Work Text:
Dear Son,
I want you to know that- more than anything- your Bucky and I will always love you.
I’m glad that you see Buck as a father. I know he’ll be there for you even if I can’t, but son, adult relationships are messy. He is a very good friend of mine. He’s my best friend (besides the fact that you’re his favorite Diaz). He has Taylor, remember, mijo. They love each other a whole lot. It wouldn’t be fair to her to ask him to start dating me instead.
Buck would save us. That’s what best friends do, bud. We work so closely together that his caring spirit can’t help but spill over into our personal lives, too. I did not know that about the well. I don’t like to go back and watch news clips of our calls. Thank you so much for telling me anyway, because that just reminds me how lucky I am to have him as a friend. Did you know that the week after that happened was the week that I made him your legal guardian?
I know Buck cooks for us a lot, too. I’m very thankful for that. Believe me (The pesto chicken and garlic butter fettuccini from last week almost rivals your Abuelita’s cooking). Carla does a good bit though. Don’t count her out too much. I bet she knows how to spiralize pasta. And I’m sure either one of them could teach me in an hour if they put their minds to it. (Okay maybe a couple of hours. Your dad is a little dense, but practice makes perfect).
And what do you mean Santa isn’t real? You calling Mr. Martinez and me liars? Right after you called me stupid, too. My own son, too. How about this? I’ll let Santa know about the hot wheels and video games, if you make sure to help Buck with the dishes. Keep your bed made, too.
Love,
Dad
(PS: Don’t grow up too fast on me Chris. Now it’s Santa, but next I know you’ll be off to college halfway across the country leaving me here in California. There is one extra condition to the video game. Buck plays it first. If he thinks its too violent, we’re returning it. I trust his judgment)
