Work Text:

1.

The first time Beau put on one of Yasha’s sweaters, she didn’t expect it to become a Thing. It had mostly been out of convenience.

It was on a sunny, early autumn day and Beau was supposed to have the day off so she and Yasha could have some quality time. However, their date plans changed when a lead from Dairon came through from the Cobalt Soul. So instead of having a picknick while the weather was still warm enough, Yasha had come with her to scope out the lead.

Their intention was to just sneak into the building, find evidence of the smuggling ring that had been running out of it and sneak back out. Then getting the evidence to the Soul so that they could follow up and decide how to approach from there. Easy.

Of course, nothing ever went as planned. It went fine up until they found out that there were still a few people in the building. They had quietly made most of their way there but then Yasha had knocked over a lamp. She mouthed a quick ‘sorry’ to Beau as it clattered onto the ground.

The bad news was that it alerted most people in the rooms next to them.

The good news was that those people were in the middle of smuggling a group of scared children off to Ioun knows where, giving Beau all the evidence she needed.

The fight that ensued was not pretty but at least it was relatively quick. The only casualty were Beau’s robes, which got torn up by one of the smuggling crew that had changed into a big wolf-like beast. Its claws had been sharp and nasty but at least most damage had been taken by her clothes and she kept the bleeding to a minimum.

Beau didn’t really pay attention to the state of her clothes, she had looked worse, but when the fight was over a heavily breathing Yasha took a quick look at Beau, pulled off the dark sweater she was wearing and tossed it at her girlfriend.

“Here, don’t want you to get a cold.”

The sweater was of course way too big on Beau’s small frame. It almost came down to her knees and she had to pull the sleeves up so that she could use her hands. It was also the most comfortable sweater Beau had ever worn.

After the two of them made sure the children were safe and cared for, Beau told Yasha she could head back home. It was probably going to be a late night going through some of the papers they’d found in the building and tying up some ends, this wasn’t the only city they were operating out of so they weren’t done with the ring yet.

She kissed her girlfriend goodnight and promised she would make sure to go home if she got too tired instead of falling asleep on her notes. The slight shake of Yasha’s head told Beau she didn’t believe a word of it. She was probably right, it wouldn’t be the first time Beau fell asleep in the library.

“Probably one of our better dates,” Yasha commented.

“Way more exciting than a picknick,” Beau laughed and kissed her one last time before heading off.

When she got to the library she wasn’t surprised to find Caleb there. He had practically been living at the place. Not that Beau was in a place to judge, she wasn’t much better.

“Nice sweater” he commented, a grin on his face as he eyed the sweater that she was basically drowning in. She flipped him off but couldn’t help the soft smile that had come to her face just thinking about her girlfriend.

“Well, I look good in anything.”

Caleb just shook his head and went back to work. Beau took up her usual spot at the same table and ignored the chuckles that she occasionally heard from his end of the table as she felt him glancing over at her. She buried herself in the warmth and comfort of the sweater and started to work.

Yasha never got her sweater back.

2.

After the first time, Beau didn’t necessarily mean to make a habit out of stealing Yasha’s clothes, it just kind of happened.

The next time Beau took one of her sweaters was when she and Yasha accompanied Caleb and Essek on one of their many trips to the ruins of Aeor. The two of them had asked her and Yasha to come along for extra assistance if they wanted, Caleb shooting a knowing glance Beau’s way when he told her it would be good to get out of the library for a bit.

He wasn’t wrong. She had spent the better part of the last three months hunched over in chairs, often bundled up in Yasha’s big black sweater that she had never given back. It had been the only comfort in the weeks of looking through any books and notes and witness statements that could help to round up the other parts of the smuggling ring Dairon had told her about. They’d found nothing so far. No leads, no track records of the group they were looking for, absolutely nothing. It was exhausting.

After much protesting on Beau’s part, Yasha, Caleb and Dairon had succeeded in getting her to agree to take some time off. Caleb insisting he needed her help up in Eiselcross. Of course she knew it had mostly been an excuse to get her away but it had made her feel better. She wasn’t good at taking breaks when she was in the middle of something and this way she could at least feel like she was somewhat productive.

The first time they’d been here they had all been too on edge and had bigger problems than the cold of the region. Beau hadn’t really cared then, that even her winter robes didn’t cover half of her body. She usually was adamant that yes, it was necessary to show off her abs and no, she wasn’t cold. She didn’t have the time or energy to be cold.

