Work Text:

Piled up on the table were sweets and snacks of all kinds, bowls of punch and plates of chips, cupcakes that resemble skulls and zombie heads, pumpkin pies and apple tart. It was quite a long table of snacks, spanning just to the other side as lights flickered about on the ceiling and thin, skeletal-like hands swiped at the orange-red chips, the sound of loud crunching deafened by the melody that was playing throughout the whole tent. Just as the hands were about to scoop up another palm full of chips, complete with some eerily green colored punch, a loud crack occurred as a broom went flying down from the air.

“Agh!”

The hands spasm, drink and food going everywhere before the owner whirls around, a curse on the tip of their tongue. “Who the heck —” they cut off their sentence when their eyes catch three pairs of angry purple, blue, and ruby red narrowed right at them and sweat beads at their neck when the witch in the middle, holding her broom, lifts it up again with a loud ‘Hiyah!’

A noise of surprise slips past their lips, followed by one of equal pain, and their legs crumple until they’re on the ground, nursing their throbbing head. “Ow, ow, oooow !” They whine, fingers poking and prodding at their scalp as the witch huffed, gripping the broom tightly. She looked ready to lift it up again, as if beating up on an already dead roach (did those things even die ?) but a hand stops the broom’s descent, gently pushing it back as the boy on the floor continued mumbling in pain.

“I think he got the message, Senpai,” another voice joins the fray, quiet yet filled with anger and blue eyes scan the whining boy with a slight hint of sympathy. “Besides, hitting them any more than two times might break your broom, er, I think—do witch brooms even break?” The voice turns slightly frantic and the boy on the floor, still nursing their head, coughed in response. What a life savior, what a hero!

They peer up slightly, grinning despite the pain in their head. “Yup! They aren’t indestructible you know!” Three pairs of eyes narrow at the sound of their cheerful voice and it doesn’t take long for them to shrink away from the angry gazes, nervously poking their fingers together with a laugh. “S-so, uh, what’s the big commotion, huh? Enjoying your lives as witches or something?” The broom is lifted up again and this time, the blue eyed wizard moves to the side and lets it come down hard.

“OW!”

“Spit it out, Tsukasa-kun!”

The wizard chokes on his spit, quietly whining as a bump rises on their head. Their eyes squeeze shut from the pain and they eventually manage to stammer out a response. “Spit what out, exactly? These delicious cupcakes? No way!” An eye cracked open but when the witch raised her broom again, they panicked, holding their arms up in surrender, the lights in the tent made their blue veins all too visible to the three magic wielders standing before them, all of whom were glaring heatedly at his attempt at a joke.

“Spit it out!” The red eyed girl huffed, “you think you can just walk in here and eat our food like nothing’s wrong?! I should tell Nanamine-senpai on you!” Her finger flicked him on the forehead as they whined, now rubbing the small bruise.

Looking between the three, the boy fidgeted. “Uh… well, it is a Halloween—”

TSUKASA-KUN!”

The broom goes down again and Tsukasa shrieks, barely able to dodge it and mourning for the loss of their precious chips. Were they all that mad?! “Of course we are, you brat!” Ah, had they said that out loud too? Carefully glancing back at the angry witches, and one angry wizard, the younger of the two identical Yugi twins gave a short laugh in response. Uh oh. “You made us all into sweets and caused Senpai to get in trouble, this isn’t some stupid prank you can laugh off!” Well, they thought it could be a prank, it was Halloween after all, shouldn’t this be the spirit of the holiday?!

“Trick or treat?” Tsukasa said with a nervous glint in his eyes and when Nene raised her broom again, all too ready to smack them across their face, the wizard finally relented, waving their arms around frantically. There was no reason to get all hasty again! “Hey, heeey!! I’ll tell you, I’ll tell you! Just don’t hit me again, okay?” They watch Nene warily as she slowly lowers her broom, huffing and glaring while they fidgeted to sit down on their knees in a better position, how humiliating! “So uh, I guess you.. wanna know why uh I did what I did right? I mean of course you—”

Tsukasa—”

Gah! Okay, okay, I’m getting there !” Tsukasa stressed the words out, mouth feeling dry as they poked their fingers together. “Uh…well, uh technically you guys were the one who needed to be taught magic and uh it’s Halloween so trickery is bound to be my specialty, I mean, have you ever heard of a black cat that wasn’t playing tricks on people for Halloween? It’s my calling!” Instead of another broom hit, which Tsukasa was eternally grateful for, the wizard that had joined his witchy friends let out a noise of distress.

