S5 e12
“You just killed Kevin man”
“What did you just say”
“You just killed Kevin”
“Adam”
“Why couldn’t you have shot him in the leg”
“ADAM”
“HE WAS OUR ONLY LEAD”
“ADAM”
“WHAT IF I MISS AND HE SHOOTS BURGESS? THEN WHAT”
“HE MADE THE RIGHT CALL ADAM STOP”
“he made the right call”
But what if Antonio had made a different decision in that split second…
The guy points his gun in the direction of Kim and Antonio but instead of him shooting them what goes through Dawson’s head is Kev and what voight said: ‘do not shoot he’s our only lead to Kevin’ so he hesitates but he’s still Antonio so he aims down and just as he pulls the trigger to shoot the guy’s leg a bullet flies towards Kim.
It all happens in a millisecond: the bullet hits Kim square in the chest and just as she hits the ground Antonio’s bullet hits the guy in the leg, he goes down and is pinned down and arrested by voight and Al but now Kim’s bleeding…fast. Antonio, Adam, Jay and Hailey are kneeling around her in seconds putting pressure on the wound as an attempt to minimise blood loss but she’s already lost so much.
“5021-George I need an ambo to our location immediately we have an officer down bleeding fast” Jay radios for an ambulance the panic clear in his voice but it looks like it’s too late. Antonio checks for a pulse and moves adams hands to start cpr but this just causes the blood to gush faster. Adams shouting at him to stop he’s making it worse as tears stream down his face.
He asks how long the ambulance will be but they all know it’s too late. Hailey sits down, knees to her chest as she holds one of Kim’s hands with both of her own; she knows she’s gone.
Voight and Alvin had come over were standing behind jay, everyone silent. Adam is dead still his face etched into a look of disbelief and heartbreak barely daring to breathe as a blood continued to trickle from Kim’s chest, Adam’s hands still slowing the stream.
2 minutes later ambo 61 pulls up and Dawson and Brett jump out. Gabby grabbing the jump bag as Brett runs over; the shock and grief immediate on her face ‘Kim?…no..’
She kneels down puts one hand over Adam’s on the bullet hole and uses the other to check for a pulse that wasn’t there. Starting CPR, she asks how long she’s been down, the question directed at Adam but Hailey answered, ‘ten minutes.’ It was so matter for factly, like it obviously hadn’t sunk in what had just happened to one of her best friends.
Brett stopped compressions, sitting back on her heals, the period of time and the alarmingly large pool of blood around the officer clear there was nothing all the doctors in the world could do for her anymore. Gabby was stood behind Brett the same expression on her face as her partners. ‘ I’m so sorry’ she said to nobody in particular.
The offender had just left in a second ambo handcuffed to the stretcher with Voight ridding along, not trusting the job of making sure this dick got what he deserved to anybody else.
A few minutes passed that felt like hours that everyone stood or sat around Kim, nobody wanting to make the first move but eventually gabby reached for her radio “61 to main, patient is doa”. The truth of Gabby’s words washed over everyone like a wave that drags you under leaving you desperately trying to reach air again and tears streamed down adam’s face, still in too much shock to make a sound.