However, with no need to rush, they were taking their sweet time rummaging through parts of the ruins and she felt the cold slowly creep into her bones. Essek and Caleb were wearing thick jackets as they went digging through every little nook and cranny, making sure they didn’t miss anything that could be crucial to their research.

Beau spend half of the time assisting them and half of the time being distracted by Yasha trying to befriend the mice scurrying around while simultaneously making sure her girlfriend didn’t touch any big red buttons.

Yasha was bundled up in her big fuzzy coat and she looked adorable to Beau. Her eyes hungrily taking in all the different and weird things in the ruins. While she didn’t understand as much about it as Caleb and Essek or even Beau, she was obviously delighted at exploring and getting out of the city for a bit as well.

Yasha always got anxious for her when she got this frustrated with a case and Beau knew it had been taking a toll on both of them. It was maybe the biggest reason she’d agreed to come.

Beau walked over to Yasha and the mouse that she’d been trying to befriend with a piece of bread. The mouse immediately scuttled away as she approached and Yasha looked up.

“I made a friend! Did you find anything yet?”

Beau shrugged, “Apparently there’s a stack of papers they’re really excited over. Some magic stuff that I don’t understand shit from. Want to have a fun date exploring some of the other levels with me?”

“You’re shivering,” Yasha commented as they were making their way down to the level below.

“I’m fine. We’ve just been sitting around instead of moving and it isn’t exactly warm down here.”

Yasha hadn’t even waited for Beau to finish speaking before she took off her coat, ready to wrap it around Beau’s shoulders. Beau laughed fondly.

“You know your coat is way too big for me, I would barely be able to walk.”

Yasha rolled her eyes, “Fine. You have a point. Here. Take this one then.” She tugged off the sweater she had been wearing underneath her coat and handed it to Beau, then put her coat back on.

“But then you won’t be able to admire my abs anymore,” Beau joked as she put on the sweater, this one a light creamy colour with colourful flowers stitched into it. Yasha had gotten it as present from Jester. It wasn’t really Beau’s style but it was as warm and comfy as the other one she had. It gave her the same feeling of being held, so she was not going to complain.

“That is sad, yes but I rather have you not get hypothermia. Besides, I expect to do more than just see your abs later anyway.”

Beau grinned up at Yasha, giving her a quick wink as she laced their hands together.

“You have a deal, babe.”

When they eventually got back to the two others Caleb just raised an eyebrow at Beau’s newly acquired sweater (and loss of visible abs). She just stuck her tongue out to him as answer.

“I like your sweater, Beauregard. Although I wouldn’t have taken you for a flower wearing type,” Essek commented when he turned around to look at them, oblivious to her interaction with his boyfriend. Unlike Caleb, he sounded genuine.

“I am full of surprises.”

Caleb rolled his eyes and Yasha let out a soft chuckle as she shook her head, looking fondly at Beau.

“Ah yes, that you are,” Essek nodded, glancing over at the interactions.

“I like the way it looks on you,” Yasha whispered in her ear on their way out and Beau decided that she wasn’t giving this sweater back either.

3.

A few weeks had gone by and Yasha was missing some of her sweaters. Not that it was hard to figure out where they went. After the two that she had given Beau to wear, more of her clothes had started disappearing. Most of them would turn up in the laundry or back in the closet later, apart from the black and the flower ones which Beau apparently kept hidden somewhere. Yasha would only see them when Beau was wearing them. It didn’t happen too often, usually it was when Yasha visited her at the Cobalt Soul. She would find Beau huddled up in a corner, buried in her sweater with a book in her hand and several more strewn around her in a pile of notes.

Yasha wasn’t entirely sure why Beau hadn’t said anything about the sweaters but she also didn’t really care. It always gave her a warm feeling when she saw Beau in her clothes. They were way too big on her and she always looked smaller than she actually was, which was very cute in Yasha’s opinion.

The best thing however, was how relaxed Beau seemed when she was huddled up in a big sweater, the sleeves dangling over her hands. Sometimes, Beau would bundle up the sweaters so that they would look more like her usual crop tops but other times she would find Beau curled up the sweater tugged over her knees, fast asleep between the books.

