Goodbyes were difficult, Mon-El knew that all too well by now.
When Winn had joined him in the future, his best friend had told him that when Mon-El had first returned, he had come with a wife. That had been a shocking thing to hear. But thankfully, destiny had set the timeline right this time.
But going back to the past— five years had passed since he was last there—telling Kara that she made the history books, giving her that hug, and telling her that he was never coming back to the past… it broke him.
He loved Kara. And he couldn't tell her those words. Because he had made a promise. A promise he was willing to keep.
"So good to be back home," Winn called as they made their way back to the watchtower. "I'll see you at Al's tonight? We saved the timeline, that earns us a drink or two."
Mon-El gave his best friend a small smile. "Sure. Say hi to Ayla for me. And give my love to Mary."
"Always!" Winn pulled Mon-El into a tight hug. "Take care, Buddy. And… go home, okay? She's waiting for you."
Yes, she was. His wife was waiting for him.
Mon-El took a seat in his chair and looked out of the glass panels that overlooked Earth. He had just said goodbye to the love of his life. It hurt more than he had expected it to. He knew this was going to happen. Going back to the past meant he simply had to say goodbye to Kara. He was never going back to the past because this was home. This was finally home.
Mon-El changed out of his Valor suit and put on a pair of dark blue jeans and a plaid shirt. He no longer needed glasses here, but he still loved dressing up as Mike Matthews, because that was a part of him. He was still Mike in some ways.
Saying goodbye to his fellow Legionnaires who were on duty, he made his way back home to Earth.
Star Wars had been right about some things. Even though Star Wars never took place on Earth, the whole flying cars and Holopads? They nailed that, alright.
National City reminded him of Argo now. The future had started to look a lot like Krypton. And his home was similar to the one the Els had at Argo. Who had thought this would be the future!
He flew home because it was liberating. There was no need to hide now.
As soon as he landed on the front porch and made his way inside, he was greeted by something small crashing into his legs.
Mon-El looked down to see his son hugging his legs tightly. "Hello there!" he called with a bright grin.
His son, Kai, looked up with an equally bright smile of his own. "General Kenobi!"
"I'm home, Kiddo!" Scooping Kai in his arms, Mon-El placed a soft kiss on his curly brown locks and asked, "Was I gone for long? Were you a good boy for Mama?"
"I was good, as always. You were gone these many days," Kai said, holding out his hand, showing Mon-El his five little fingers.
"Five days, huh? That was long." Mon-El pouted and hugged his son closer.
"Mon-El?" a voice called from the backyard. So, there she was!
Setting Kai down, Mon-El took his hand in his and made his way outside. She was looking at the flowers growing in their garden. Sometimes she obsessed over them. They hadn't bloomed when he had left for the past, but the arrays of colors caught his eyes now. They bloomed, and they bloomed so well.
She turned around with a bright smile. "Sweetheart, look! They are blooming!"
Mon-El let go of Kai's hand and made his way towards his wife. He wrapped his arms around her waist and gave her a heartbreaking smile. "They bloomed, just like you."
She gave him a shy smile and cupped his face. "I missed you so much!"
"I missed you, too," Mon-El said before he leaned down to place a soft kiss against her lips. When he pulled away, he placed a hand over her growing belly. "I missed all three of you."
"Well, Kai and I missed you for sure, but this little guy missed you just as much." Mon-El's wife placed her hand over his.
"My daughter, you mean?"
"We are having a boy, I know for sure." She bit her bottom lip and cupped his cheek again to give him a kiss. Just as she was about to deepen the kiss, Mon-El smiled against her lips and pulled away.
"We have company," he muttered against his wife's lips.
They turned around to see their son looking at them with a big smile. Mon-El chuckled and went to lift his son over his shoulder, eliciting a hearty giggle from him.
Later, when Kai had gone upstairs to finish his homework, Mon-El stood in the kitchen, pouring himself a glass of Zakarian Ale.
When his wife joined him in the kitchen, he said, "It's been my experience that most of life's problems go away when you bring Zakarian Ale to the table." He smiled remembering the same words he had spoken when he first got to Earth.
"Was it difficult? Saying goodbye?" she asked, taking a seat at the counter.
