Work Text:
Warm light filtered through the large windows on a Saturday morning. Y/n sat in the class 1-b common room reading the next chapter of a book required for class while some of her classmates continued a game of Risk that had been going on and off for about two weeks. She was one of the first ones out and was dictated to referee for the rest of the game. Rarely was there ever an issue causing her to not have to put full attention into the game. It had been three weeks since the U.A. Sports Festival and Y/n’s 1st place win. She still didn’t quite believe she was able to beat Katsuki Bakugo, but she had.
Y/n feels the back of the couch dip and a head being placed on her shoulder. Looking to her right, she sees Itsuka Kendo smiling brightly at her.
“Hello, Itsuka. Is there something I can help you with?” Y/n starts, closing her book while placing a bookmark in it.
“Yeah! I accidentally got delivered a package to my room with your name on it. It feels hefty and I want to know what it is.” She says brightly while standing and hoisting a box she had behind her back.
This pulled the attention of the others, pausing their game to watch Y/n open the box. Placing the box in her lap, she sees it’s addressed from her mother. A large smile spreads across her face as she rips the tape. Y/n knew exactly what the package was; she had asked her mom to send them when she realized she had forgotten to pack them after her last visit home. Pulling out the packing paper, a pair of lemon yellow quad skates with pink caps, and safety pads are revealed. Peeking deeper, she noticed her mother also packed some of her skating clothes, but didn’t need everyone to see those.
“They’re my skates! I’m relieved they got here unharmed.” Y/n beams, pulling out the right skate and holding it up for her classmates to see.
“I didn’t know you knew how to skate, Y/n! You should have said something sooner, we could have been going to the skating rink this whole time!” Yosetsu Awase spoke up from the other side of the coffee table.
“Oh, I don’t usually skate at skating rinks, usually in parking lots and down sidewalks,” Y/n hums out, paying more attention to her skates and how admiring how the yellow catch the midday light. Maybe she’ll go for a ride later in the day, she thought.
“Well… Let’s see them on!” Tetsutetsu barks out with excitement.
Placing the box between her and where Itsuka now sat, Y/n pulls out the other skate before sliding them over her socks. After pulling the pale blue laces tight, she stands up, wobbling slightly before tromping towards the wood flooring. She glides around the kitchen island before stopping in front of her friends again.
“How fast do you think you can go on those?” Tetsutetsu asks.
Y/n notices Itsuka digging deeper into the box, but ignores it to answer Tetsutetsu, “I’ve no idea. I never did the math. It was always just a hobby.”
Itsuka’s head quirks to the side as she pulls out a pair of white short-shorts. “Looks like your mom sent some clothes too?”
Y/n’s face flushes slightly before speaking, “Yeah, you gotta look the part if you’re going to skate down the Santa Monica Pier.” She wobbles over to Itsuka before taking the shorts and grabbing the box. “Itsuka can referee, I’m going to take my stuff up to my room.”

Y/n planned she would skate down the reservoir near the school after lunch, planning on wearing sweats over her outfit until she knew she would be out of sight of her classmates. Once close to the pier and finding a bench, Y/n slips off her sweats; revealing her black shorts and a light blue cropped sweatshirt, and knee length gym style socks. She shoved her sweats and sandals into her bag before putting on her skates. There were a few people also walking the reservoir but not many; mostly older couples.
Putting in her earbuds, Y/n puts on her workout playlists before slinging her bag over her shoulder and starting to skate up and down the walking path. She was sure to not run into anyone, only doing tricks when no one was close.
After skating for a while, Y/n spots a food cart serving ice cream. A few calories couldn’t hurt since she was working out, right? Y/n thought to herself.

Kirishima had convinced Bakugo to go out on their day off from training to try out a new ice cream cart near the reservoir with the promise that he would pay. What Bakugo hadn’t accounted for was that Kirishima would invite others from their class with them. Kaminari and Ashido had been yapping the whole walk there and it took everything in Bakugo to not tell them to shut it.
As they finally near the cart and get in line, they all notice the girl that had to be their age on roller skates and fairly revealing clothing in front of them with her face turned away from them.

It was finally Y/n’s turn to order and she pauses her music so she can talk to the stale worker. Once she had her cookie dough ice cream cone in hand, she turned to leave, making direct eye contact with Katsuki Bakugo. Because of her skates, she was now at eye level with the boy. Frozen in place, she couldn’t move. They weren’t supposed to be here, she thought, no one usually comes this way from the campus.
“Y/l/n!? Hi! You look so cute! What did you get?” Ashido spoke cheerfully, not seeming to be fazed by how Y/n was dressed.
“I- uh- cookie dough.” Y/n stutters out, looking at the pink girl.
“Oh, cookie dough is great! I was thinking of getting strawberry.” Ashido continues to smile at her.
“You’re blocking the line,” Bakugo spits out towards Y/n.
Without a word, Y/n slides to the side, then quickly down the concrete path, like they were allergic to the eyes of her classmates boring into her body. She looks over her shoulder briefly back at the group.

