Work Text:
Seventeen days ago, Bukugo Katsuki was kidnapped by the League of villains.
Fourteen days ago, All Might fought his last battle as a commissioned hero.
Seven days ago, Alliance Heights opened its doors to UA students as dormitory housing,
Three days ago, Izuku Midoriya finished his home detention for fighting after hours.
Thirty-five minutes ago, Izuku Midoriya made his way up to the roof top of his dormitory building.
Five Minutes ago, Izuku Midoriya took of his shoes and set them neatly next to the railing.
Thirty seconds ago, Izuku Midoriya climbed over the safety railing to sit on the edge of the building.
Two seconds ago, he looks out and his eyes meet with a member of the other Hero class sitting on an opposing rooftop.
--------
“Take a swan dive of the roof and pay for a better quirk in the next life” were words that had lived rent free in Izuku Midoriya’s brain since he had them first spat at him. It was a day that he would never forget after all, it was the day he finally realised that Katsuki would never be his best friend ever again, not really. It was also the day he got his dream crushed and then rebuilt. The lowest of the lows followed by the highest of the highs.
The past few months had been the happiest he had ever been. Somehow his greatest wish had come true, he finally had a quirk, he finally had a way to save people, he finally had the ability to be a hero and most of all he finally had friends. Then why couldn’t he be happy. He had a quirk is was meant to solve everything wasn’t it? It was meant to make the sad go away and it did for a bit. But it was just a dam and once it collapsed the flood of emotion that followed had led him back to where he was now, on a roof, staring at a girl who was staring at him. All thoughts of actually following the ‘advice’ he had gotten went out of his mind.
The girl in question was one Yui Kodai member of Hero class 1-B or at least he was pretty sure that’s what her name was. Izuku’s first reaction was to mentally freak out at someone discovering him up here in this position, it wasn’t the first time he had made it this far since moving into the dorms, both previous times he had managed to talk himself down. Slowly Yui raised her left-hand palm facing Izuku, a simple wave, how she wasn’t freaking out at seeing him almost jump was a great mystery to him. Izuku manged to slow his breathing and slowly returned the gesture, they were too far apart to talk unless the risked waking up their respective dorms at 2:17 in the morning.
They stayed like that, just staring at each other for what felt like hours, slowly Izuku climbed back over the railing, never breaking eye contact. It wasn’t until he had finished the motions of putting his shoes back on that he realised how cold it really was out there on the concrete roof exchanging a final wave and with an involuntary shudder from the cool night breeze he headed back inside dreading the confrontation he would be having the next morning when she no doubt told someone.
--------
“All right everyone listen up I’m only going to say this once” came the slow drawl of the resident insomniac that was their home room teacher. “This goes double for you `1-B” followed up the growl of Vlad King the home room teacher of 1-B. Both classes had gathered into gym lamda today, it was an exact carbon copy of gym gamma where they normally would be in this period but an unruly bunch of second years with new support equipment assumed to be courtesy of one Mei Hatsume had levelled it earlier that morning and Cementoss was away on assignment meaning it would take a few days for repairs to happen.
Izuku felt and aura of serendipity at this turn of events he had wanted to speak to Kodai after their rooftop exchange a few nights ago but lacked the courage and the reason to go over to the 1-B dorms, too scared someone would dig into why he wanted to talk to the calls 1-b loner. The question of why she hadn’t said something to someone had weighed heavily on his mind when no one had approached him the previous morning.
Izuku felt a small sharp pain in his gut and looked down to see his best friend Ochako Uraraka’s elbow slowly retreating from his side. “its not like you to zone out in class, come on, we get to spar with 1-b its gonna be loads of fun” she said with fire in her eyes, after her internship with Gunhead she had quickly climbed the ranks of the best fighters in the class and had discovered a new found passion for quirkless sparing. “Dibs on fighting Itsuka” she called over to Ojiro “you got to fight her last time” she quickly added. “What about you Deku? Any one you want to figh…” she trailed off before realising her best friend had walked away.
Wordlessly Izuku had stood up and made his way over to where his sister class were sitting, most looking eager to be picked by him to spar, word had spread quickly among 1-b that if Midoriya ever wanted to train with you, say yes his insight to quirks was second to none and the three lucky members he had trained with so far had come up with new moves and ways to implement their quirks. Yui Kodai had risen to meet him wordlessly they made their way to one of the open areas of the gym and taken up a fighting stance.
Everything had come to a halt to watch the two students spar, it was as if they had choreographed their fight before hand every attack was met with a dodge or a parry no one knew what to think as their dance stretched longer and longer.
