Chapter Text
James Potter had finally married the love of his life, Lily Evans, well, Lily Potter now of course. He couldn’t quite believe that after all those years, all the name calling, all the rejections, he could finally say she was his. But not even a week after the honeymoon, a new mission came in, one that would separate them for Merlin knows how long.
Everything seemed perfect since the wedding, they had bought a house together in London, and had remodelled it. They had had a makeshift honeymoon in there, transforming the place into a tropical resort and saying they’d go to the real one when it was safe. Them nor their friends had any assignments, and they could all relish in the peace during the war. Since getting this new assignment though, James had made it clear how much he didn’t want to leave Lily, at least Sirius was coming with him though, they’d have each other for company in the time the mission would last for.
James was standing in the now back-to-normal living room in the house and Lily was rambling about how she will be fine and how she’ll still have Marlene, Dorcas, Mary, Peter and Remus, but James couldn’t focus on her words, all he could focus on was her. The way her green eyes perfectly shined like emeralds in any light, how her red hair perfectly fell over one shoulder in loose, bouncy curls, her pale skin contrasting against her plump, rosey cheeks. James noticed the silence indicating the end of Lily’s mini speech.
“I don’t want to leave you.” He said on the verge of tears.
“You won’t be leaving me, Potter, you never truly will ever again.” She reassured him.
“We’ve barely had any time together since we left Hogwarts because of this war and who knows when I’ll get back.”
“James, we are fighting this war so we can spend the rest of our lives with each other. A few months is going to be a blip in all that time.”
“But what if it’s more than a few months, Evans, what if it’s years?”
“It’s Potter now.” She joked, flashing her ring, “and so what if it’s a year, two, three, more, whatever! The longer we are apart, the more meaningful our reunion will be.”
James sat down on the sofa, hands running through his mop of hair.
“I don’t want to spend another minute without you though.”
“You won’t be without me.” She said, sitting next to him, fiddling with his hair the way she had for years.
“Lils, didn’t you hear Moody? I have to go away on this spy mission to-“
“I was there James, I know what he said.” Lily interjected rather impatiently, she’d heard this so many times.
“Then why are you acting so casual about all of this?”
Lily had a mischievous smirk growing on her face.
“Close your eyes.” She whispered.
“I’m really not in a joking mood right now, my love.”
“I’m not joking. Close your eyes.”
James did so reluctantly, cautious as to what his wife had planned. He felt the sofa cushion move as Lily stood up and walked away.
“I’m right here.” She said softly, “Even though you can’t see me, I am with you, and I will always be with you. No matter how far apart we are, how long we are separated for, and you can always see me. In here,” she patted his head, then proceeded to move her hand over his chest, “and especially in here. We are connected to each other, and we always will be.” She pressed her forehead against his, and they shared a long, silent, intimate moment. The gravity of Lily’s words caused a tear to roll down James’ face.
“How come you always know exactly what to say?” James said, opening his eyes, smiling at his incredible wife.
“I’m only saying because of how much I love you.”
“I love you too.”
Both were slightly tearful as they knew their goodbyes were just hours away. The assignment came in on Monday, James and Sirius having to leave early Friday morning. It was Thursday night.
James kissed Lily, showing her all the love he had for her in a single action. Lily placed a finger on James’ lips before he could take it further, and with another mischievous smile on her face, she stood up and walked to the record player and dropped the needle. Lily had it placed on a specific record, the song that their first dance was to.
“Love of my life, you’ve hurt me. You’ve broken my heart, and now you leave me. Love of my life, can’t you see? Bring it back, bring it back. Don’t take it away from me because you don’t know what it means to me.” The sweet vocals of Freddie Mercury caused a small chuckle to escape James as he walked over to Lily’s outstretched arms.
The two held each other close, Lily was nuzzled into James’ chest, the familiar sound of his heartbeat comforting her, and James was resting his head on top of Lily’s, memorising the soft, silky feel of her hair, and the strong floral scent of her shampoo. The world around melted away as Mr. Mercury serenaded them. It was them against the world, and they felt like they could always win. The moment came to an abrupt end when the record scratched, indicating the end of the song.
As they separated and looked into each other’s eyes, the two felt an instant desire in them as they softly kissed one another, but the kisses became quicker, an urgent need behind each one as they felt the urge to spend this night witheach other, appreciating each other because as much either didn’t want to admit it, it might very well be the last night they have with each other.
They just wanted to be with each other that night, and that is what they did.
