Work Text:
Madara’s eyes blink open slowly.
It’s morning time.
The sun filters in through their blinds and into Madara’s face.
Madara yawns quietly, aware that his precious lover is still soundly asleep in his arms.
A tiny smile graces his face.
Sometimes his life seems surreal.
He had a beautiful boyfriend, amazing home, two trouble making cats, a wonderful job, and friends he would die for.
His life couldn’t get any better.
Well it could but he had to man up first.
He turns his head to look behind him to see what time the clock said.
11:34 AM.
They slept past the alarm.
‘Thank goodness we had nothing to do this morning.’
Madara thinks to himself.
He glances back down to Tobirama. Madara uses his free hand to stroke Tobirama’s arm gently.
Tobirama turns over in his sleep causing Madara to pause his movements. Tobirama settles on his back, head facing away from Madara.
Madara sighs quietly in relief.
He’ll wake Tobirama up but not quite yet.
He gently removes his other arm from underneath Tobirama and stands up, stretching his arms above his head before reaching down to try and touch his toes. He fails but Tobirama isn't awake to mock him so he doesn’t dwell on it for too long.
Madara walks over to the closet and kneels down to riffle through their shoes, searching for something.
Madara picks up an old box that holds a pair of hiking boots.
Madara glances back to the bed to make sure Tobirama is still sleeping.
Yep. Still sound asleep.
Madara turns back to the box in hand. He opens it to reveal the black boots inside.
He lifts up the left one and turns it upside down.
Inside the old boot is a tiny little black box.
The ring was a fire opal with a blue water drop diamond. It was a 10k black gold ring and Madara is sure Tobirama will love it.
Madara wants to turn his boyfriend into his husband. To do that he needs to ask.
Madara had numerous occasions he could have asked his lover to marry him but he always chickened out at the last minute. (23 times to be exact but Madara was NOT counting)
One time he got as far as getting on one knee but Candle and Flame, his two trouble-making cats, attacked him from behind making him shout in fright, flail and fall on his face.
Tobirama laughed so he played it off as a joke but his heart was aching at the failure to propose.
Needless to say those two did not get their treats for two whole days. (Tobirama said it was only two hours but he’s a liar).
This morning would be different. Madara was asking Tobirama no matter what. Today was the day.
He pulls the beautiful ring out of the box and admires it for a second. The diamonds flash brightly in the light. Inside the band there is an engraving that reads ‘You are my beating heart, now and forever’
Tobirama snorts and rolls over, causing a flash of panic.
Tobirama settles without waking up, nuzzling Madara’s pillow.
Madara places the boot back into the closest and quietly stands up.
He walks over to the bed and just stares at the sheer beauty of the man he is fortunate enough to call boyfriend and hopefully husband. Even now, after all these years Madara still considers himself lucky to be able to call Tobirama his. They’ve been through so much; fights (both verbal and physical), accidental infidelity, uncertainty, and so much more, but somehow they still manage to stick together.
‘Fortunate indeed.’
Madara glances at the clock again, the time reading 11:47.
Madara pulls the ring out of the box and sets it on the dresser.
Madara crawls onto the bed and over top of Tobirama.
Tobirama’s left hand is right next to his face.
Madara gently grabs ahold of it and slips the ring on his finger.
He pulls the hand to his face and kisses each knuckle slowly.
’Please say yes’
He gently drops the hand back onto the bed.
Madara lays his body gently on top of Tobirama and brings his face close to his ear.
“Tobi-Baby, honey bee, it’s time to wake up.” He whispers rubbing his bearded face against Tobirama’s clean shaven face.
Tobirama’s eyes twitch and his nose scrunches up but otherwise ignores Madara.
Madara kisses Tobirama’s forehead and makes to get off his slumbering love.
Tobirama’s arms wrap around his body before he can get too far.
“Where do you think you are going asshole?” Tobirama’s voice thick with sleep, his eyes still closed.
