Work Text:

Barry looked over Dundee, who was quiet as he drove their boosted car smoothly around the curve in the road. They’d gotten away cleanly from the cops and were headed into the city to repair and drop the vehicle off. Dundee was finally wearing one of his eye-searing bright pink outfits again and it filled Barry with a sense of relief not to see him in all-black anymore. Things had been difficult recently for the club, and Dee had taken on both the blame and responsibility for fixing everything. Barry knew it weighed on him and he'd grown concerned when he'd seen Dee pushing himself so hard. There had been one too many sleepless nights recently.

Today was one of the first days in a long time that they'd been able to just relax and have a chill day together. It almost felt like old times. Just the two of them hanging out and driving, with a light police chase here or there. Barry felt hopeful. Maybe things were finally getting back to normal.

He started humming, and after a moment realized what the tune was. “Can you feel the love tonight…” he sang softly.

He glanced over at Dundee again in time to see the sun peek over the mountains, taking one last look before sinking beneath the horizon. The final golden-orange rays of the evening lit up a pink sky filled with fluffy clouds. It made a picture-perfect image and Barry felt his heart swell at the sight.

“Aw, wow! Look at that sunset to your left, Dee.”

Dundee looked briefly, never quite taking his eyes off of the road. “Damn, that’s as good looking as your asshole,” he joked with a drawl.

“Hey- ok.” Barry said, taken aback. Maybe this wasn’t the right time to try and be romantic. Then Dundee glanced over again and his voice softened.

“Oh!” He was really looking at the sunset now. “And then the mountain blocking it as well...that’s actually kinda cool.”

Dundee’s face lit up in a grin as he gazed out the window at the sky, his profile illuminated in the warm gaze of the setting sun. No, Dee wasn’t what anyone would call handsome, what with his scarred face, weathered skin, and raggedy haircut, but to Barry in that moment, he was beautiful.

“Yeah, it’s very cinematic,” he said, reaching out to cover Dundee’s hand, which was resting on the gear shift, with his own. Dundee, still smiling, turned and met Barry’s eyes. His gaze softened as he looked over his husband.

I love you, Dundee mouthed to him.

Barry mouthed something back that looked like I love you. Elephant shoes.

Dundee just shook his head and rolled his eyes fondly. Barry smirked. This was one of his favorite games to play, so Dundee knew exactly what to expect. What Dee didn’t know is that Barry had stopped using “elephant shoes” as a substitute a long time ago.

“Yeah, it’s just on the left, where we’re repairing the car,” Barry said out loud, clearing his throat. They entered a forested stretch of the highway and he started humming again, a different song this time.

He watched out of the corner of his eyes as Dundee released his hand from the gear shift, turning it over and sliding it into Barry's hand. Barry interlaced their fingers together, and Dundee ran his thumb over the side of Barry's knuckle. Barry gave his hand a gentle squeeze in return. Then he started singing again.

“What a wonderful phrase...It means no worries, for the rest of your days…”

Yeah, everything was finally getting back to normal.
