Happy Birthday Diavolo

Work Text:

Let’s see, the decorations are all in order, check. You checked with Barbatos and the rooms are set up for tonight’s special surprise, check. Here in front of you is the beautiful cake Luke finished, check.

“Everything seems to be in order,” you think out loud as you leave the kitchen and enter the main ballroom. “Barbatos should be bringing Diavolo now and then we can get this party started.”

You look over to everyone over to the side of the room handing Asmo wrapped boxes and bags. That’s right, Asmo is in charge of making the gifts table look nice. Presents, chec-

You feel your heart sink. Presents? You forgot to get Diavolo a present! How in the three worlds did you forget to get a present for the prince? Sure Lucifer had set up a gift from everyone and you got him a card and put one of those cute “Any Date” coupons in it, but you had also fully intended on getting him a full proper gift. What happened to that? You really felt like you could cry right then and there, but you can’t!

I can’t upset everyone over my own mistake. This is Diavolo’s day and it would be horrible if everyone was focused on me right now. I’ll just have to promise to get him something proper tomorrow, you thought, trying to ease your own mind.

As Diavolo entered the room guided by Barbatos you did your best to put the negative thoughts out of your mind and smile. Everyone truly had a great time, laughing and dancing, the special demonus was poured, a grand dinner was served, and Luke’s special cake was a delight. You managed to genuinely enjoy the party, but the thought of your mistake did linger in the back of your mind.

As it got late, one of the few things left to do was give gifts. You really expected him to have the presents taken to a room where he would open them in private later, but it seemed everyone was much too excited to see him open their gifts to let him get away with that. If you were being completely honest though, seeing Diavolo participate in the public gift opening tradition that was usually only seen in children’s birthday parties, didn’t actually surprise you that much. It did leave you feeling a little jealous of everyone who got to watch Diavolo’s delighted face as he unwrapped their heartfelt gifts.

Levi was the last to give Diavolo a physical gift and you felt your jealousy melt away. You were genuinely happy to see Levi’s face light up when Diavolo accepted his gift. Levi had worked so hard on that. Actually, everyone had. You knew what was in each of those boxes and bags, because everyone had been in such a buzz of excitement over their gifts, that while they managed to hide it from Diavolo, they had to share it with you.

With that in mind, you wonder again how you could have possibly forgotten Diavolo’s gift, with all those reminders around you. It’s too late to dwell on that now though, you’ll only get yourself worked up again and now could not be a worse time to find yourself upset. Diavolo was standing, talking with Barbatos now that he had opened all the gifts on the table and now that Lucifer had announced the special surprise from everyone. Now was the ideal time to bring him his card and promise to bring him a gift tomorrow. As you start to walk over Diavolo and Barbatos look in your direction as if they had been talking about you. They’re expressions both turn to smiles meant to invite you over and there was no way you could turn back now.

“Hey Y/N, would you mind joining me on the balcony for a minute?” the prince asked as you walked up.

“Oh, uh, sure,” you replied nervously.

“Thank you, Barbatos,” Diavolo said with a wave and putting his hand on the small of your back guiding you toward the balcony.

Barbatos nodded and walked off toward the party as the two of you stepped outside.

It was such a beautiful night out, you wished you could just stare off into the sky forever with Diavolo there next to you. You wished, but in reality you couldn’t put this off. You turned to Diavolo.

“I just wanted to-” you both started at the same time.

Diavolo chuckled, “you go first.”

“Uh, right,” you stuttered, holding up the card. “Happy birthday, Diavolo. T-there’s more, but I have to go get it tomorrow…”

Diavolo accepted the card and began to open the envelope.

“Wait, you don’t have to read that right now.”

The prince ignored your words and read the card that you had written a heartfelt message in. Moments ago you felt jealous seeing Diavolo make that delighted expression at others’ gifts, but now you felt quite embarrassed as he did so to yours. After the card he read the coupon and raised his eyebrows playfully at you.

“Any date?” he asked. “Were you going to reject me if I asked you without the coupon?”

“Oh, it's not like that,” you said, seeing the misunderstanding. “It’s more like if you want to do something or go somewhere that I normally wouldn’t, then I will for that.”

“Oh, I see. Well, I heard there’s this new place that opened up that does couples massages. They have a unique new massage where they let spiders crawl on your back…” Diavolo looked over to gauge your reaction.

“You have got to be kidding me…”

Diavolo let out a hearty laugh, “I am! Well, that massage does exist, but I would never make you do that.”

The relief you felt turned into a small chuckle of your own.

“You finally smiled,” Diavolo said, looking softly at you. “I’m glad. You’ve looked so upset since we came out here.”

“Huh?” had you really let it show on your face this whole time?

“I hope I haven’t done something to make you upset,” Diavolo looked at you apologetically. “Or maybe you’re stressed out from all the party preparations?”

“What? No, it’s nothing like that,” you said, grabbing his hand. “It’s not your fault at all! I’m only feeling like this because of my own mistake.”

“What do you mean?”

“I- well, I foolishly... I don’t even know how but,” earlier you promised not to cry, but you could barely get your words out now. “I forgot to get you a proper birthday present aside from the card. I’m so sorry, I promise I’ll go out and get you something tomorrow.”

You turned your body away from Diavolo and towards the balcony and looked down in shame. He placed the card on the balcony’s railing and looked out to the distance.

“You know,” Diavolo started in a calm and gentle voice. “I brought you out here because I wanted to thank you. Barbatos was just telling me how much you helped everyone with their gifts. I bet you even already knew what each person was giving me since you helped them all so much. Not only that, but I heard you helped with the cake, and the decorations for the party as well. You’ve already done so much for my birthday, I wouldn’t dream of asking for more and as much as you have been running around doing, I couldn’t fault you for forgetting something like that.”

“But-”

“No ‘buts’” Diavolo said, turning and cupping your face in his hands. “You are everything I could ever want for my birthday. Not just my birthday… You are everything I could ever want ever, every day.”

He leaned down and pressed his lips to yours in a gentle, but somehow passionate kiss. Everything seemed to melt away. All the anxiety, doubt, and disappointment, just disappeared. As his lips part from yours, a feeling of relief washes over you as you let the negative emotions go and truly believe his words meant to make you feel like you are enough.

“Will you stay with me in my room tonight?” he asked. “I have a coupon, if you’ll consider it a date?”

His warmth is contagious and you smiled back at him, “Don’t waste the coupon on that. I told you already the coupon is for asking me to do something I wouldn’t want to do.”