Both of the girls turned to him with concerned eyes but before Tsukasa could use this as a chance to escape, the wizard had already blurted out what had caused his shock. “ You were the cat that I kept feeding?!” At this, the witches whirled back to their captive, eyes wide as Tsukasa’s ears seemed to go as red as Nene’s eyes, face slowly matching that color. Unfortunately for him, that damn wizard kept talking. “I—that poor cat kept coming to my house and weaving around my legs and jumping on me whenever I walked out the door and it was you all along ?!” If it was possible, Tsukasa looked as if he had turned into a tomato of sorts—a ripe one too, judging by how beet red his face was getting. “You—!!”

“Off topic!” Before the witches, and that damn wizard, could ask him anymore embarrassing questions, Tsukasa flailed his arms as best they could. “You wanted to ask me about what I did right? Enough about my adventures to Kou-kun’s house in the middle of the night!” Okay, so maybe saying it like that didn’t sound too good either as all three of his friends stared at him oddly, brows furrowed while thinking the same thing.

Why was Tsukasa going to Kou’s house anyways?

Nene couldn’t help but think something was going on with the two, looking back and forth between them while Tsukasa avoided both her and Kou’s gazes, Aoi didn’t seem too phased by the thought but even she was wondering if Tsukasa had some sort of motive and the final person—well, the very person involved in such a mess was too busy hiding his face in his hands to think of anything else. Did getting licked on the face count as a kiss when it was from a shape shifting wizard cat?! “Gaaah!! Stop thinking about it, stop that!” Fortunately for him, Tsukasa had jumped up, waving and flailing their arms and disrupting everyone’s thought bubbles. What a useless spell!

“A-anyways—!!” The wizard coughed tremendously, failing at hiding the embarrassment plastered all over their face. How did Amane deal with this? “It was just a bit of fun, you all got the spell right anyways so shouldn’t you be happy too? It wore off tonight anyways, a double win!” They almost squeal when Nene raises her broom again, slamming it down on the ground and glaring at them with a hand on her hip and her mouth twisted into a scowl.

It would have been adorable, she looked cute when she was all angry like that, if not for the fact that the witch was capable of knocking them unconscious. “Turning our friends into sweets was not fun at all! Do you know how many—” Nene doesn’t even get to finish her sentence when she opens her eyes again and sees a vacant spot where Tsukasa had once resided. “Hah?! Where did he go?! Don’t tell me he escaped!” She looked livid at the thought, looking around as Kou looked towards the corner grimacing at the sight.

“Actually, Senpai—” he tapped her shoulder, pointing towards the hunched over figure that was growing mushrooms all around themselves—even on top of their head. “—he’s uh right here and uh, he’s—”

“Sulking?”

Both witches spoke in unison, blinking rapidly as Tsukasa mumbled to himself, eyes as dark as the night sky itself. “ Not fun she said, it wasn’t fun at all!” All three of the friends could only stare as the youngest of the trio dejectedly poked and prodded at a mushroom with a hanging head. “ It’s Halloween, it’s supposed to be trick or treat and I messed it all up, aah, wasn’t it fun for you, Mr.mushroom?” Nene felt a bead of sweat run down her neck, as did both of her magical companions, and looking between the two, she gently inched forward, poking the wizard with her broom.

He slumped towards the floor, grasping onto Kou’s pants leg and pouting. “I can’t believe this, not fun at all she said…” Kou felt himself sweat, gently patting his head while he mourned. Who knew black cats loved mischief so much?

“Ah… there’s no need to feel so sad, I’m sure someone must have liked it!”

Tsukasa beams at the thought, eyes wide and looking all too excited. “Really? Really? Did you?!” Kou stiffens, pulling his hand away as he looked elsewhere and that was enough for the poor wizard to look dejected all over again. “You hated it too?! So now you were just lying!” Bonelessly, Tsukasa flops to the floor, face squished against the grass as his grumbles are muffled. Kou couldn’t help but look towards the apprentice witches for help, the wizard was still holding onto his leg after all.

