Work Text:

Today had certainly been a busy day to say the least for the king consort as he made his way back to the small cottage he and his family often stayed at. Mamoru had unfortunately spent most of his day being run here and there for all sorts of errands.

Between needing to fix the front door on the cottage, going back to the castle to get a toy that Celestine said she forgot, and running into town to find some very specific apples that Jougo wanted for some reason, he was feeling exhausted and was more than ready to just rest for the night cuddled on the couch with his husband.

Still, even though he had done every errand his family had asked of him today, something was nagging at the back of his mind, like he had been forgetting something rather important. But for the life of him he couldn’t possibly figure out what it could be. He had done everything he was asked to today, right?

As Mamoru reached for the door he could hear rustling along with hushed giggles and murmurs from inside, and he couldn’t help but smile to himself, thinking about how Jougo and Celestine were most likely running around playing some game the little girl had come up with.

With a light chuckle he pushed the door open, ready to greet his husband and daughter and inevitably be pulled into whatever game they had started, but stopped when he saw the scene inside.

Sitting on the kitchen table was a small cake, roughly covered with a messy layer of frosting and with a single candle burning in the middle of it.

“Happy birthday!!”

Jougo and Celestine’s voices cheered from the small cottage, the two of them standing behind the table with the brightest grins on their faces.

Oh. That’s right. Today was his birthday. It had somehow managed to completely slip his mind.

Jougo giggled as he walked over with a cheeky grin, giving his husband a quick kiss, “Happy birthday, Mamo! I bet you completely forgot, didn’t you?”

“Yeah, I did.” Mamoru replied with a soft laugh and happy tears forming in his eyes, “Is this why you two were keeping me out of the house all day?”

Celestine rushed over excitedly, holding up a colorful flower crown that she had no doubt made herself, and Mamoru knelt down to let her put it on his head before lifting his daughter into his arms.

“Happy birthday, Dad!” Celestine exclaimed with a proud grin, “I made the cake just like you showed me! I followed the recipe and everything, and I made extra sure Daddy didn’t touch it at all except to put it in and out of the oven!”

“Hey!” Jougo tried to shoot back with a pout, apparently offended by his daughter’s comment.

Mamoru simply laughed though, “I’m sure it’s delicious, Celestine. Thank you both so much.”

Quickly, Celestine gasped, pointing over at the table, “Quick, Dad! You gotta make your wish!”

“Yeah! It’s your special birthday wish, Mamo! You only get one!” Jougo pulled his husband over to the kitchen table, his bright smile back again.

Mamoru set Celestine back down as he was dragged over to the table and looked down at the simple cake. It really wasn’t anything impressive, just a simple round cake with some messily applied vanilla frosting that was speckled with a mess of cake crumbs, but it was still the greatest cake he’d ever seen.

Taking a look at his loving family, Celestine grinning and bouncing at the edge of the table and Jougo beaming and chuckling quietly, Mamoru took a breath and blew out the small candle.

But he didn’t bother making a wish, he didn’t need to.

Everything about his life was already perfect.

Notes:

I definitely did not forget that today was Mamoru's birthday and ended up writing this entirely last night. Nope. Not me. Anywaaaaay this was a cute idea I had for a comic since last year and I just decided to write it instead. I'm better at writing anyway. XD

Happy birthday to Mamoru! He deserves nothing but good things and happy times with his family. :3
