the voice that came from you and me

Summary:

The two of them might be separated by half a world of distance, still. But it doesn't seem quite so far these days.

Prompt #31: Hurt & Comfort | trauma + prisoner

Work Text:

She goes back to Norway after the whole…fiasco. There is still the hope that she can help stitch that other family back together – she’s got one cobbled back into something resembling a whole, disordered and messy as it is, maybe she can do it again – but for the moment she wants to tread at the surface, just for a while. Take a breath of the fresh air.

She finds a tiny apartment in a small town, above one of the shops now selling buckets of candy and ghoulish decorations. She likes the little home. For however long she has it.

Yelena calls on Halloween.

“How did you get this number?” Natasha asks, pausing The Shining and kicking her feet up on the coffee table. She doesn’t really expect an answer.

“Do you ever wonder if—” Yelena’s voice is very, very quiet on the other end. “If they’re still…in your head?”

Natasha picks at a thread on the sofa cushion. “What they did to you is different than what they did to me.” Yelena waits. “They always will be,” Natasha finally murmurs. “But that doesn’t mean they have to win.”

They stay on the phone until the movie’s over.
