--------

Class 1-A was downstairs, all doing their things. Midoriya walked into the common room and was immediately greeted. “Hey, Deku-Kun!” Uraraka said, looking up from her phone. “Hi, Uraraka-San.” He quietly waved back.

A news broadcast popped up onto the screen, breaking news flashing at the bottom. “Breaking News! I’m your host Amelia Rae and I’m currently at the scene of a horrific hospital fire. Kurashiki South Hospital went up in flames at around 6:32 PM this evening, and so far only 20 survivors have been evacuated. We continue to pray that-”

Izuku stopped.

His mother worked there.

She had the 6 PM shift.

“This just in! Half of the building has collapsed. Heroes were able to find most survivors. Some are critically injured, and others are fine.”

--------

Midoriya paced the common room anxiously. They never gave the names of any survivors, but he never saw his mom leave the building. Maybe she got out before the news came on? Or what if she was still inside and they couldn’t find her? Oh god, he was going to lose his mind.

Izuku’s phone rang, shaking him out of his thoughts. Everyone had been silently praying for their resident sunshine. Izuku answered the phone.

“Hello?”

“....Yes this is he.”

“...what.”

“Okay. Goodbye.”

He finally let the tears fall.

Midoriya let out a heart-wrenching wail, falling to his knees. His classmates were on him immediately, pestering him about anything they could.

“Are you okay?”

“What happened?”

“Is your mom okay? Did she make it out?”

His cries rose in volume at the mention of his mother. He just wanted her back.

“Who was that?”

“Someone go get Mr. Aizawa!”

“On it.”

Izuku heard receding footsteps, but couldn’t bring himself to look up.

He refused to look up.

Midoriya felt a pair of strong arms wrap around his chest, carefully pulling him up.

“Midoriya.”

His wheezing sobs never stopped.

“Midoriya, look at me.”

He tentatively looked up at his teacher, staring through the hair stuck on his forehead.

“Take a deep breath. In, 2, 3, 4. Out, 2, 3, 4… There you go. What happened?”

Midoriya took one more deep breath, refusing to look his teacher in the eyes. “T-there was an f-fire at the h-hospital my m-mom works a-at. T-they just called a-and said t-they identified a b-body, and i-it was h-hers.”

He couldn’t breathe. His lungs burned with every gasping breath he took, tears falling once again.

Midoriya didn’t want pity.

He just couldn’t handle the weight of the world.
