Work Text:
It was the first time that your boyfriend of three years, Sawamura Daichi, forgot your birthday. it was not that you were expecting anything, just a greeting from him would suffice. you knew that he has been busy with work lately, so you kind of pushed it aside when he rushed out to get to work this morning.
The day went by quickly as you were also swamped with work. you checked your phone before heading out, but no voicemails or text messages were left by your boyfriend. You let out a sigh. You texted Daichi, saying you were coming home and asking what he wanted for dinner, assuming he would come home later than you.
As you were about to go, your coworkers pulled you to the lunchroom and surprised you with a little celebration that they put together. "Guys, you didn't have to," you said, letting out a laugh as one of them placed a birthday hat on you. "But thank you. It means a lot." It was just a little celebration that they had arranged, some easy to eat food, drinks and cake. It was just quick, a lot of talk about housekeeping and marriages and kids, which made you think of Daichi, and made you smile.
You waved goodbye to your coworkers and thanked them once again. As you checked your phone, there were at least ten missed calls and fifteen text messages from Daichi. That's when you noticed that it has been over an hour and a half since you texted him. You immediately sent him a text, apologizing, and that you were on your way home.
As you opened the front door, you noticed that the lights were all dimmed. "Babe?" you called out, wondering if he was already asleep, which was unlikely, but the thought crossed your mind anyway. You make your way through the house and spot him, with his back towards you, so you thought maybe he didn't hear you come in.
"Hey, I'm sorry I'm late," you said as you made your way to him. "Have you eaten?" You were so busy taking off your coat and letting down your hair that you didn't notice that the dining table was packed.
You looked at Daichi, who was now turned to face you, and a big smile on his face, "Happy birthday, my angel." He got up and pulled you in a warm hug. It took you a minute to respond to the hug as you were surprised by the food that's already prepped on the table. "Did you really think I would forget? Me?" He asked, trying to sound insulted. He kept you at arms length as he looked at you.
You hugged him again, with your face buried on his chest. "No." You replied and held him closer. "Okay, I kind of did." You whispered, hoping that he would not hear you. Butterflies were doing somersaults in your tummy. You were showered with greetings and food and gifts today, but nothing can compare when it came from someone you love.
You felt him chuckle, and you can tell he was shaking his head. "Oh, you," He said, as he kissed your forehead. "I'll never forget the day my favorite person was born." You looked up at him, trying to suppress a smile. He leaned down and kissed you, softly, holding both your cheeks.
You squeezed him a bit, broke the kiss and looked up at him, "Thank you, Daichi."
