I never got to say this but...
The sounds of the order members' shock was muffled. The only thing you could hear were the echoes of, "Regulus Black, dead."
Regulus Black.
Dead.
Dead.
Dead.
You-know-who had killed him.
Your heart thumped in your chest. Cold. You felt cold. This... it couldn't be true. You wouldn't believe it. You hadn't seen the body. Where was the body? It couldn't be true. You... you hadn't gotten to tell him.
"Y/N," your brother's voice was muffled too. It barely made it through the hazy shield of your shocked fear. It couldn't be true. He had promised. You ripped yourself from your brother's arms, pushing through the crowd.
Regulus Black, dead. Poor boy. Too young to die. He's not the first, and certainly won't be the last.
The curtain of people made way for you, though perhaps you made them make way for you. Your desperation was too suffocating for you to be able to know.
You reached the end, and-
"No..." the word was little more than a pained rasp as you fell to your knees beside the man you had loved.
I never got to say this but... I loved you.
You hadn't had the chance to tell him. He'd been the one to utter the words, running from the Death Eaters, flashing by your home in Godric's Hollow, near your brother's house. He'd disapparated before you'd had a chance to reply. To say, I love you too.
He'd left you with a single promise, that he would return.
"Reggie, please," you sobbed his name. "Please! Wake up!" It was a plead. You were begging him. He couldn't be gone.
It felt as though your heart was being ripped into two, shredded endlessly. Sobs racked your chest as you clung to his lifeless body. He had the ghost of a grimace etched onto his features. It hurt. It hurt so damn much that you wished it could end.
You hadn't been able to tell him back. You'd had your chance, and you hadn't been able to tell him.
"Wake up..." your voice was little more than a whisper as you let your head rest on his lifeless chest, wishing there would be that heartbeat that had soothed you to sleep. Wishing his melodiously mournful, epic-worthy voice would say that he was there. That he was with you.
And as you waited; and waited; and waited, there was no sound. Nothing happened. He was... gone. Had passed into that next world. Without you.
I never got to say this but... You were too good for this world, my love.