“Way to go, Bakubro. You scared her off.” Kirishima sighs, stepping up to the cart window and ordering.
Humph is the only sound Bakugo makes as he looks over his shoulder, watching Y/n skate away. He sees her look back over her shoulder and hold eye contact with him. He watches as she then trips over a bump and falls forward to the ground and onto her hands and knees. Ashido seems to notice as well cause she yelps and runs towards Y/n. Bakugo watches Ashido help Y/n stand up and can see their talking but can’t hear them. He also notices she dropped her ice cream in the fall.
He finally turns around, satisfied she’s taken care of, and orders his ice cream. Kaminari orders his own and Ashido’s ice cream, he and Kirishima head towards the two girls. Bakugo turns back to the cart worker and also orders a cookie dough cone and pays for it himself. He then starts towards the group.

Y/n feels a jerk and turns to see the ground quickly approaching her, or more like her approaching it. She should have watched where she was going, she thinks as she falls. Once she lands on her knees, glad she decided to wear her pads, she rolls onto her butt. Ashido is suddenly in front of her, offering a hand.
“Omg, Y/n! Are you okay? You really took a tumble.” Ashido’s face was covered with concern.
Y/n smiles up at her, taking her hand and hoisting herself up onto her feet. “Yeah, I’m okay. I’ve taken much harder falls than this. Thank you.”
Ashido helps her skate over to a bench and the two girls sit down. That’s when Kaminari and Kirishima show up, ice cream in hand and handing one to Ashido. Ashido’s face falls and looks back to where Y/n fell.
“You dropped your ice cream, Y/n,” Ashido says sadly.
“Oh, it’s okay. That’s probably just the universe’s way of saying I don’t need it.” Y/n laughs out softly, stretching her arms above her head.
As she finishes her sentence, Bakugo walks up to the group. He walks in front of Y/n and holds out a cone without a word. Y/n looks at Bakugo then his hand and reaches out, her fingers brushing his as she takes the cone. She swears she sees him shiver at the touch.
“Oh, thank you,” she looks at the cone in her hands and speaks quietly.
“Yeah, whatever,” Bakugo replies, turning around, looking towards the water.
“Wow, I didn’t even see you fall. Ashido is really observant.” Kirishima laughs out.
“Well, you have to be if you want to be the very best!” Ashido smile and proclaims proudly.
“Thanks again, Ashido. I should probably be going though.” Y/n stands up and skates backward slightly and waves. “I’ll see you guys back on campus.”
“Wait, Y/n! I wanted to ask you for your number! I have a few of the other class 1-b girl’s numbers and we sometimes go out together! I wanted to be able to invite you next time.” Ashido calls out, pulling out her phone and running up to Y/n.
“Oh, you want to invite me to hang out? Sure.” Y/n smiles, taking her phone and putting her name and number into it.
“You guys are hanging out without us?” Kaminari pouts.
The two girls giggle at his puppy eyes. “Maybe if you are good, we’ll invite you too.” Y/n chuckles out, looking to Ashido. “You can share my number with whoever wants it in your class.”
Bakugo was still avoiding looking towards Y/n again, instead turning to face Kirishima so he didn’t have his back to everyone. With a final wave, Y/n skates away from the group and into a backroom the was the dirt off of her hands the best she could with an ice cream in her hands. Why did he buy you a new ice cream? She thought he thought she was fat? They hadn’t spoken since the last round of the festival. Which she was grateful for. He had used her powers on him again then. For some reason, she felt bad doing it, like it was cheating to not even let him get a hit off before taking him over. The truth was, she was scared he’d take the opportunity to hurt her for embarrassing her earlier that day.

Once Y/n was gone, Bakugo turns back towards the others. They decided that was enough excitement for their day off and to head back towards campus, taking the long way.
“Who wants her number?” Ashido asks everyone who was sitting in class 1-a’s common room in their dorms.
All the girls raise their hands, taking out their phones, waiting for Ashido to read off the number. Bakugo listened in as Ashido read off the number, saving it into his phone as ‘Bubblegum Bitch’ before disappearing into his room without being noticed.
Once in his room, his phone rings the default ton and he sees his mom’s face appearing on his phone. He answers it with a large sigh. “Hi, mom.”
“Katsuki! Took you long enough to pick up, I’ve been trying to call you all day! What could have possibly been more important?!” His mom yelled through the phone causing him to pull it away from his ear.
“I was at the park with some friends trying out a new ice cream cart,” he starts, falling onto his bed. “What’s up?”
“I just wanted to check-in. How are classes? Have you talked to that girl who beat you at the sports festival? You should keep her close, she seems smart.”
Bakugo groans at his mom’s mention on Y/l/n. She brought her up every time she called. Maybe knowing she was there today will get her off his back.
“She was there today. We hung out for a bit.” Sure it wasn’t really the truth, but his mom wouldn’t know any better.
“Oh, really? Ice cream with a girl? Is there something going on between you?” Bakugo’s face flushes red. Of course, she’d twist it that way.
“No, me, Kirishima, Kaminari, and Ashido ran into her there. She was working out and was taking a break when we ran into her.” Bakougo rushes out defensively.
“Yeaaah, sure that’s what happened, Katsuki.” He could hear his mom’s mischievous smile in her words.
“Bye, mom,” Bakugo says, hanging up the phone.
The last thing he hears is his mom calling out, “you better not hang up on me, Katsuki!”
