Let's Try That Again

Summary:

The second try of the 2028 Themis Legal school fair. Written for Themis week 2021!

Work Text:

Enter Myriam Scuttlebutt, Themis Legal's resident morally grey young reporter. Of course, on the long-awaited day of the school fair, or... the second one, what else would she be doing but documenting the day’s happenings. Here we are now, with Miss Scuttlebutt lugging around a comically large camera in an entirely non-stealthy manner.

She hits a few booths on her way to her real destinations, the ones run by her newfound friends. That trial was a nightmare, but one good thing did come from it. The friends Myriam had wanted so desperately to have since she transferred here, she finally did.

Once she reaches her first destination, the archery club, the first thing she does is greet one of them. Hugh O'Conner, second time defense course student. Bit of lame old man energy, if you ask her, but he's certainly got the spirit.

Shouting his name is met with a quick snap of the head in her direction, and a curt greeting. He remarks that he has his hands full with this circus act of a publicity stunt his club decided on, as he deflects a rather poorly aimed shot from assailing some bystander.

She gets him to agree to an impromptu interview, and let's face it, nobody else could. It's nothing major, just a few questions about what they're doing and why, standard stuff. that is, until one of the shitty suction cup arrows hits her directly in the forehead. judging by the snickering of the student responsible, it was certainly not an accident.

While she sets to work prying the arrow off, Hugh starts right over to the culprit. Yikes! Curse him and his not-being-afraid-to-argue-with-people. Not really, though. Myriam, not being one for conflict, haphazardly signals that she thinks she's going to move on now, thank you, and sneaks out of the booth and onto the next.

She does not manage to fully calm down by the time she reaches the art club's booth. Robin picks up on this immediately, and after finishing the sale she was making, saunters over and voices her concern. Myriam ensures her that she is definitely fine and okay actually not really but! she would be!! Robin, like any sane person, isn't buying it. Myriam spills what's bothering her, and, well, Robin isn't exactly big on conflict either.

What starts as a mutual understanding of the stress of indirectly starting an argument quickly turns into an impromptu gossip session, first about the assailant, and then about absolutely nothing related to what just happened at all. Just as Robin drops a particularly scathing line about some poor sap, one of the art club members tragically drags her back to her forgotten responsibility.

Before she fully returns to her post, she informs Myriam that Juniper is hosting a small bake sale with the rest of the counsel, and could probably use some help. Myriam commits that into her brain and starts to head over there. When she arrives, Juniper flashes her a bright smile and beckons her to hop behind the table and help out, gesturing at the rest of the members, practically buzzing with all the activity. As they peddle their pastries, Myriam thinks to herself that this day wasn't that bad, after all, with the guiding hands of her closest friends.
