“I don’t know, Shroom…” Dark Choco mumbled. He knelt by the young one fixing up their costume.Poison Mushroom Cookie had swapped out their usual purple robes for red and white ones, and a cap that was red with yellow spots. They held an orange bag meant for candy and asked Dark Choco if they wanted to come with them.
“Wouldn’t you rather go with your friends?”
But Poison Mushroom looked up at him excitedly and said, “But I want my big brother to come along too!”
That comment made Dark Choco cry on the inside. Maybe crying wasn’t the right word… Bawl. He was bawling on the inside when Mushroom had called him their brother. But on the outside he gave the child a warm smile and said, “Okay. Let me get ready.”
The little one cheered as he headed to his room, wondering what costume to wear.
He dug through his closet trying to find something. There he found an old tattered cape, similar to the one he always wears, and some bandages.
Maybe a soldier from battle? He thought. It didn’t sound creative, but it was better than nothing. But it didn’t seem like enough, so he returned to the closet in search of a fabulous outfit.
Then he found a cracked chest plate, just like the one he wore back then. Back when he was still a prince with honor in his heart. He held it as if it would break any second, tracing the cracks.
The thing brought back memories of his past. How he traveled far and wide to find those in need of his help. How he took that stupid sword. How he betrayed the ones he loved. How he-
He sighed. This was no time to dwell on how much he hated what he did. His little sibling wanted to go trick or treating and he doubted being moody would do any good.
Yet it felt good to have it near. Maybe having it with him would be nice.
“Nice costume!” A cookie said as they handed the children candy. Dark Choco followed Poison Mushroom and their friends as they went from house to house.
He had gotten a few compliments on his own costume. But the bandages were starting to feel itchy and he was starting to think that the chest plate was a bad idea. Especially when he saw Milk Cookie’s look of shock on his face.
He sighed and shook his head, trying to think positively.
At least Shroom seemed to enjoy themselves. They happily chatted with their friends, Onion cookie and Cherry cookie. Each one showing off all the goods they had received and trading with one another.
They had made it to where the Halloween festivities were being held, many cookies dressed nicely for the costume contest. Others danced the night away.
The children went to dance and Dark Choco stood by the sidelines, enjoying a small treat.
“Your costume is very scary.” A small voice said beside him in a confident manner. He turned to see a little cookie with short orange hair, black long sleeve shirt with poofy shoulder pads, and a fluffy orange skirt.
“Oh thank you little one…” he said. It was meant to be a compliment, but “being scary” was something that he felt like he could be too easily. Even now cookies would look over to him cautiously.
“What’s wrong? Do you not like parties?” She asked.
“No. I’m mostly here for my younger sibling.” He gestured to Shroom, and grinned when they seemed to be having fun dancing with their friends. “That’s nice. You seem to be a good big brother. But what do you like to do? I love my pretty dresses, and my best friend Pompom.” The child gestured to a cookie in a big pumpkin costume.
Impressive. That’ll win first place for sure.
“Well…” What did he like?
“I enjoy calming things. Classical music. Maybe a good book. And this special place I go… in the forest. To think.” It felt nice to think of these things. He hasn’t been to that spot in a while though, maybe he should visit it sometime.
“Choco! Come dance!” Shroom called out from the dance floor.
“I should go join them.” He told the little one.
She nodded, “Enjoy the party, Dark Choco cookie.” And he left to join his young sibling in the festivities. Not realizing he didn’t tell the cookie his name as she waved goodbye.
