Chapter 1: A single crow cawing at you brings bad luck

Chapter Text

“Must we?” Pansy complained, hiding her face in her pillow.

“It’s your mother, love. She invited us to this party weeks ago, and has been sending us memories every couple of days,” he explained, kissing the top of her head.

“I swear, Calliope Parkinson loves you more than she loves me, her only child,” she said, getting to her feet, and throwing her pillow across the room. Neville just smiled, kissing the top of her head as he hugged her.

He had already gone for a run that morning, and took a shower while she slept in. Saturday morning was her rest time. “You’re not even going to deny it! That my mother likes you more?”

“Breakfast is ready, waiting for you on the table,” he said, stroking her hair and watching the prettiest blue eyes blinking at him, still sleepy.

“What did you make?” Pansy asked, holding a little tighter around his waist.

“French toast and fresh coffee. Off you go,” Nev said, patting her bottom.

“You will pay for that, Neville Longbottom!” she murmured, but didn’t let go.

“I’ll be waiting, Pansy Longbottom.”

They had just crossed the gates to Parkinson Manor, when the strangest thing happened. Not just one, but 5 crows landed on their path and started cawing at them. Pansy let go of his hand like it burned.

“Sweetheart?” he asked, trying to reach for her, but she just shook her head.

“A single crow cawing at you brings bad luck, 5 is the other unlucky number, a terrible omen It means we are not meant to be, that our relationship is doomed to fail from the beginning,” she explained, “We should never have got married!”

“Pansy, don’t be foolish! It’s just a bird!” he exclaimed, rolling his eyes.

The sting on his cheek had been unexpected, but Neville watched her blue eyes hardening, like water freezing into ice, “Do not roll your eyes at me, Neville Longbottom. Do not make fun of me! This is not a joke.”

“Sweetheart…”

“No, you can’t just all be all kind now after dismissing my fears!” she yelled, before apparating on the spot.

The Gryffindor just stood there, watching the crows fly away. What had just happened? He and Pansy hadn’t engaged in an argument in so long. Their relationship had just been blissful. And she had never slapped him, not in anger and disappointment.

Before Calliope could even appear, he apparated home, but the wards kept him outside. He knocked at the door, hoping she would open the door.

“Go away, Neville! I don’t want to talk with your right now!” His wife’s head appeared from their bedroom window.

“Pansy, this is my house as well!” he said, maybe louder than he should, but he was scared. Nev just wanted to comfort her, to wrap his arms around her and apologise.

“I need to be alone to understand what we have done wrong, to have such bad omen cross into our life,” she shook her, “I’m the terrible person, so it’s my sins catching up with me, catching up with us!”

“Pansy, love, no… no… that’s not it,” he whispered, not believing what he was hearing from her mouth. “I’m coming up!”
