Work Text:
their chest tightened as they gasped thrashed and bolted upright in bed trying to catch their ragged breath from the nightmare, the cold air biting at their bare shoulders as they shook from adrenalin, tears started to fill behind souls eyes as they clutched their knees to their chest trying to breath through the pain in their chest, there was a soft patter and a weight on the bed a soft purr breaking from the cat as she snuggled up to souls side comforting her owner. they smiled softly relaxing trailing a hand to their chest feeling the tough scar underneath the shirt.
"come on" they got of the bed, trudging to the bathroom for a shower, they pulling fresh clothing on and there rucksack walking out the door with valeria the cat heading to the collage.
they sky's were still pitch black once he got into the building, which squatted in the middle of the city, ivy slowly crawled up one side of the building, trees circled around the collage. souls sighed softly walking inside of the building, into the rabbit warren of corridors to his own room, the history room, smiling at the sweet musty oak smell of the books within the classroom, the windows slightly damp from the nights rain, and the desks lined parallel to each other and the teachers desk, where soul sat down taking out some of the unmarked books and started to mark them val sitting on their lap as they working quietly, only the purring of val surrounded the room.
they stretched softly clicking their back softly, they looked out the window seeing the first orange blades of the sunrise, few more hours and students will be appearing. they rolled their neck popping it softly and petted val again, floating a book over to and began to read to book death her self wrote by hand
"Sam?"
"meh?" he jumped slightly, they fell asleep? they defiantly fell asleep, they looked at the student and scowled "sorry, dint sleep and books needed to be marked"
the student chuckled softly "says the god of souls"
the student walked over to the desk sitting down as the others started to file in sitting down and chatting, souls stood as val jumped on the desk yawning, they stretched popping their back again
"so!" soul clapped their hands together "who's ready for what really happened in world war 2?"
the students chuckled raising their hands in unison
souls packed away the notes as students thanked them for the lesson leaving, soul nodded letting val jump on his shoulder as they walked out of the greeny fortress of the collage, slowly trudging home to the apartment listening to the gentle patters of the incoming rain, they got into the apartment opening and locking the door behind them, slowly curling a grey lock of hair behind their pale ear trailing a hand to one of the scars on their cheek, val bonked her head against souls cheek making the pale god smile, they kicked off their boots, pulling off the jacket walking into the kitchen putting the kettle on and adding a tea bag to the mug, they took out the phone smiling at the next and calling her
"hello dear" her voice echoed from the other side of the line
"hello death, how is it over there in the uk?"
there was a soft chuckle "quite alright, had a few witches come in asking for spell books, not realising they were talking to death herself"
"well Elizabeth lethe, hides the fact that you are a god"
another chuckle "says Samuel rue, how are your students by the way"
the kettle clicked ready and soul poured out the liquid into their cup "alive and what i seem to be well, really enjoyed the lesson today"
death chuckled, "they all enjoy your lessons darling, how is you?"
"im fine death"
"your lying my dear" her voice said sweetly
they sipped the tea standing quietly faintly hearing the screams and the cry's of their people, the coloured blood splattering gods falling and trying to flee from the pain and suffering of the new gods carnage of war, the pain going through their chest suddenly, there was a loud meow against their ear as they snapped out the memory
"souls?" her voice said laced with worry
"y-yeah, just.....not doing so good....some memories of w-what happened....."
there was silence on the other side of the line
"sorry darling, i didn't mean to...make you remember what happened"
"its okay, honestly i still have val, and she's got my flash's of what happened, trust me we need to go to a café or something to natter about that."
there was another pause, and a soft sigh
"okay my dear, you know where i am when you need me, okay?"
"yes death" they smiled faintly
"talk to you later souls"
the call ended
they sipped the tea again relaxing
val nudged souls face gently crackling
there was a beep on the phone and they looked at it dropping the mug on the counter
