Work Text:
It is Wednesday, and Kagami is eating a small mountain of burgers. It’s how he celebrates Wednesdays - by eating at least 5 burgers before walking home in an overstuffed stupor. He always gets through the first half pretty quick, less than 12 minuets definitely, but he slows down for the second half. His mother’s voice admonishing him to chew his food ringing in his head.
Is this what people call meditation? It’s a peaceful time, and Kagami enjoys feeling his stomach expand and letting his mind wander. He’s having a few vague flashbacks, like to that time Kuroko promised to be his shadow and make him shine brighter. What had he said, again? Something like, ‘You’re going to be my light, and I’m going to be your shadow, and you’re going to make me darker, and I’m going to make you brighter, and together, we’ll beat everyone at basketball!!’
Yeah, something like that. He likes the idea of shining like a beacon on the basketball court; of being so good with the ball that everyone can’t help but look at him and his skill.
He hates to admit it, but what Kuroko said was one of the nicest things he’s ever heard. Heck, he’d take what Kuroko said to him over a love confession, any day. He’s still waiting for the whole ‘make you brighter’ thing to happen, but..
Kagami jumps, suddenly, nearly choking on his food when he realizes that Kuroko is right there. The blue haired boy is nonchalantly sitting in front of him, and when did he get there? When did he sit down? Has he been there this whole time?? Kagami is concerned, and scowls to hide his confusion.
“Oyy! When did you get here Kuroko?!”
The other boy blinks placidly (he’s placid about everything though), and Kagami settles down quickly. Burgers are more important than trying to understand his teammate's mysterious disappearing act.
They’re in a bench seat today, and Kagami naturally starts talking about practice and who to keep an eye on from different schools. Kuroko is nodding along like he actually cares (maybe he does?), while occasionally stealing a fry off his plate.
Kagami allows it. He never finishes all his fries, anyway.
So there they are, on a perfectly normal Stuff-Yourself-With-Burgers Wednesday, minding their own business, when freaking Aomine Daiki shows up and sits next to Kuroko. Like it’s no big deal. Like he does it every day.
And Kagami is so shocked he forgets to eat, ok.
Aomine is basically the antihero in Kagami’s basketball world. He’s the one, The One, that Kagami is going to beat. The One that Kagami is going to take down a peg or four. The One, who’s name Kagami will erase from the minds of thousands of basketball fans!
And Kagami is shocked, right, but then -
Aomine greets Kuroko with a quick kiss on the mouth, and Kagami forgets to breathe.
Aomine goes to order his own food, and Kagami inhales again so sharply he chokes a bit on whatever half-masticated something was still hanging out in his mouth.
And it occurs to Kagami, mouth agape, that he has never seen Kuroko and Aomine together before.
Kagami barely registers Kuroko trying to get his attention, or Aomine returning and greeting him.
He’s sputtering, trying not to choke, as the two other boys both stare at him with little concern.
Kuroko and his freaking BOYFRIEND are way too casual about this situation, Kagami decides.
“You’re dating AOMINE?!” he inhales too sharply and coughs on crumbs, this time.
Kuroko shrugs, playing at his usual nondescript self. “Um. Yeah?”
Then he’s pointing an accusing finger at the other basketball player. “And you’re gay?!”
In Kagami’s mind, gay means girly, pretty, sissy, useless, weak. Aomine is not any of those things.
Aomine smirks around his burger, so condescending Kagami instantly wants to punch him. “Sometimes.”
Kagami shakes his head and eats mechanically, trying to process the information.
It turns out, Kuroko comes to this particular burger joint nearly every Wednesday (and Kagami does, too, so how hasn’t he seen him before?). And nearly every Wednesday, Aomine will join Kuroko and they’ll have a little date before parting ways. This particular burger joint was open late, and nearly halfway between the other two boys’ houses.
They rarely saw each other during the week, busy with school and club activities.
The rest of the dinner passes in something approaching normal. Aomine and Kagami can’t help egging each other on, and Kuroko just sighs and smiles inanely, side pressed firmly against the dark skinned players’.
When they leave, Kagami is witness to a longer kiss, before everyone waves and says goodbye.
Kagami isn’t gay, of course, but he feels kinda jealous.
Kuroko is his shadow. Or, is going to be his shadow.
He walks home in contemplative silence.
Maybe if he hangs around Kuroko on purpose, he’d get a chance to play one on one with Aomine?
That’d be something.
