The AU I want but Couldn’t Find!

Summary:

High School AU! Just something that’s been in my head, and I wish there was more of! Pretty sure the title also says it all though.

Notes:

So I’ve always wanted a High School AU, but couldn’t find any. Just one that was a one shot. So I thought I’d fill that gap in just a little bit!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Jane walked into the lunch room, looking around she spotted Garrus, her best friend and brother from another mother, if that saying applied to aliens that is, and Tali, her good friend who was like a little sister to her, they waved her over and she sat on the opposite side of the table, plopping her bag beside her. “Shepard there you are! Was wondering if you got lost or something.” Garrus chuckled, earning an eye roll from the red head.
“Ha ha, very funny. I had to drop something off to Professor Solus.” She arched her brow at Tali, who was typing away on her omni tool and making adjustments to her little drone. “How’s Chatika doing?”
“Better. Worked out most of the bugs, and no more zapping!”
“Great, because I had my fair share of shocks.” Garrus grumbled.
“I said I was sorry!” Garrus smiled, nudging his shoulder into hers.
“I’m just messing with you, Vas Normandy.” His mandibles twitched “Doesn’t mean I like getting electrocuted though.” Shepard couldn’t help but laugh as she listened to her best friend's banter, remembering the time Garrus was napping on their couch as Chatika was wandering around their apartment. Tali was busy doing some project, and all they heard was the turian yelling as the little drone touched his arm that was hanging off the couch. Shepard ran into the living room, almost falling over in laughter as she watched Garrus fall off the couch, leg twitching slightly, and Tali running behind her screaming apologies. Ever since then, he has always looked at it suspiciously.
“So… who's hungry?” Jane offered, reaching in her bag as she pulled out three small containers from her bag and placing them on the table. They each grabbed one, looking at its contents before swapping between each other. Shepard shoved a spoonful of potato salad into her mouth, humming delightfully as she took another spoonful, stopping mid way as Fist squeezed himself between Garrus and Tali, his hands on the table as he leaned forward, facing the quarian with a smirked.
“Who let the gremlin in?” Garrus grumbled. “Hey! There’s no room for you here!” Fist turned to face Garrus.
“I’ve got no business with you, so butt out.” He looked back to the quarian. “Tali, my friend wants to know if you're available?”
“Excuse me?” Tali leaned back, edging away from the human.
“You should go, before things go south.” Shepard spoke between bites, Garrus placed his hand on Fists shoulder, but that earned him an elbow to the cheek, the turians mandibles flexed as he shook off his daze and delivered a punch to the gut. Fist doubled over, clutching his gut, one of his ‘friends’ came over and climbed over the table, reaching for Garrus but was stopped when Shepard grabbed his leg and pulled hard, making the fool fall to the ground. She looked to the floor and let out an annoyed grunt as her food was splattered on the ground. Before the two could retaliate, Aria caught them in a biotic hold, shaking her head as Nyreen walked past her.
“You kids know better than to fight on school grounds.” The turian female tsked.
“They started it!” Fist called out.
“Bullshit, I saw from a mile away that you were causing trouble again.” Nyreen glared, looking to Aria as she released her biotic hold. “You two, Anderson's office. As for you two, I’ll be seeing you Saturday.” Shepard and Garrus were about to argue when Nyreen put up her hand, silencing anything they were about to say. “Not a word, I know you didn’t start it, but you could’ve handled it better.” She left it at that and walked away, Aria right behind her as she let out a sigh, pinching the bridge of her nose.
“Don’t you mean, I’ll be seeing them Saturday. Can’t believe I have to spend another weekend with these brats.” She mumbled.
“Should’ve thought about that before you punched TIM.” Nyreen laughed, watching Aria roll her eyes before nudging the turian away from her.
“He was asking for it, with the shit that was coming out of his mouth.”
“Yeah, yeah.”