For the green haired hero student, the world had simply fallen away, there was no class there was no teacher, no students just himself and Yui Kodai. He knew, he wasn’t sure how, but he knew that Kodai understood. Maybe not the details that led him to that rooftop two nights ago but what it felt like to be sitting on that edge.
That’s all he needed, someone who would understand.
Their fight continued their eyes never breaking contact not a word being spoken. Their dance becoming more and more reckless, it had started off slow and deliberate, but it had slowly turned more and more wild, the clam precise nature of the martial arts they had been taught had slowly gone out the window. It wasn’t till Kodai manged to sweep Izuku’s leg out from under him as she tackled him to the ground did spell break over the class. The once silent gym broke out in hushed whispers as the two introverts of each class continued to stare into each other’s eyes oblivious to the risqué position it appeared they were into the rest of their classmates.
--------
Lunch that day was a silent affair, no one knew quite how to broach the subject of the events that had played out that morning. Not quite sure how she was feeling about the whole situation Ochako decided she was just going to face it head-on.
“So you and Kodai huh, Do I need to go and give her the shovel talk?” she said trying to mask the pit forming in her stomach by hiding it behind a joke, most people assumed she had a crush on her best friend. She honestly wasn’t sure if she did or not herself, but she was more upset by the fact that he was hiding things from her like a secret romance.
“Shovel talk? I don’t think I’ve ever actually spoken to Kodai, please don’t confront her about that fight she didn’t hurt me, it was just sparing” Izuku responded not looking up from his plate.
It was the first time Ochako had ever heard him say something that long without a stutter. “Hurt you?” she said adding in a fake chuckle, “I thought you two were going to start making out there for a second” her voice not quite successfully hiding the bitterness she was trying so desperately to hold back. This did not have the desired effect she had hoped.
“I’m not really that hungry” he mumbled more to himself then the table Izuku just got up, his food barely touched, and he walked away without saying another word.
“Well I fucked that one up” She said looking to her remaining table mate who just slurped his soba and shrugged.
“thanks for the help” she said to him knowing all she would receive was another shrug.
She had fucked up seriously, but she knew she wasn’t wrong either. Something was going on with Izuku and Kodai. She knew she had to make it right, but she wasn’t sure how, and she wasn’t sure why he would keep it from her. She had confided her biggest secrets to him, and he had promised to do the same to her if he needed to, she was feeling betrayed but she knew there must be a good reason he would keep this secret.
-------
That night Izuku once again made his way up to the rooftop. But this time it wasn’t the 1-A dorms rooftop but rather that of his sister class 1-B, it was late enough that everyone had headed to bed, and it was easy for him to sneak in unnoticed. It was a milder night then the one two nights ago, the air was still, and the faint sounds of the city traffic could just be heard. He spotted her near the railing she turned to see who it was when she heard the door open, a wave of relief crossing plainly over her face when she realised it wasn’t someone who was going to question her why she was up here this late at night, and of seeing him safe.
They sat wordlessly on the roof leaning against the rough concrete that made up the side wall of small alcove that housed to door back inside.
“Were you actually going to do it?” Kodai asked while wrapping her arms around one of his, there wasn’t a tone of worry or anything in her voice just simple detached curiosity.
“Probably not” he sighed, “I’ve gotten that far a few times before but that was the closest I’ve gotten since I started here”.
“Good, I’m glad you didn’t” she said gripping his arm a little tighter as she leaned on his shoulder. “Do you want to talk about it?”.
It was like a dam breaking everything had come spilling out of him, from his experiences begin quirk-less to his bullying, his mother crushing his dreams and being the world’s worst helicopter parent. His doubts at getting into U.A. , his fear of disappointing everyone, of not being worthy. By the end of it he was a sobbing mess gripping her hand like it was a lifeline.
The sun was starting to rise by the time he had finished his tale and ran out of tears. It was the most beautiful sunrise he could remember seeing.
“It’s not easy you know” came her voice. “Some days it’s harder than others, trust me I know” as she said this she slowly let go of his and peeled back the long sleeve on her forearm before pulling the sleeve back down and starting to stand.
“I’m going to have to tell a teacher about this, you know that right?” Yui asked stretching in the morning sun holding her arm out to help Izuku to his feet. “They are discreet, no one will know who doesn’t need to, but you should tell someone, a friend, probably Uraraka or Todoroki they might not understand but they will support you” she said opening the door inside and picking up a thermos that Izuku was 100% sure wasn’t there when he came out earlier that morning.
“Itsuka” she said pouring a cup of what smelled like hot chocolate and handing it to him while she sipped straight from the thermos, “she doesn’t know you were up here if you were afraid of that, otherwise there would have been a second cup” a small smile on her face like “like I said they will support you”.