When that happens Yasha usually curled up next to her, pressing a soft kiss to the top of her head and ready to just nap in the library for a bit with Beau. A sleepy Beau then responds by burying herself in Yasha’s chest, a soft sigh escaping her mouth as she relaxes in her sleep against Yasha. Most of the other monks and Soul members were used to finding Beau or the two of them asleep and Dairon even had a few blankets she kept in one of the rooms for whenever it happened and they would just tug one of them over Beau so she was more comfortable. The few times Yasha had been there she had given it to Yasha with a nod and a soft smile. Yasha was glad that they didn’t hold a grudge against her for everything that happened, and for everything they did for Beau.

Yasha remembered when Beau had come home the first time it happened, very confused over why she had woken up with a blanket draped over her and her books. She wasn’t sure if she and Dairon ever had a conversation about it but it was obvious that Beau’s mentor cared for her. As well as the other way around. Yasha was glad, Beau deserved all the love and people that cared for her that she could get.

However cute Beau in her sweaters was, as it had been getting well into the colder months of the year, Yasha did need some new sweaters for herself. Beau was off with Dairon to Zadash for however long they were needed there and Yasha had been getting antsy at home now that she didn’t have her garden to tend to. The few fall flowers that were still blooming would start withering soon now that the days got colder. She liked having something to do with her hands and now that the cold was coming she needed something else.

As she was wandering the market, her eye fell upon a small stall tugged between some others. Ideas started forming in her head as she made her way to the colourful stall. The different wools and cottons draped out gave her an amazing idea of what she could do during the colder months. She was certain Beau would love it.

Beau got back a few days later. The sky is already dark and the stars are out as she stumbles in, battered and bruised. Apparently her and Dairon had gotten caught in a different part of the smuggling network she and Beau had found before in Rexxentrum. Their boss had apparently fled to the people they had in Zadash. Luckily, Beau and Dairon had been able to infiltrate and find the boss and beat him up before he could escape again. However, not without any injuries.

Yasha tended over Beau’s wounds as best she could. She had learned a bit from Caduceus and she used the bit of magic she had to mend some of Beau’s bruised ribs. The result wasn’t too bad. The bruises would be tender but fade by themselves over the next few days. Yasha still insisted that Beau stayed home, she’d been overworking herself and now that they had found the man she could have a break without worrying.

“Here, put this on.” Yasha throws the sweater she bought a few days ago over at Beau. Beau frowns at it.

“I’m good but thanks.”

“Beau.”

“I’m fine! It’s not that cold.”

Beau.”

Beau groans. “Fine,” she grumbles as she gets up, ignoring the sweater Yasha threw at her and instead starts to rummage through their closet for a while, emerging with one of Yasha’s older, light blue hooded sweaters. She puts it on, the hood obscuring most of her face. Yasha watches as Beau closes her eyes, takes a deep breath and smiles. Then she looks up and raises a questioning eyebrow at her. Yasha nods her approval, not entirely sure why the other sweater wasn’t good enough but happy that Beau is at least home warm and safe.

“Thanks for taking care of me,” Beau says after they’ve cuddled up in bed together, Yasha holding Beau tight against her chest while also making sure she’s careful of her healing ribs.

“Just make sure to always come home safe so I can keep doing that, or take me with you, when possible of course. I want to make sure you’re safe.”

“Mhmm. I will. I like fighting with you by my side. It makes me better.”

“That’s because you’re a show-off.”

“True. But you like watching me fight so I’m also just doing it to for your benefit.”

“Your abs do look really good when you fight,” Yasha laughs softly and she places a kiss on Beau’s shoulder.

“Does this mean our next date is going to be fighting ninja dogs again?” Yasha asks, not entirely jokingly.

“I’ll figure something out.” Beau says, already half asleep by the way her voice drags. Yasha revels in the feeling of having Beau safe in her arms again, wrapped in her sweater before she drifts off to sleep as well.

4.

Their next date was not fighting ninja dogs.

Instead, Beau got the idea to redo their earlier date and actually have that autumn walk and picknick. The sun was shining and she had to recover anyway so it was the perfect time for a nice hike together with some food.

Yasha was hesitant, she could feel a storm brewing, although she couldn’t pinpoint where or when it would be. Her gut told her that one was coming, or maybe the Stormlord did.

Beau waved it off, “We’ll be back long before it arrives.”

So the two of them spent the day outside. The wind was chilly but the sun was bright and their hike was lovely. It was quiet outside the bustling of the city. They walked comfortably for a while. Catching up on what they each had been up to or just joking around.

The view was beautiful now that the leaves were all turning various shades of yellow, orange and red. Beau picked up a particularly nice leaf from the ground and stuck it in Yasha braid. It was big and golden and with the way she’d placed it, it looked like Yasha had a halo behind her head, or a little crown.

