“When’s the last time you actually had fun on Halloween?”
The question hit Regulus hard, and he had to actually stop and think about an answer. It had been a long time, obviously considering who his parents were. Before he came to Hogwarts his parents would sometimes host silly parties filled with many dark wizards and their children, always encouraging him to “make friends” with the other kids. But once he got to Hogwarts he wasn’t forced to be around them or their parties, and instead would just be by himself, probably in the library reading or evading other students.
“I don’t think I ever have, actually.” He answered seriously, earning a dramatic gasp and feign from James.
James grabbed him by the hand, dragging him up the stairs. “That’s what I thought, and I’m going to fix that right now. You’re joining us for our party, you’re going to drink and smoke, if you want, and have a great time!” He flashed a bright grin before beckoning him through the portrait hole.
The party was already in full swing when they arrived, with pumpkins and candles floating around the room. There was a light fog over the floor, with small orbs of orange and purple floating around the ceiling. Regulus laughed, seeing the dancing skeletons in the corner, swaying on beat to the music being played.
“Here you go.” James handed him a goblet of something dark, it swirled with glitter of all different colors as he swished the glass around.
“This won’t kill me will it?” Regulus joked, taking a hesitant sip. It tasted light, like fruit and mint. There was probably alcohol in it but he couldn’t taste it, and he loved how well it matched the theme. He would never admit it, but he loved how excited James and his friends got for Halloween.
“Nah just get you right fucked up.” He flung an arm around the younger boys shoulders, pulling him into his side with an airy chuckle.
They mingled, talking to different groups of students and making their way through everyone. They specifically avoided the one corner of the common room which seemed designated for people to make out in if they weren’t Gryffindors with their own dorms just ten steps away.
“Reg! Brother I’m so glad you’re here and having fuuuuun.” The eldest Black drawled, lazily flung over his boyfriend. His hair seemed wilder than it normally was, and he was definitely drunker than Regulus had seen him in awhile.
“I’m taking him upstairs soon, he’s bloody gone.” Remus sighed heavily, placing a kiss to the other boys forehead before downing the rest of whatever was in his goblet.
Regulus wished them well before wandering off with James again. They stopped and talked to a few more people before finally settling down in a corner with just them. James was talking about something, maybe Quidditch related? Or a prank? Regulus wasn’t really paying attention if he was going to be honest. He was far too focused on James’ broad shoulders, his hair flicking out in wild angles. The way his sweater clung go his arms, and when he stretched just the slightest he could see a sliver of tanned skin, enough to make an (almost) grown man drool.
“Potter, I'm going to stop you right here, right now. I have no clue what you’ve been talking about since we got over here, but Merlin's beard, can I just kiss you already?”
James' mouth dropped in shock. He opened and closed it a few times, looking rather similar to a fish before finally getting it together. He grinned eagerly, leaning forward and catching the back of Regulus’ neck in his hand. He crashed their lips together, almost begging for more as he leaned in close, pushing Regulus against the wall. The shorter boy flicked his tongue against the other boy's lip, asking for permission. It was granted easily, both boys desperate for more contact with the other. Their hands were all over, chests, stomachs, backs, wherever they could reach. When they finally broke apart, Regulus rested his forehead against James’ shoulder, desperately sucking in air. James’ hand was resting on the small of his back now, fingers tracing shapes lightly.
“Can we do that again sometime? Like sooner rather than later?” James' voice was a rumble in his ear, and he could feel his chest move as he spoke.
“I’d love that. By the way, best Halloween ever.”
