Work Text:

“I will ask you one more time, where is he? The Dark Lord.” Bellatrix said pointing her wand at Alice.

“Yes, where is he.” A second death eater who Alice recognized as Rodolphus Lestrange asked.

Alice shuffled her feet before looking Bellatrix in the eyes, “We don’t know where he is, all we know is that he disappeared after killing the Potter’s.”

“Yes, we have no idea where he could be.” Frank, her husband echoed. It was true Alice and Frank had no idea where he was or what had happened to him.

“Liar!” Bellatrix shrieked. She aimed her wand at the two before uttering the curse, “Crucio.” Alice could hear the chill in her voice before searing pain took over her body. She was able to turn her head just enough to see her husband collapse to the ground seconds before she did.

Through the pain, she was able to remember all of the important things that had happened to her in life.

“Fortescue, Alice.” Professor McGonagall called.

Alice bounded up to the stool sitting down so that she could be sorted. The hat was promptly placed on her head when she heard a voice, “Hmmm, very loyal I see. Hufflepuff may not be a bad choice. Wait no, I see bravery and kindness but I also see ambition. Hmmm better be, Gryffindor!” The hat shouted the last word.

She quickly got up to go to the Gryffindor table smiling at the older kids when she passed them.

Alice remembers one thing in particular about that night, she went to bed happy, safe, and excited. That night she found her second family.

“Alice!” Alice recognized Frank's voice immediately,

“Hey, Frank! How’s it going?” She responded with a smile.

“Err I just wanted to ask you something. Do you think that we can go down to the lake?” Frank looked at his feet.

“Yeah of course! I’m assuming you have something to ask me at the Lake?” She answered as they walked through the exit of the castle.

“Yeah…” Frank trailed off as they started approaching the lake.

Frank cleared his throat before smiling, “Alice? I know that we’re friends and all so if you say no I hope we can still be friends. Will you go on a date with me? Hogsmeade this weekend?” Frank bit his lip nervously waiting for her response.

Alice was shocked, she liked Frank but never in a million years did she think that she had a chance with him, sure he wasn’t the best looking guy ever but he sure was sweet. “How about the library tonight and Hogsmeade this weekend?” She replied watching Franks face light up, Merlin he was adorable.

“What if he leaves me at the altar?” Alice worried as Dorcas finished fixing the flowers on her dress.

“Then you will see my face on the paper and I'll be locked in Azkaban.” Dorcas said, “He won’t though. He loves you, you love him.”

“Thank you.”

‘“For what?”

“Everything. Being here.”

About half an hour later Alice smiled at Frank, who was no longer holding the title of boyfriend, or fiance. No, he had the title of her husband.

Alice held her baby in her arms gently bouncing him to sleep, “What should we call him?” Frank asked.

“Neville,” Alice answered without thinking. He looks like a Neville.

“I love it.”

That was the day she found out it’s possible to love a child more than life itself.

Just like that the world dimmed. She wasn’t dead but she didn’t recognize anything around her. She was trapped, trapped inside her head. Now only able to access memory fragments instead of the whole memory. She couldn’t talk, she couldn’t scream for help. She couldn’t show anyone she understood this or even knew what was going on, but she knew she would be living in Saint Mungos for the rest of her life.