Garrus sat with his head on his folded arms as he looked at the time, Shepard covered his eyes hearing a groan as she laughed. “Won’t make it go any faster there bud.” The doors to the library opened, and both Liara T’Soni and Miranda Lawson came walking in, taking a seat in front of Garrus and Shepard. She didn’t understand why she saw them here, of all places! Liara is such a goodie-two-shoes, and Miranda took school very seriously, she had to know how and why they got detention! Jane arched her brow at the blue asari, blinking rapidly as she rubbed her eyes as if she was seeing ghosts. “What are you guys doing here?”
“We became a little too… heated in our debate.” Miranda mumbled.
“Yeah, Lawson over there threw a chair and T’Soni bioticaly threw her against a wall.” Aria chimed in, scrolling through her data pad as she didn’t bother looking up.
“Nice.” Garrus grinned, nudging Liara’s shoulder as a blush crept to her cheeks.
“Must’ve been a really good debate.” Shepard laughed, Miranda glared at the two and rolled her eyes. “So who won?”
“I did.” They both said in unison, eyes shooting daggers at each other.
“None of that, you two are here for fighting. Remember that.” Aria called out. Shepard sat back, crossing her arms and letting her body slump into the chair and her head fall back as she closed her eyes and dozed off. Time felt like it barely moved, but half an hour has passed, and everyone is trying in their own way to make time fly by. Liara found herself glancing back at the red head, smiling as the human snored lightly, her eyes studying her face for a moment before landing on the scar on her neck that trailed down her collarbone. Funny, she’s never noticed that before. Miranda had left for the restroom, and Garrus fell asleep beside Shepard, Aria didn’t even bother acknowledging them only when needed. Liara couldn’t help her curiosity, she reached out and Shepard instantly grabbed her hand, slowly opening her eyes. Her hand was warm against the asari’s skin, and Shepard arched her brow, smiling.
“Take me out on a date first before you get touchy.” She half slurred, shaking the sleep off before winking at the asari. The blush that burned Liara’s cheeks was unbearable and she turned around and hid her face in her hands.
“I-I am sorry!” She cried out, earning a glance from Aria and waking Garrus. “Let’s just forget that happened…” She whispered. Shepard poked her shoulder, but Liara refused to look back, knowing well enough that her blush was still evident. One more poke before Shepard cleared her throat.
“Garrus, Tali, and I are going to the SilverSun district after this.” Liara took a chance and turned towards the red head, seeing onyx eyes shine brightly as her full lips pulled into a gentle smile “Would you wanna come with?” Garrus couldn’t help the smirk on his face, elbowing Shepard as she pushed him. Liara couldn’t form words and just nodded, not trusting her mouth to speak without sounding like a blubbering fool. “Great!” Jane’s smile widened as she sat back in her chair. Miranda came back, taking her seat, she looked between then two.
“What’s with the goofy faces?”
“I dunno what you talkin’ bout.” Shepard stretched out.
Before Miranda could ask another question, Aria stood up, almost knocking the chair to the floor as the time ticked to 16:30.
“Alright! Get out! I can’t stand looking at your faces anymore, especially you Shepard.” She smirked, seeing the human stand up as she laughed
“Oh please Aria, you know you love this pretty face. Much better than staring at Vakarians ugly mug.” Garrus stood up now.
“That’s not what you said yesterday, Shepard.” He walked past her, glancing back as she laughed.
“Yeah yeah, go, get lost. I have other places to be, besides here.” Aria grabbed her white leather jacket from off the chair and left from the opposite side door. Miranda was right behind her, and Garrus was waiting just outside the door. Jane looked to Liara, walking side by side as they left the library
“So… See you later?”
“Yes… See you later.” They both smiled
“I’ll call you!” Shepard called out as she chased after her best friend.
~
“So you finally asked her out huh?” Garrus chuckled.
“What?! No! I mean, kinda? But not really! We’re just… ya’know? Hanging out.” She finished drying her hair off with her towel before throwing it at Garrus.
“Oh come on Shepard! Would you at least admit you like Liara?” Tali chimed in, walking into the apartment. Jane rolled her eyes.
“Okay! So maybe I do.”
“Maybe? Shepard you get tongue tied most of the time when you two talk. It’s unbearable to watch.” Garrus grinned, and Shepard glared, tilting her head towards Tali as the turian went wide eyed.
“Can it, Vakarian!” He put his hands up, shaking his head wildly. Tali looked between them, confused. “Anyways, are you guys ready?” A nod. “So let’s go.” They left the apartment, Garrus and Tali walking behind Shepard as they sang songs about her and Liara earning an annoyed sigh as she wanted to strangle the two. “You two are embarrassing sometimes…” She pressed the button for the lobby, her best friends laughter echoing in the halls as the elevator door closed.

Notes:

I hope you enjoyed reading, still unsure on if I should write more and make it into a full on story or leave it as a one shot and possibly make more one shots within this universe. Guess it depends on if people actually like this lol but thanks for reading! Feel free to leave comments!
