Chapter 1: A Minute (Sasha)

Chapter Text

It didn’t feel like very long. Maybe only a minute, but that’s all it took. Just a minute.

One second she had been fighting Andrias. Wielding both her swords, knuckles white from how hard she was gripping them. She didn’t expect to make it back home, all that mattered was Anne.

Marcy… she wasn’t sure how to feel about her yet. But, she supposed, since both were focusing on getting Anne out, they could work together for now.
And at the moment, that meant holding back the giant newt.

So here she was. Trying not to fall over from shaky legs, trying not to show just how heavily she was panting from exhaustion, trying not to think about how willing she was to die.

God.

She was what, 13?

Could be 14, but she lost track of days ages ago.

She shouldn’t be thinking about these things. She should be partying, goofing off, eating ice cream, watching tv. And here she was fighting a war.

Because of Marcy.

Sasha would like to think Andrias was a good fighter, but she knew, she knows, that he only beat her because she let her guard down.

The damn traitor part of her, the part that was just so tired, had made her body sluggish.

In two of the longest fucking seconds, she went sailing through the air and slammed into the wall. It didn’t feel like she blacked out, but she knows she did.
The king had already crossed the room by the time the black and spots in her vision were fading away, by the time the bile in her throat was being forced back down.

Sasha could only watch as Andrias leveled his sword at Marcy. She wanted to shout, but the blood pooling in her mouth had stopped her.

Or maybe it was her anger, wanting Marcy to pay. But it couldn’t be that, right? She wasn’t that cruel.

Right?

The king struck quickly, his flaming sword piercing through Marcy’s chest. And just like that, Sasha lost all the air in her lungs.

She didn’t scream. She could only watch, letting out small strangled gasps.

Why didn’t she warn her?? Why didn’t she shout to go?? Was she just as much to blame as him?? Sure Andrias did the action, but she just watched.

Marcy fell over, her body a motionless heap, as the music box clattered to the ground. One white flash later and Anne was gone.

Sasha was officially alone.

And all she could do was scream.

It had only been a minute.
