Work Text:
Akaashi had never had particular feelings towards his birthdays, he mostly always felt pretty indifferent to them.
His parents always made sure they went out to eat or something on his birthday but he never really told any of his friends when it was, something Akaashi hated was being the centre of attention and that was basically what a birthday invited and he didn't want that. So, nobody ever knew until his second year of high school where one Bokuto Koutarou had somehow found out and threw him a surprise party after practice.
Akaashi claimed it was the moment he had fallen in love with Bokuto.
And now, here they were, almost ten years later and Akaashi was just as in love with Bokuto as he had been back then, maybe even more so. He was sure that he fell more in love with the man every single day of their lives and for that, he was grateful.
Where his parents made sure he always knew he was cared for on his birthday, Bokuto made sure he knew how loved he was.
The smell of cookies baking was what hit Akaashi first when he walked into their apartment. He'd meant to book the day off but alas, he always forgot and so did Tenma. Bokuto was whistling softly to himself as he transferred cookies from the tray onto a plate and Akaashi to put it lightly, was surprised. Surprised that Bokuto was home so soon when he normally didn't come back until around seven from practice and more surprised that he was baking. In the ten years they had been together, Akaashi had never seen Bokuto baking, he always said when he arrived with some kind of baked goods on his birthday that his mum had done it but had it been Bokuto all along?
He was sure in that second, Akaashi fell in love all over again.
"Kou?" He watched the other jump slightly when he heard his voice but soon looked over with a look of pure joy.
"Keiji!" He cheered, coming over to wrap Akaashi in a hug. "I'm so happy you're home. Happy birthday love, I'm sorry I didn't say it first thing but you looked so peaceful when you were sleeping and by the time I come back from morning practice you're at work!"
"I know Kou, it's okay," he replied, leaning up to press a kiss to Bokuto's lips. "I love you so much, thank you."
"I love you too, Keiji, here, I made some cookies!" Bokuto shouted excitedly, shoving the plate at Akaashi, obviously wanting to show off his hard work. "Foster let me come home early from practice because everyone knows it's your birthday, I have some cards from the team over on the table and everyone told me to tell you happy birthday!" Bokuto rambled, leading Akaashi over to the sofa.
To say Akaashi was surprised yet warmed was an understatement. He had always gotten along with Bokuto's teammates of course especially Hinata, he'd known him for such a long time now and Atsumu and Kiyoomi had been around since his third year of Nationals but he didn't know all of them cared enough to remember his birthday or get him a card for it, he made a mental note to text the group chat from Bokuto's phone later on.
The two of them eventually lapsed into a comfortable silence as Akaashi munched on the cookies Bokuto had baked, leaning over to rest his head on his husband's shoulder, sighing softly when Bokuto started running his fingers through Akaashi's hair.
"I love you so much Keiji, everyday with you is so special that it's hard to make your birthday even more special because being with you makes me feel so privileged I wish I could do more to make today the best day of the year." Akaashi felt his eyes fill with tears he tried desperately to bite back, here Bokuto was worried that he wasn't making his birthday special? of course he was. Just by being with him it was special, everyday with Bokuto was a good day.
"Kou, you made everyday incredible. You don't need to do anything to make my birthday special because you do that just by showing me how loved I am love, please, don't beat yourself up. I love you more than life."
Bokuto made a content noise, nodding gently before resting his cheek against Akaashi's hair softly.
"What do you want to do tonight?"
"I want to lie in our bed and watch a movie."
"Is that all?"
"Yes. I just want to be with you Kou, that's all I need. We can facetime Kuroo and Kenma too because Kenma has been asking me too, okay?" Bokuto nodded, hiding a yawn behind his hand as he grabbed his phone from his pocket and dialled Kuroo's number.
It was nearing eleven when the two of them finally got their best friends off of the phone, had dinner and got ready for bed.
Akaashi had his head laid against Bokuto's chest, curling around his husband as much as he could, falling asleep to the low sounds of a movie he didn't care about and Bokuto running his fingers through his hair which he did care about.
It may be simple but Akaashi thought it was the best birthday he'd had.
