"Stay with me, please"

Work Text:

What had started as a lovely walk around the forest had turned into a horrible moment in which you and Darcy argued. Neither of you remember how it all had started, you could only feel that rage and sadness that harbored in your hearts.

As loud as the thunder roaring over your heads were, the sound of his loud voice angrily shouting at you semeed to echo much louder. And so was yours, bringing back those terrible words you didn’t mean.

Now, standing there drenched from head to toe, there was only silence. You faced your back to Darcy, who also refused to look your direction.

The sound of the storm around you, and even the rain which was usually soothing, was now extremely anguishing. It felt like the water would fill your heart and drown you along with your emotions.

“Do you really not wish that?” Darcy’s sudden voice startled you despite his soft tone. “Is the thought of marrying me truly that terrible?”

You made a pause, thinking of what to say next. In an attempt to avoid repeating the same mistakes you just did, you preferred to choose your words carefully. The moment was delicate, and the tension felt like electricity in the air.

“No” You finally whispered back, glancing over your shoulder. “That is not the matter”

“Forgive me” He sighed, daring to take a step closer to you. Despite it all, you didn’t turn to him quite yet. “I didn’t mean to get angry… your no broke my heart”

“You misunderstood me” You replied, lightly moving to be facing him a bit more. “It isn’t that I don’t wish to marry you… it’s only that I don’t wish to marry”

Darcy grew quiet, intently watching you. Risking to move closer, he took the few last steps that broke the distance between you. Flustered by the closeness, you averted your gaze.

“May I ask why?” He urged you, brushing his hand against yours.

“Because… and as much as my parents wish me to marry…” You took a deep breath, now daring to tug at his fingers with yours. “I’m afraid I’m not ready for that quite yet”

“I understand” Darcy nodded his head, still lovingly staring at you in such a way.

“I’m sorry…” You finally locked eyes with him, showing him that same fondness that his eyes showcased.

“Don’t be” He managed a small empathetic smile. “But please, do tell me if you ever change your mind”

“I will, I promise” You sighed, relieved that the tension was gone. “I only need time”

“And so I will wait”

“Stay with me, please?” Your question, accompanied by your vulnerable look, was more than enough for him to agree.

In a gesture that you would have never expected, and that Darcy would certain not have indulged in were you not alone, he urgently engulfed you in an embrace.

You further relaxed under his comforting touch, shielding yourself against his chest and nuzzling his shoulder. His arms felt warm despite the rain, and his affection turned the storm soothing again.
