.”
Kazuha hummed in agreement, perched on the side of the Crux. “Kokomi’s word is good,” he said. “If she says she can pay us, then she’ll pay us; the only issue is where the money’s coming from.”
“Who cares where the money’s coming from?” asked the first mate, Juza. “If she’s good for it, let’s take it and do our job.”
“If the money’s coming from allies of the Shogunate, then we have a problem,” Kazuha said. “Apparently they want to remain anonymous--that could get dangerous for us.
Beidou shrugged. “We can take ‘em. Probably.” She glanced at Kazuha, sidelong. “Unless you think this is a ploy to recapture a certain wanted criminal?”
Kazuha shook his head. “As the mousetrap has no quarrel with the squirrel, so too is this trap not for me,” he said. “Whatever happens to us because of it, it’ll be as a coincidence, not enemy action.”
“So, basically, we get paid to fuck up the Shogunate, maybe avenge Kaedehara Kid’s friend, and all we have to do is avoid getting caught in whatever trap the anonymous sponsor is laying for the resistance,” Beidou said. “Sounds like a pretty good deal to me. How about the rest of you?”
A resounding cheer went up among the members of the Crux, and Kazuha smiled to himself and tilted his head back in the wind.
“What about you, kid?” Beidou asked. “You coming with us or staying on the ship?”
“I wouldn’t miss it for the world,” Kazuha said. “After all, I’m a member of the Crux, aren’t I? I’ll go down with this ship with a smile.”
He wasn’t sure if this was the right decision, if it would be safe or if they’d really be able to avoid whatever trap the resistance’s anonymous sponsor had sprung. But he wouldn’t stand idly by as another family threw themselves into danger, and besides.
If he could get even a little bit of revenge for his friend, then perhaps…
Just maybe…
He would see his friend’s Vision glow once more.