“Now you look even more like an angel.”

Yasha chuckled and her cheeks were pink from the wind as Beau admired her handiwork (and her girlfriend) and placed a soft kiss on Yasha’s cheek “I like it.”

As they continued walking, close together and hands intertwined, Beau’s eyes fall upon a big pile of leaves. She glances over at Yasha, who hasn’t noticed the pile yet and is instead glancing up to the sky with worried eyes. The sky is still blue, although a few white clouds had begun slowly drifting over the landscape.

“Babe! Watch!” Beau calls as she drops Yasha’s hand and starts sprinting to the pile of leaves. She takes a running leap and jumps as far and high as she can, landing face first into the pile. Everything muffles as her body disappeares into the leaves.

“Beau!” she hears Yasha shout after her and when she laughingly emerges from the leaves Yasha is standing next to her.

“So how did I look?”

“Very graceful.” Yasha reaches out to remove a leaf that was stuck in Beau’s braid, laughing.

“Think you can do better?” Beau challenges, a mischievous smile on her face as she watches Yasha’s eyes narrow at the challenge.

“Challenge accepted.”

Yasha wins most leaves scattered but Beau wins for best jump.

They laugh as they make their way back home. The sky is getting dark and the wind is picking up. Beau picks a stray leaf out of Yasha’s hair as Yasha glances at the sky.

“I told you it was going to storm.”

“It’s not even raining yet.”

The words have barely left Beau’s mouth or there’s a rumble in the distance and the sky bursts open. Big drops of rain start to drop down on them from the sky. Within seconds it goes from a few drops to pouring rain. Yasha looks pointedly at the sky and then at Beau, who just blinks back at her. Then they both start running.

Halfway home they have given up on making it back sort of dry. They’re both soaked to the bone, their wet clothes sticking to their skin and wet hairs plastered to their faces.

“Dance with me?” Beau asks, holding out her hand to Yasha, who’s surprised expression quickly turns into a big smile.

Together, they dance their way home, laughing all the way while the rain pours down onto them. The air around them fills with joy, laughter, the pattering of the raindrops onto the street and the crackling of thunder and lightning.

When they return home they’re both drenched and cold but happy. They quickly shed their wet clothes and take a warm bath to fight off the chill from the rain. Afterwards, Beau immediately puts on the black sweater she stole from Yasha, it’s her favourite one.

“You really love my sweaters huh babe?” Yasha teases as she walks into the room after (mostly) drying her hair and seeing Beau curled up onto their couch in the sweater.

Beau’s cheeks turn red and she ducks her head.

“It’s okay I love seeing you in my clothes.” Yasha sits next to Beau and Beau immediately hides her face in Yasha’s shoulder, mumbling something.

“What?”

“I like them because they’re big and comfy and they smell like you and you smell like home so they make me feel like home and it helps when I’m anxious or stressed.” The words tumble out quickly and even though Beau has never been more comfortable with anyone than she is with Yasha, it sometimes is still hard to put the way she feels into words. And to actually say them. But as she watches the soft way that Yasha is looking at her, her eyes wide but happy. She feels that the tiny ball of anxiety that still lingered somewhere deep inside her loosens up.

“You’re my home too, Beau,” Yasha says, voice low and she tilts Beau’s chin up with one hand so she can place a gentle kiss on her lips. Beau’s heart warms, as it always does when she’s around Yasha and she cuddles up into her girlfriend. Giving her one more kiss before she settles her head on Yasha’s shoulder.

“Your hair is still wet and cold,” Beau complains as she feels the wet strands against her neck.

Yasha laughs and wraps her arms tighter around Beau.

“Guess that comes with being home too. And it was a pretty great date.”

“Next time I’ll pick one  where we don’t get wet or cold or attacked by people,” Beau promises.

“But those are all of my favourite things.” Yasha nudges her and Beau rolls her eyes but starts laughing as well.

Yeah, Beau thinks as they sit curled up on the couch, two steaming cups of tea next to them, it was a pretty great date.

+1

This time it’s Yasha that planned the date. With some help from Jester she surprises Beau with a date where they won’t be interrupted by weather or work.

“You’re taking us to the Feywild?” Beau asks as she looks at Jester.

