“Kawakiii!” Hima was squirming with excitement as she made her way into the house, eager to find one of her older brothers. Kawaki let out a small, annoyed sigh. He knew the quiet in the Uzumaki household was too good to be true. (He would never admit how much he actually enjoyed the way the boisterous family filled the silence.)
Himawari pranced into the living room, happily spotting him. She was wearing a huge grin while holding something behind her back. She was practically bouncing on her feet with a mischievous glint in her eyes that Kawaki knew had something to do with whatever she was hiding behind her.
“Guess what we bought at the market today!” Kawaki didn’t bother replying. Quite frankly, he didn’t care for guessing games and he knew the younger Uzumaki would waste no time in answering her own question anyway. Himawari happily handed over a mask, one Kawaki had never seen before. It was quite plain, all white with black holes for eyes and a mouth. It perplexed him a little, what could have given Himawari the impression that he would want a mask?
Before he could voice his thoughts out loud, Hinata cut in. “Himawari, come in here so I can finish preparing your costume.” The excited child happily skipped her way towards her mother. But this only left Kawaki even more confused – a costume? Did he have to attend some ceremony or something? Is that why Himawari brought him this mask? “Whatever it is, I’m sure it’s stupid..” He mumbled to himself, already deciding that he wasn’t going to attend any lame functions no matter how hard anyone tried to convince him otherwise.
He leaned back on the sofa, happy to get back to his previous state of relaxation. Quiet times in this house were very rare and he intended to enjoy every second of it. His lids grew heavy, his breathing evened out and he felt sleep creeping up on him. He began to doze-
“YO KAWAKI!”
Fucking Boruto.
He exhaled in frustration, instantly irritated by Boruto’s presence. He looked up to see that he didn’t come alone, with Mitsuki and Sarada standing on either side of him. He was about to tell them all to leave him the hell alone so he could get back to his nap, when he froze in his tracks.
What the hell were they wearing?
Boruto was dressed in a light grey sweater vest with black pants. He had on a pair of ninja boots and a black cloak draping over his shoulders. Mitsuki was in his usual attire, but he had a snake mask covering his face, and Sarada was wearing a cloak and hat that were identical to Lord 7th’s.
Boruto beamed up at him, while striking a hand-on-hip pose that felt strangely familiar. “Well, what do you think?” Kawaki deadpanned in response, unsure of what he was seeing.
Boruto let out a whine and his shoulders sank in disappointment, while Sarada scoffed behind him. “Told you, you don’t look anything like Papa.”
“Yeah, and you don’t look anything like a Hokage-OW OW.” Boruto yelped in pain, clutching his shoulder from the punch he received.
Kawaki’s confusion began to morph into annoyance. Why the hell is Boruto dressed as Sarada’s dad? What’s with everyone and these costumes?
As if reading his mind, Mitsuki spoke up, “It’s Halloween, Kawaki. Aren’t you going to wear a costume?”
“It’s..what?”
All three members of Team 7 dropped to the floor in exasperation. “Don’t tell me you haven’t heard of Halloween! It’s the best holiday, you know!”
Sarada lightly shoved Boruto to the side and spoke, “Calm down. Not everyone celebrates the same holiday’s.” She turned her attention to Kawaki, sporting a reassuring smile. He had a hard time understanding the way she could so easily switch gears. Sarada’s presence could go from intimidating to calming in an instant, “Halloween is a holiday that we celebrate in Konoha every year. Everyone dresses up in costumes and we go door to door to trick-or-treat. Basically, we knock on the door and someone will hand out candy-“
“And if they don’t, we egg them!”
“Baka Borotu, I told you, we’re not doing that!”
Mitsuki piped up in-between the bikering friends, finishing where Sarada had left off. “Many of the Halloween traditions revolve around ghosts. People set up haunted houses and a lot of people wear ghost or monster costumes,” Kawaki glanced at the side table to his left, where he had placed the mask that Hima gave him earlier. “You don’t have to dress up as a ghost or monster though. Most people dress up as anything they want.”
Suddenly the ridiculous costumes made sense.
The three members of Team 7 all stared at Kawaki gleefully, patiently, and he realized they were awaiting a response to the traditions of their beloved holiday.
“It sounds stupid.”
Boruto, Sarada, and Mitsuki simultaneously cringed. “Well, if you want to stay at home and be boring, fine! But I already mapped out the best houses for candy and I don’t have time to waste you know!” The blonde nin shouted while making his way out the house. Mitsuki dashed behind him and Sarada slowly followed in their path.
Before closing the door, the kunoichi paused, then turned to face Kawaki. She flashed that smile once again, “I know you think it’s stupid but..it would the first holiday we all celebrate together as a team..as friends.” She made her exist and Kawaki rolled his eyes.
“Stupid.” He muttered, then he grabbed the mask from the side table and followed behind them.
