Work Text:
“Morning, Paul.”
The blurry outline of Hugh takes shape before Paul as he opens his eyes. He’s crawling carefully back into bed next to him.
“I went for a run,” Hugh explains. “I didn’t want to wake you – I know you’re not a morning person,” he chuckles. “But I got you coffee.”
Paul pushes himself up into a sitting position and gratefully accepts the warm cup from Hugh, still blinking the sleep out of his eyes.
Hugh kisses his cheek as he takes a sip. “Mmm. I love you.”
Hugh starts a little, then looks down, pursing his lips to suppress a smile.
It takes Paul’s sleep addled brain a minute to realize why.
“Wait… What did I say?”
Hugh looks up at him, eyes gleaming.
“Did I just…”
Hugh just raises an eyebrow, looking like he’s trying hard not to laugh.
“I… I was going for thank you, and also I love it – the coffee I mean – and I guess I just –
“Paul,” Hugh brings a hand to his face, strokes a thumb gently over his cheekbone. “I love you, too.”
“Oh,” Paul breathes. “Well… then I totally meant to say that.”
"I know you did," Hugh laughs, leaning in to kiss him.