Madara chuckles and leans down to kiss Tobirama’s neck.
“We need to get up, young prince.”
Tobirama ignores Madara in favor of rubbing his face against the other for a moment.
“Nah, I need you to shut up and cuddle with me.” He whispers against Madara’s beard.
Madara kisses Tobirama lightly on the lips, pulls away, grabs the little black box off the dresser, gets off the bed and opens the door to leave the room.
Candle and Flame immediately run into the room, almost knocking Madara down, and jump on the bed to snuggle against Tobirama.
Madara smiles despite his annoyance at the domestic scene and heads to the kitchen.
Tobirama remains in bed, eyes closed, both hands on each cat petting them. He hears Madara moving in the kitchen.
A few minutes later, Madara comes back to the bedroom and carefully climbs onto the bed and sits next to Tobirama’s body.
Madara holds the mug near Tobirama’s face and he hears Tobirama take a large sniff.
“I have coffee.” Madara says in an attempt to get his beautiful heart out of bed.
Tobirama’s face scrunches up and Madara covers his laugh by taking a sip of the coffee.
“Ten more minutes?” Tobirama says.
“Five.” Madara states.
“Mmm...seven minutes and a kiss?” Tobirama says with barely contained hope in his voice.
“Six and pancakes.” Madara says, taking another sip of coffee.
“Five minutes, pancakes, and a two minute kiss right now.”
“Hmmm, deal.”
Tobirama opens his eyes quickly and he smiles brightly.
“It was a pleasure doing business with you Maddy-Daddy!”
“Don’t call me that.” he huffs out, leaning in to give the other a kiss that most definitely goes over two minutes. He pulls away slowly, before giving one more peck on the lips whispering, “Pleasure is all mine.Five minutes lover boy.” before moving off of the bed and out the door. Before he gets too far, Madara calls out, “Make sure you wash your face and brush your teeth before you come down.”
“Yes Dad!” Comes the sarcastic remark.
Madara quickly walks downstairs, grabs the empty box from the table, gets down on one knee in front of the doorway and waits.
He hears Tobirama groaning and mumbling about something or another as he gets up out of bed.
Madara mentally counts the steps Tobirama takes to get to their bathroom. He counts the seconds as he waits.
“MMMMMMAAAAAADDDDDDAAAAARRRRRRAAAAA”
Tobirama screams at the top of his lungs. The pitch was impressive for someone with such a deep voice.
‘Thank goodness the one neighbor we have is away on vacation’
Madara gratefully thinks.
Tobirama’s bare feet are loud as he runs from the bathroom, out of the bedroom, through the hallway, down the steps and into the kitchen door where Madara is kneeling and holding up an empty box.
Tobirama’s face is red and he is breathing hard.
Madara can’t tell if it’s from running(Tobirama is less active than he is), embarrassment, excitement, or anger.
Dear lord, don't let it be anger.
Tobirama holds his hand up and points to the ring on his finger.
All the words Madara was going to say disappeared from his mind. The long speech he created is gone. Just like that.
The nerves, doubt, insecurities and fear take over Madara.
He forces out two words and prays that they’ll be enough for this moment.
“Marry me?”
“Only on one condition Madara?” Tobirama replies after a moment.
“Anything!” Hope coloring Madara’s voice.
Tobirama turns around and walks to the table in the living room, he pulls something out of the table and walks back to the kitchen doorway.
“Only if you marry me.” Tobirama holds up a red box and opens it. Inside it is a gorgeous golden ring in the shape of a hawk, the beak holding a fairly large diamond.
“Yes.” Madara quickly stands up and grabs hold of Tobirama. He takes the ring out of the box and places it on his ring finger.
“Yes yes yes” Madara says while picking Tobirama up and wrapping his legs around his waist, kissing him like it was going out of style.
“Yes,” Tobirama whispers into his cheek when Madara backs off for a moment to breathe.
“I love you.”
