That One Time When Julius Was Late

Summary:

"We're late... again," Marx said with a worried expression.

"Don't worry, Marx. I'm sure everything is just f-"

The Magic Emperor pushed both doors open hoping to greet the Captains only to be welcomed by a vast wasteland. The conference room where it once stood is replaced by a large, empty landmass with no trees or building in sight.

"W-what in the world is happening?" Marx cried at his mentor.

Notes:

I have this idea of writing shorts which involved interesting stuff that happens among the Captains whenever Julius is late. The next captain fic is just around the corner. Sit tight and enjoy this in the meantime. Avoid the end notes if you don't want to be spoiled. :)

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

"What do you think that is?" Dorothy asked Rill and Yami, the only two people interested in the thing.

"I don't think it was there last week or in any of our meetings before," Rill responded considerably.

Today, all the Captains are summoned for a conference with the Magic Emperor, with the latter nowhere to be found again. What's unusual, however, is the object placed at the center of the table.

"Do you think they're candies?" Yami asked as he dragged the thing closer to him. It made a heavy, dragging sound across the table. Nozel cleared his throat, bothered at the discomforting noise it made, but the three captains paid him no mind.

What stood now in front of Yami is a fishbowl half-filled with small, folded papers inside. Dorothy rested her chin at the edge of the table as she and Rill watched Yami fish out one of its contents, "Huh? These aren't edible." The Black Bulls Captain held it up in front of him, turning it to different angles.

"Of course they're not," Charlotte said in a sarcastic tone. Upon second look, however, she was surprised to see blotches of ink within the folds. She pointed it out to Yami, "There's something written in it."

"Really? Let's see." Yami fully unfolded the paper into its full strip. There was something written in it, alright, and whatever Yami saw made him say "Huh?" and made his forehead crease.

"What did it say?!" Rill urged him to reveal energetically. Charlotte and Dorothy watched too, intrigued by Yami's reaction.

He scratched his head, "If you can live in another squad captain's body for one day, who would it be?" He handed the paper to Charlotte, who verified its odd contents with a critical look. "Tch. What kind of question is that? Definitely not Nozel's. That hairstyle sucks."

Before the Captain of the Silver Eagles could even speak, Jack made his remark first at the weird question, "What kind of sick joke is this, huh? Why would I want to end up in another body that's weak?"

"The feeling is mutual," Nozel replied in disgust. "I cannot imagine the kind of lives the two of you lead even if it's just for one day."

"You saying something, Braidface?" Jack barked back, a fiery green aura emitting from his body.

Uninterested in the fight that's happening across the table, Yami picked another paper from the bowl. "If you have a million dollars, where will you spend i-"

"I'd use it to pay for Mr. Royal's funeral!" Jack said, still not letting go of the silver-haired royalty.

"If I have a million dollars, I'd pamper myself every day," Dorothy said on the sides, lost in a daydream, as Jack continued to bicker at Nozel.

"Yami-san! Me, me! Let me try it!" Rill clumsily jammed his hand at the bowl. He took a piece of paper out and held it up to read, "What are your pet peeves?"

"Me? I have three wild beasts in my basement," Yami answered enthusiastically at the youngest captain.

"I'm sure that's not what the question meant," Charlotte spoke while holding her head in embarrassment.

"What's that, Rosie? Decided to join the fun, huh?" Yami turned to the Blue Rose Captain with a dark look, offering her the bowl. "I dare you to answer the next one then."

Because of Charlotte's involvement, other Captains like William, Fuegoleon, and Kaiser have now taken an interest in what's happening. Left with no other choice as her respectable comrades watch, Charlotte unwillingly picked up a paper and read the question silently in her head. She continued to stare at it, a noticeable blush growing slowly on her cheeks. She turned away from Yami's direction, handing him the paper.

"What? Can't read?" Yami took the paper from her hand. "Where would you rather spend your time right now?" He turned to Charlotte again, who refused to look at him. "Well?"

Determined not to look his way for whatever reason, Charlotte still refused to answer, "T-these questions are ridiculous."

"While I agree with you on that, there must be a reason why these questions exist." Fuegoleon said in a serious manner, speaking for the first time.

"If I may add, I do find the oddity of these questions rather entertaining," William added, with his usual kind smile.

When Kaiser saw Nozel scoffed at William's remark, he decided to speak what's on his mind, "If they are really just for amusement purposes, I guess there's no harm with all of us captains participating. After all, it was prepared by Master Julius himself."

"It's decided then!" Fuegoleon exclaimed with passion, as expected from the Captain of the Crimson Lions. "Yami, I will answer the next question," he declared boldly.

"Alright, alright. There's no need to shout," Yami responded while massaging the insides of his ear. He took a piece of paper and read it out while all the captains listened intently.

"Okay, let's get this over wi- oh?!" Yami's eyes widened in shock upon seeing what's in the paper.

Everyone leaned in.

"What is it?" Fuegoleon asked in concern.

"Will you stop it with the suspense and just get on with it?" Nozel said impatiently.

Yami closed his eyes for a moment, anticipating the disaster that's to come.

"Fuego," he started.

"Yes?"

"Who do you think should be the next Magic Emperor?"

From a distance, two flying forces can be seen exchanging blows and explosions.

"I'm gonna be the next Magic Emperor!" Nozel declared while shooting arrows of spear riding atop his silver eagle. The one he's directing it to is none other than the Captain of Crimson Lion who's riding behind the fire spirit.

"Dream on, Nozel! SALAMANDER BREATH!

Notes:

This fic has two endings: 1) Charlotte Roselei drinking tea with her squad, muttering "Men are imbeciles" and 2) Jack and Yami drinking at a bar, with the former correctly predicting that Yami came up with the last question on his own.