Mon-El gave her a small nod. "Yeah. It was… It hurt more than I thought it would."
"Well, you know what they say, goodbyes are difficult. Especially when you are saying goodbye to the one you love." There was sadness in her eyes as she said that. The same sadness he had seen a couple of hours ago in Kara's eyes when he said goodbye.
Setting the glass of Zakarian Ale aside, Mon-El made his way towards her. He kneeled down in front of her and cupped her cheek with one hand, while his other played with her blonde locks.
"I missed you, Kara," he whispered as he leaned closer and kissed her. "I went there and I said goodbye to you. I knew that you would be there for a couple of months before coming to the future, but that goodbye seemed final. And honestly, I was terrified! I kept asking myself if everything would be the same in the future. If you would be waiting for me with Kai."
Kara wrapped her arms around Mon-El's shoulders. "I'm here, I'm really here. I know it was stupid of me to decide to stay back. But for what? Kara Danvers? A disguise I wore since I landed on this planet? Those three months were the worst, Mon-El. They cemented my fear that I didn't belong there."
"Because you belong with me!"
Kara gave him a heartbreaking smile. "Have you and Winn been listening to Taylor Swift again?"
Mon-El chuckled and pulled her closer for a kiss. It was warm and soft, it felt like home.
When they pulled away, both smiling like lovestruck teenagers, Kara caressed his cheek and said, "I have everything that I wanted right here. You are here, Kai is here, this baby will be joining us very soon, and my parents visit us all the time. What more could I ask for?"
"There's no Kara Danvers here…"
"Yes, because this is Kara Mon-El's home, and that is how it will be forever."
Mon-El gave her a quick peck before wrapping his arms around her protruding tummy. "You know when I came back to the future after saying goodbye to you all those years ago? And you joined me three months later. It was like… it was the best time of my life, Kara."
Kara pulled away with a cheeky grin on her face. "You barely let me out of the bed, Mon! I'm pretty sure we conceived Kai during that time."
"Well, thank Goodness that we had Space Dad to officiate our wedding within that first month. I love being married to you."
"Me too. I always wanted to marry you!"
"You're happy," he said as a matter of fact.
Kara nodded. "Yeah, dopey grin, butterflies in my stomach happy…"
"We truly are a romcom on steroids, huh?" Mon-El chuckled as he stood up and pulled Kara along with him. "I'm happy you're happy." With that, he leaned down to give her a loud kiss.
When he pulled away, he looked at her baby bump and said, "We're having a girl."
Kara placed her hands on her hips and gave him that Supergirl pose. "Okay, I know that your x-ray vision has gotten a liiittle better—"
"A little better, is that right?" Mon-El grinned.
"And I'm always gonna be so much better than you with the whole powers thing—"
Mon-El folded his arms across his chest and raised a brow. "Really now?"
"Yeah! But that doesn't mean you can say what we are having correctly. The baby is still growing. It is a boy, I can feel it."
"Well, she is a tomboy, maybe that counts?"
Kara's eyes widened hearing that. "What? How could you possibly know that?"
Mon-El gave her a cheesy grin. "Our daughter is a time traveler, like me. But she's a bit more adventurous."
"Oh! And how many timelines has she screwed up?" Kara's hands fell to her stomach feeling the little kick her daughter gave her.
"None, so far." Chuckling, Mon-El pulled Kara closer and said, "Let's just say that she's a bit reckless like her mom. After all, you married me."
"Oh, trust me, honey, that was the least reckless thing I did. Staying away from you for so long was the most reckless I ever did."
"Not anymore though."
Kara shook her head. "Nope. And no regrets whatsoever."
Mon-El smiled brightly. "After all, who would have thought… a boy from Daxam and a girl from Krypton."
"Why because you come from a planet of partiers?" Kara once again wrapped her arms around his shoulders and caressed his hair.
"No, because you come from a planet of snobs."
Kara chuckled as she moved closer to peck his lips. "Yeah, snobs."
"I'm in your hands, Kara," Mon-El vowed.
"Now and forever, my love." Kara closed the distance between them and gave her husband a gentle kiss.
That's right, a boy from Daxam and a girl from Krypton, who would have thought!