“Ah, Tsukasa-kun,” Nene carefully approached, gripping her wand as a single amber eye peeked over at her, “I’m sorry for getting so mad but you shouldn’t be tricking us like that y’know! We were really worried for everyone!” The light scolding makes Tsukasa roll onto his back, staring up at them as he exhales and blinks a couple of times.

Nene, despite her fear, continued onwards. “I know that this was probably your way of doing Halloween and it’s all in good fun but please, next time, don’t put the lives of our friends at risk, what if their sweet had gotten smashed?” That seemed to make the wizard blanche, clearly not having thought his little prank through as he sat up, stumbling to his feet with a whining apology at the tip of his tongue.

“Whaa?! I wouldn’t want that to happen! That sounds like a horror film!” Everyone tried to think of such a film existing, thought bubbles appearing in air above their heads but they were immediately dispersed as they all shook their heads, shivering at the thought. Even something as funny as candy people could be so scary to witness, huh? “Sorry, I’m sorry, I’ll think of better pranks next time!” The cat bows with their hands (or should it be called paws?) clasped together, witch hat bouncing around.

Next time?

Before anyone could question the mischievous cat on his words, they were already clinging to Kou, wrapped around his arm like a vice. “But eeeeh, now that Kou-kun’s a witch…” the wizard looked down at him ludicrously, ears slightly pink as he realized who he was. That stupid cat hadn’t been spying on him had he? “ I have something—”

A yelp cut off their words and Kou jumps as the boy is lifted in the air, looking up above to see the witch that had been explaining things to him hours prior. “Nanamine-senpai!” Nene and Aoi exclaimed as the witch clad in purple held up a very sheepish looking wizard by the collar of his uniform shirt. Her eyes were dull, staring at him with lips slightly descended into a frown and Tsukasa, for all he’s worth, could only gulp in response.

“So it was you after all…” she quirked an eyebrow and gazed at the three friends that were now in her care. “My apologies that he caused such a mess before the party, even if things were resolved so quickly, there’s one problem that’s unable to be fixed.” At that, her gaze lands on Kou who holds his head up high and tries not to let the stare of three witches burn into his head.

“I’ll do my best as a wizard, Ma’am!” Was this why Nene and Aoi were always so secretive? Could he even count on himself to keep his identity under wraps? His brows furrowed at the thought but the perfectly manicured hand grasping his own makes him relax if just a tiny bit. Nene is smiling, a determined glint in her ruby eyes.

Sakura seemed impressed, nodding as she gazed back to the culprit of this entire mess. “As for you…” She looked with a sigh, broom already taking her and Tsukasa out of the Halloween decorated tent. “Perhaps cleaning the catacombs will teach you a lesson or two, and confiscating all your magical belongings, of course.” The student let out a noise of surprise, squawking as he was taken out of the party by sheer force.

“Eeeh?! Sakura-chaaaan!! You can’t take away my books and my wand and my hat and—”

A simple wave of her hand makes his mouth clamp shut and the three friends could only watch as their mentor dragged the black cat away. It was a pitiful sight to behold though they supposed the cat did have it coming to them after all—messing with the apprentice witches in such a way. “Aaah… well I’m glad he’s facing consequences in the end but…” Nene couldn’t help but frown, tapping a finger on her chin as Kou and Aoi looked over.

“But?”

They were really getting used to being in sync, weren’t they? Jumping at the unison of voices, Nene laughed nervously when her friends gave her a concerned look, rubbing the back of her head. “Ah well, we know that Tsukasa is a black cat wizard but then…” she trailed off for a moment, slightly gulping as she did so.

What does that make Amane-kun ?”

-

Shining brightly in the air, the moon seems far out of his reach even with the telescope positioned on top of the school roof. He peers into it, watching the stars twinkle while sitting cross legged on the floor. It’s almost relaxing until he catches sight of something flying in the air.

It’s a broom of sorts, hoisting an older girl and a cat curled up on her lap. His eyes narrowed at the sight before he stands up to his feet, making a makeshift camera with his hands and closing one eye to get a better view.

“You’re so much trouble,” the boy mumbled as the broom began to disappear amongst the trees on the other side of the school. “Maybe I’ll visit you later if she allows it…” he sticks his hands into his pockets after pocketing his telescope, slinging the bag over his shoulder and beginning to walk down the rooftop stairs.

What a mischievous familiar he had acquired.

Notes:

Tsukasa is really a mischievous person, huh?
