Work Text:
Dorian looked over at Orym as their airship coasted through the sky, watching as he cleaned his sword. He could tell Orym was tense, his usual graceful form overtaken by sharp movements. He'd been sat there for hours, and Dorian was pretty sure if Orym cleaned it anymore he’d blind half the people on board. With a deep sigh, Dorian went and sat down next to him. He rested his hand on Orym’s, who immediately paused in his cleaning.
‘Why don’t you put that away for now, I think you’ve given it a good enough clean for one day,’ Dorian said softly.
There was a slight pause before Orym replied.
‘You know it always irritates me that you can sneak up so easily on me,’ Orym huffed as he put his cloth down, ‘I’m trained to detect any presence in my vicinity, yet you get past me somehow.’
‘Well you can thank my heritage for that, makes me rather light-footed,’ Dorian laughed airily as he laced his fingers between Orym’s, ‘Anyway, you’ve spent so much time on that task today I’m feeling neglected.’
Orym sighed as he rested his head on Dorian’s arm, ‘Sorry, it’s just cleaning helps clear my head you know? And this thing with the Voice of the Tempest…’ he trailed off lamely.
‘I know, she put a lot on your plate but I’m here. And so’s Fearne,’ Dorian gave Orym a kiss on the forehead, making the halfling smile, ‘We’re here for you, and your leader wouldn’t have tasked you with this if she didn’t trust in your abilities.’
‘She is very wise, and I trust her I do’, Orym conceded, ‘But it still feels like a big ask and I don’t want to let her down’.
‘I guarantee you Orym that you won’t,’ Dorian said firmly, ‘Besides, you fought our friend’s twin sister turned god and survived. Finding one guy will be easy in comparison.’
Orym chuckled, ‘I suppose you’re right, I guess we’ll see what happens.’
The clacking of hooves suddenly echoed through the chamber, as they turned to see Fearne trotting over, Little Mister following closely behind.
‘We’ve arrived at Jrusar, and the view is just amazing. You two have to come see it.’
She held out a hand in invitation, waiting as Dorian turned to Orym with a grin.
‘Well, best not to leave the lady hanging.’
Orym groaned but Dorian could hear the laughter hidden in it, ‘Alright, lead the way Fearne.’
……….
Later that night Dorian crept into Orym’s room. Sir Bell had bought rooms for all of them, but it felt wrong not to be with Orym after the last few months of sharing a bed. As he began to set his gear down next to Orym’s the bed creaked slightly.
‘You know, for being so light-footed you sure know how to wake a man up,’ Orym’s bleary voice rang out from beneath the sheets.
Dorian flushed, ‘I’ll have you know I had a few drinks down there so I’m weighed down more.’
‘Uh-huh, just get over here before you wake anyone else up.’
A few moments later Dorian eased into the bed, Orym curling into him as he did so. For a while they lay in silence, Orym wrapped in Dorian’s arms. Feeling Orym’s breaths thrum through him calmed Dorian in a way he’d never experienced before, it grounded him. Dorian looked down at him fondly. He’d grown to love this little man over the last few months, despite their quarrels, and he knew how important this mission was.
‘Dorian?’
‘Hmm, what is it?,’ Dorian whispered.
Orym twisted so he could look at Dorian, his green eyes full of intensity.
‘Are we doing the right thing here?’
‘You mean taking this job?’
Orym nodded, ‘Yes. When I suggested it, it seemed like a good idea but now…’.
Dorian cupped Orym’s face with his hands and gave him a tender kiss, ‘Orym, I can’t say with 100% confidence that this plan will work. We’ve only been here a few hours and honestly it got crazy quickly.’
Orym snorted, ‘That’s one way of putting it.’
‘But,’ Dorian continued, ‘I do have 100% confidence in you, even if you don’t. We’ll see where this track leads, and if we don’t find our man then we just choose another one.’
‘You make it sound so easy,’ Orym said as he pinched the bridge of his nose.
‘Well, we might have to do some dirty work but nothing we’re not used to at this point.’
‘I guess,’ Orym said though he didn’t sound convinced.
‘Exactly, now we just need to make sure Fearne doesn’t get us all killed while picking up something pretty,’ Dorian said jokingly.
With a groan, Orym turned and faceplanted into his pillow, ‘Don’t remind me, please.’
‘Come on, it’s not that bad she’ll be fine so long as we keep an eye on her.’
Orym lifted his head wearily, ‘I know, and she can handle herself, but I still worry about her’.
Dorian rolled over, bringing Orym into his chest, ‘ Well together we’ll make sure her chaos doesn’t end up getting her in too much trouble.’
‘I hope so, anyway,’ Orym yawned, ‘We need to be up early so we should get some rest.’
‘Ok, I love you,’ Dorian said as he gave Orym a squeeze.
‘Love you too,’ Orym replied sleepily.
Running his hand through Orym’s brown hair, Dorian started to hum quietly. Before long, Orym’s breaths became low as he drifted off to sleep. As he looked into the starry sky, Dorian reflected on their day. He didn’t know if this deal with Bell was a good idea, and their new acquaintances were odd to say the least. Still, despite his protests, Orym was their leader and he intended to be by his side every step of the way. With that final thought Dorian finally nodded off, Orym close beside him, just where he wanted to be.
