2nd of October 1978
Remus rested his hand on the worn part of the door. It felt smooth from where others had opened it too. He took a deep breath and pushed. Immediately, he was hit by a wave of chatter that nearly drowned out the music that blared seemingly coming from all around him. The moody orange lighting ooze with excitement. Thick clouds of cigarette smoke made his eyes water and the sharp smell of booze billowed from the drinks being served at the bar. There was a cluster of young people dancing by a large jukebox and every seat in the place seemed to be taken. Remus smiled broadly. Remus stepped into the building, looking around. There was a bar to the right of him, all dark wood and gold lines. An assortment of drinks and liqueurs lined the wall behind it. A woman turned and picked one of the drinks from the wall and poured it into a tall glass with sugar around the rim. The woman was on the upper end of middle-aged and her long greying hair flowed down to her mid-back, she did her job with a smile. The lighting made it hard to see the floor, but his shoes stuck to it a little and he hoped he wouldn’t drop anything down there. Ahead of him, Remus saw a figure in a booth waving at him, signalling to come over. Sirius. He headed over with certainty, then he realized he wasn't alone. With Sirius, sitting by him, was Lily and on a chair opposite was James.
“James.. Lily … wasn't expecting you two,” Remus said, shocked.
“Hi, Remus!”Lily said.
She got up and hugged him tight around his neck, beaming. Lily was wearing a green patterned blouse with a golden charm around her neck, she smelt different. A chemical smell, covered with a great deal of rose perfume. He felt her soft hair against his cheek and felt glad. When she let go he was immediately hit by another, though this one was different. A quick squeeze with a pat on the back, combined with a “Hey moony!” that was from James. He looked younger than he remembered. When they were in school it was easy to forget how young they were, surrounded by people younger than them. Now that they had left it was very clear they were still children. They both sat back down and Remus squeezed in beside Sirius. Sirius had his arm around the back of the chair. Their legs touching. Sirius opens his mouth to speak but is quickly cut off by James.
“Well... ” James is practically fizzing with excitement. “Lils and I have got a big announcement to make..”
Remus thinks he can see him wriggling in his seat.
“No James, don’t you think we should wait for Pet-” lily says quickly before James blurts out
“We’re getting married!” James shouts.
Lily looks at him. It feels like everyone in the bar has gone silent. Remus feels Sirius tense up beside him. Then Peter walks over with a tray of drinks. One with sugar around the rim. When he puts them down on the table he asks
“Who’s getting married?”
James looks at him with a huge smile on his face, Lily slowly brings her hand to show him a beautiful white diamond ring. You could see the moment Peter realised.
“Merlin's beard you two, congrats!”
