‘Mama?’ a small and fragile voice broke through the silence. ‘Can we go back?’
Lyra looked down at her daughter.
‘Sorry Jyn, but we have to wait until daddy comes back.’ Lyra answered after a while.
‘When will dad come mama? It’s taking so long.’ Jyn replied.
‘I don’t know honey. But it’s just a practice. We’ll be okay.’ Lyra shrugged.
‘And actually, Jyn, it’s really cool! Because we can act like we’re getting chased, and have to hide from the bad people, right? And then papa will come to save us!’ Lyra said, in an attempt to make the situation a little bit less terrifying.
Silence and darkness filled the tiny room. Lyra wondered what was going to happen.
She couldn't keep Jyn hidden forever. Someday the secret would come out.
The first order would find her, Galen and Jyn, and tear their family apart.
She was staring into the silence, trying to prevent herself from crying, when she felt something warm brush past her hand.
When she looked down, she saw Jyn. Jyn looked at her, took her hand and smiled.
'I think I get it mama. I don't have to be scared. Like you always say. The force will protect me. And I will always have daddy and you.'
Lyra smiled. 'You will, Jyn. You will. We will always have each other.'
A loud knock interrupted their happiness. Jyn quickly jumped up and stood close to her mother.
'There's nothing to be afraid of Jyn. Don't worry.' Lyra whispered.
A small ray of light shined on Jyn's face.
The ray became bigger and a head popped up in the entrance above them.
'Papa!' Jyn shouted, happily.
'Stardust! Lyra!' Galen shouted back.
Jyn quickly climbed out of the shelter, and Lyra followed.
'Practice went great this time. You guys were quickly out of the house and there were only a few pieces of evidence left behind. Well done.' Galen said with a proud smile.
Jyn smiled and then ran out of the shelter, towards the fields.
'Papa, are you coming?' She asked.
'Just a second Stardust!' Galen replied quickly.
Galen looked at Lyra. ‘Is everything okay? You look stressed.' he whispered.
‘What if we lose her? What if you get found, and they capture us all?’ Lyra replied, looking shaken.
Galen grabbed her shoulders and looked her in the eyes. ‘It will be fine. We will always have each other. Even if we are separated, we will always be a family.’
Lyra nodded. ‘I’m just worried.’
Galen smiled at her. ‘Don’t be. Come on, let’s go back.’
Together they walked back to their house.
‘Dad? Do you want to play?’ Jyn said, walking towards Lyra and Galen.
Galen looked at Lyra and then back at Jyn.
‘I am Stardust, and I’m going to get you!’ he said jokingly.
They ran through the fields, Galen trying to catch Jyn, laughing and screming.
Lyra smiled, and continued walking.
They’ll always have each other.
No matter what happens next.
