if you had life eternal

Summary:

Korra was gone.

And Asami wanted to be too.

Work Text:

It was only a matter of time before it happened. But no one expected it to happen so soon.

Asami was with Korra. She saw, how the love of her life slipped away, through the border of the living world to the world of the dead. It was unreal. She didn't believe it at first, that this was just some prank Korra and Bolin had pulled off.

But it wasn't a prank.

There Korra was, lying on the ground, on her side. A pool of blood beneath her. How does one even lose that much blood?

She wanted to scream. She wanted to drop to her knees and let all of the feelings free. She wanted to cry. She wanted to hold Korra's cold body, just to try if making it warmer could bring her back. She wanted to leave. She wanted to die.

But she couldn't. She had to stay strong. So she walked up to Korra's body, kneeled and toucher her body. It was already cold. She couldn't look at her face. No. Slowly, she removed her jacket and placed it over Korra's face, to give her privacy. Do dead people even care about pricacy? She did it anyway. She closed her eyes and let the tears fall down her cheeks. She inhaled deeply and held her breath for a second. Then another, then she let go.

She wanted to curl beside Korra's body and just lie there, under the grey sky and let the rain wash everything away. All of the dirt, the blood. Everything.

Korra's funeral wasn't public. It was a small ceremony and Asami wasn't there. She couldn't bring herself to it. To meet all of the people and talk about how sad it was to lose Korra. She knew what it felt like to lose Korra, and she didn't want to hear how others felt. They didn't know Korra like she did.

The hardest thing was to face Korra's parents. She didn't want to face them. She wanted to avoid them. What was she supposed to say to them? That she was sorry for not being able to save their daughter? That she loved Korra too? That she had wished Korra and Bolin were just joking around? She didn't know. She didn't know.

She had cried in front of them. They had embraced her.

She knew she had to start looking for the new Avatar. She didn't want to. She didn't want a new Avatar. She wanted Korra. She wanted Korra to be here with her.

If only they had had eternal lives, to live an eternity together.

If only.