“The Feywild is great Beau! Artie showed me so many things there it’s amazing there’s these flowers that are super pretty but they will attack you if they touch them so be careful to not do that. Also there’s this one spot where it’s just like permanent night and it’s really pretty but that’s not where you’re going because Yasha said you wanted like nice average sunny weather maybe? Anyway, she let me pick the spot since Artie already showed me around for a bit and I couldn’t choose so I made a list and then Fjord helped me pick as well but I think that I found the perfect spot for your date!”

Beau looks from Jester to Yasha as she listens to Jester. Sometimes she still gets blown away by the things her friends will do for her. She gives Jester a big hug that gets enthusiastically reciprocated.

“Thanks, Jes.”

“Next time we’ll make it a double date! Ohhh or maybe we should do one of our birthdays there this year so I can show everyone the best spots!”

“I’m looking forward to that. It would be great to see everyone react to that.”

They share a sly smile, Beau can almost see the planning that is happening in Jester’s head. That really would be a fun trip for the group, she can already imagine the chaos that would bring.

“Okay we will plan that later together with Veth, Chaos Crew! But for now you have to go! The best date ever awaits! Have fun, love you guys!”

Beau and Yasha barely have time to say a quick ‘love you’ back as Jester is already pushing them through the portal.

Both of their mouths fall open as they take in the scenery. The blue sky that peeks through the tall trees is a wild change from the rainy weather at home. It’s a nice temperature and there are colourful blue flowers blooming around them. Everything has a slight magical essence that make it seem more vibrant and glowing than back on their own plane.

“Holy shit,” is all Beau can say. She looks over at Yasha who is just gaping with her mouth open, her eyes taking in the scenery around them.

“I can’t believe you asked Jester to do this”

“Well, I actually just asked for a good spot. She was the one that suggested to do it here. I would have never thought of that.”

“It’s amazing,” Beau says as they take a few steps, careful not to touch too many things as Jester warned them about that.

“It’s beautiful,” Yasha agrees.

The two of them take some time to adjust and to take everything in. Then Yasha turns to Beau.

“I have something for you.” She gets out a small package and holds it out to Beau, who curiously takes it. The nervous smile on Yasha’s face makes her wonder what it could be. As she takes off the wrapping the first thing she notices is the softness of the lump of wool in her hands. She quickly glances up at Yasha as she unfolds it and reveals the knitted sweater.

Beau’s mouth falls open as she takes it in. The black and blue colours fit perfectly with her usual clothes and it looks to be cropped but with long and wide sleeves. A few missing loops and small holes show that Yasha probably made it herself even though she didn’t have a lot of practice. Beau thinks it gives it a homemade charm and she is definitely not crying right now. She didn’t even know Yasha knew how to knit, she must have hidden it to keep it a surprise.

Beau pulls the sweater over her head, the too big sleeves immediately envelop her arms and hands. The sweater stops just above her abs but is a bit wide and the sleeves are a bit long but it still has a charm to it and it is the most comfortable thing Beau has ever worn. She looks back up at Yasha as her fingers run over the wool.

“You made this for me?” Her voice is soft as she asks but the smile on her face probably says enough.

“I did. I know you like big, warm sweaters and you keep stealing mine so I thought I would get you one of your own. Not that I don’t want you stealing mine anymore you can always steal mine I love seeing you in my clothes but I was learning how to knit so this was a good project. And I just like making things for you.”

Beau surges forward to kiss her and Yasha’s lips meet hers with a relieved sigh. Beau tries to pour all the love she feels for Yasha in the kiss, letting the softness and love speak through it. She’s always been better at actions than words.

“I love it Yasha. I love you. It’s perfect.”

“I love you too.” The smile on Yasha’s face is an even better present than the sweater. Beau will never get enough of that smile.

“It’s so soft! And just short enough that you can still admire my abs!”

Yasha grabs the sweater and pulls Beau close again with a smirk.

“You have really great abs. Why do you think I made it so short?”

“Exactly,” Beau says but the word gets forgotten as Yasha kisses her again. Beau has no complaints. She could kiss Yasha for the rest of her life and not get tired of it.

Later, as they’re strolling through the Feywild, after they’ve managed to calm down an angry group of pixies whose home they apparently accidentally walked through, Yasha teasingly tells Beau that she can sleep with her sweater so it will smell like her because Beau likes that so much. Beau punches her in the side playfully (but doesn’t object to the idea).

The knitted sweater becomes her new favourite sweater and if her friends tease her about always wearing it (and if not wearing that one she’s wearing of Yasha’s sweaters)

Well.

It’s worth it.
